claricebeansmum · 23/04/2008 19:38

Slow tonight - is it a particularly busy?

ahundredtimes · 23/04/2008 19:39

I think we are safe in here.

We are safe and quick. It's the long threads isn't it? Like it's struggling under the weight of all the moaning and laughing.

southeastastra · 23/04/2008 19:40

i had to switch to firefox ages ago. it stops all the time on ie

ahundredtimes · 23/04/2008 19:41

I don't even know what firefox is, or ie. [slow as MN emoticon]

lackaDAISYcal · 23/04/2008 19:41

mine is very s-l-o-w and has been for a week or so. It seems to be at it's worst between school chucking out and about now....I put it down to being super busy with traffic, but by this time everyone has left it alone to go and do bedtime

southeastastra · 23/04/2008 19:46

firefox is another browser, like internet explorer. (ie ).

But have to put on ad blocker too on firefox

youknownothingofthecrunch · 23/04/2008 19:49

Very slow. Has been for a couple of days.

Gremlins, that's my diagnosis (and I'm very technically minded)

Blandmum · 23/04/2008 19:51

It can be very slow on times

QueenTaLcY · 23/04/2008 19:53

Slow here too...and i keep getting logged off

zippitippitoes · 23/04/2008 19:55

so where is the firefox adblocker

southeastastra · 23/04/2008 20:01

i used something called no script.

Mercy · 23/04/2008 20:42

gawd it's happening again.

Aparrently we 'have' mozilla firefox (whatever that is)

I might go back to rl for a day or 2 again (it was pretty good actually)

There is a known problem which occurs occasionally with the ads. You'll know it is the ads if you load a thread and either:

(i) you see nothing for a period of time, say 30 seconds, and then suddenly the rest of the page appears, or
(ii) the top section of page loads, then pauses for a period of time then the rest of the page suddenly appears.

There are no other problems of which we are aware, but please do let us know if you see any. Remember that unless our monitoring system sees a problem then the most likely (not the only, but the most likely) explanation is a problem with your own Internet connection - even if you subsequently visit another site and it's all okay, because such problems are usually very short lived.

There were a couple of times this afternoon (Wednesday) when you would have been logged off and had to log back in, because we had to release some emergency fixes to the system. When we do this your session ends and you have to log back in.

Lastly, note that if you elect to use a script blocker of any kind then various parts of the site will not work properly.

southeastastra · 23/04/2008 21:02

wish it would be sorted out ymtech, i don't mind the ads, but the site has been really slow to load for about 2 months now.

YetMoreTech · 23/04/2008 21:31

southeastastra, can you give me a bit more info?

When I view a thread, such as this one, it takes between 2 and 2.5 seconds to load and display the entire page. That includes loading the ads. Clearly what feels fast and what feels slow is pretty subjective, but around 2 seconds to load a page feels "fast enough" to me personally. It actually feels somewhat faster, because the top of the page loads first and one can't see the bottom part of the page downloading.

The site consistently performs around this level. Sometimes it's a bit busier and sometimes quieter, so it varies a little.

Now, is yours much slower? If so, can you please tell me what kind of computer you're using, which operating system, which browser, what kind of Internet connection you have and who your ISP is. Also, are other people sharing your internet connection?

Beauregard · 23/04/2008 21:33

I thought it was just me having problems, slow to load and then timing out,i am running on Firefox.

ShowOfHands · 23/04/2008 21:38

I'm on ie, been very slow to load, upwards of 30 seconds and timing out. New-ish laptop, all other sites fine.

southeastastra · 24/04/2008 08:17

i have IE7, Windows XP, broadband connection with virgin media. Have another pc on wireless.

It loads fine on Firefox, but on IE it can sometimes take a few minutes to load the pages. it goes all white while it's loading.

YetMoreTech · 24/04/2008 10:10

"It loads fine on Firefox, but on IE it can sometimes take a few minutes to load the pages. it goes all white while it's loading."

A few minutes is a long long time and definitely bad news. I thought perhaps you meant 10 seconds or something. It's certainly not the Mumsnet server that's taking that long to generate a page. It's almost certainly ad related, unfortunately. I do realise that as a user you don't care - you just want it to work! If you notice a specific ad that causes the problem do let us know and we can ask for it to be removed.

Meanwhile, your statement does rather beg the question... why use IE, for Mumsnet at least?

southeastastra · 24/04/2008 12:16

mn does look better on IE, but i use Firefox when it's having a turn so to speak.

PhDiva · 24/04/2008 19:02

I am very suspicious about what is suddenly slowing down MY Mumsnet. I noticed in the lower left hand corner of the screen, the address: www.google-analytics.com whenever my MN stalls. WTF? It is a site where companies with websites can monitor information about the users on their site.

Is there something we should know?
