New app Beta test

Just thought I’d start a thread for those of us testing the Beta version of the new MN app, to share initial impressions (as well as sharing feedback with MNHQ).

So far I love it! I love how light it is and that we don’t only have 4/5 dark backgrounds to choose from! I also like that we finally get to see the trending list. Will report back with further thoughts 🤓

Yeah it definitely feels more ‘modern’. I like that we can now vote!

Oh this is exciting. I’ve received the email but only have limited download on the WiFi I’m using atm so will do it when I get home later.

Yes I love that we can vote & edit now from within the app, that’s great. Finally! Also the preview is a stroke of genius as I’ve often posted too soon

Replying to this to share my first feedback. I’d like to be able to ‘thank’ with it having to first hit the 3 dots. On the site it’s just an option under each comment.

Ooh but I do like the option to preview the message and make changes before pressing send (which I did to add this paragraph)

I like the nested quotes (and that they default to collapsed) so you can view a conversation from the start and not just the last post

also like that you now see a full image and not just a small section you have to click on to view

Ooooh I'm not beta testing but... is this an android or iPhone app? Or both (please say android!)

The survey for beta testing (other post in Site stuff) asked if you use iOS or android so it might be both. I use iOS

I’m testing it too. The font is massive though and I’m not sure how to change that. I like being able to swipe on the old app to bookmark and quote. But being able to vote is great!!

Just had another thought: it would be nice to be able to ‘see next’ by an OP like the website version. It’s doable without, just a thought

Oh also, is there yet a way to view notifications in the app? Have I missed it? That’s a really important feature for me

Loving it so far! Something I have noticed is that on the current app if you tap Active it takes you back to the top. The new one doesn’t seem to do this so you have to scroll back up to refresh.

We're really glad to hear that you're (mostly!) pretty chuffed with the new app.

Just wondered if anyone here uses the desktop or mobile site as well as the app? We've had reports from a number of desktop/mobile users who've experienced problems with the site crashing.

@VegTrug thank you for starting this thread 🙌We're excited to be sharing this early version of the new app with you all and we're really grateful for all the feedback. Please keep sharing it here if you're happy to do so!

If you experience any crashes you should see a pop-up asking if you would like to let us know. Please do this if you can! It's extra useful if you include a description of where you were in the app when the crash happened and if there was a specific action that seemed to trigger it.

@VerityUnreasonble we've just released the beta on iOS at the moment whilst we iron out a few issues on Android, but it will be available shortly. You can still join the beta group by filling in this short survey. We'll be in touch via email when it's ready to test.

@hopeishere do you have your text size increased in your device's settings? If not, would you be able to share a screenshot so we can have a look? Thank you!

Another thing I’ve just noticed, re replying to a post.

Currently in the app, replying keeps your place in the thread. However in this version, replying takes me to the end of the thread, and I can’t use a ‘back’ button like on the mobile site to take me back to where I was.

I’m also unable to highlight and select text from a message to copy and paste to reply to (where quoting the whole OP isn’t necessary). I can in the app.

Ummm I don't like it but I can't see where you can change the backgrounds? Where's that setting. I'm using the iOS app.

The two main is yes I have is lack of differentiation between the headings and the text body. Loads of websites are doing this and it makes it very difficult for people with certain visual processing difficulties or conditions such as ADHD to pick out the text. Plus the fonts are WAY too small. I'm currently finding it really incredibly diffcult to read it at all (I'm having to strain) so I haven't gone into the other settings and functions yet as I can't deal with that today and just went straight back to the old app after giving some feedback!

It's also way too bright for me but that might be resolvable with different backgrounds if someone can point me in the right direction. I can't see it anywhere in settings?

No you can’t change the colours just yet. It appears that option isn’t active in the Beta version but may be in the final version? I was just saying that I prefer a white background rather than only having the 4/5 dark options

I, too, like the more modern feel, the ability to easily follow topics, voting etc.

Added two pics one to show the size which might be my phone. And one to show the ‘add your post’ is hard to access as it’s partially covered. Also I seem to have lost the ability to edit posts on the app.
