Board for high earners

I see that the other thread was started by an OP who wasn’t engaging in good faith. I certainly am so, Mumsnet, can we please have a separate board for high earners? It would be helpful for these threads to be in one place and to avoid them being high jacked by the inevitable “small violin” and “diamond shoes” comments.

Phil would make an excellent name for a Guinea Pig

DD plans to get a Guinea pig, I shall insist she call it Phil

Equally people post questions about struggling financially and get told "why did you have children"/ "just move 300 miles and find another job" etc etc.

I think mumsnet should crack down on those posts too, they're horrible.

That's just inevitable with a big melting pot of different voices.

Like I say, I have posted questions related to schooling, savings and investments and not had any silly comments. I think it depends how people phrase things.

Of course if you have a total lack of awareness about your own privilege people are going to jump on that.

I saw my friends post. It was very polite. She has anxiety and is always conscious of being polite and how she comes across and she'd just been through a trauma. People were cunts!

Reddit is far better if you have questions about finances, investing, FIRE, for high earners etc. It is male dominated but far friendlier.

Agree. The HENRY and the FIRE boards are actually really useful for higher earners, and they do to some extent help with female-specific issues, although I reckon they're 95% men.

As shown here you really will get no sense on Mumsnet without a separate board! And I think it's fairly safe to say that we won't get a separate board, so just adapt accordingly.

But this is pretty much the whole point. There is nowhere with a female focus.

At the time I wanted advice on the timing of pension contributions, risk of moving job relating to glass ceiling/glass cliff issues, implications of flexible working in that type of job etc. All with a female focus.

I think a lot of it also depends on which board you are posting on. If people are posing "Is it possible to contribute £5k a month towards my pension" in 'Money Matters' alongside someone who's worried they are going to lose their home, or someone who has just been denied PIP, yes some people might think it's a bit distasteful.

Oooh yes please, I am glad this is restarted.
I think the best thing to do is have it a subscription only board. Set a decently high price. That should weed out the riff raff

VAT free though

Spreadable.
Right to the very corners of the bread.

How do you hold it without getting butter on your fingers?

Iloveburgerswaymorethanishould · 08/10/2024 21:06

Can we also have one for gingers? Not necessarily rich ones, just ginger???

BringTheWine · 08/10/2024 21:07

Maybe mumsnet just need a non judgemental board about money matters. Any judgemental, snarky, shit stirring posters and their supply of tiny violins or comments like 'why have 4 children on a low wage' should be automatically banned!

DrSpartacular · 08/10/2024 21:07

As the prior keeper of a guinea pig called Philip (RIP) it is clear we need a board for keepers of GPs called Phil/ip.

Definitely. I would prefer to have somewhere that is female focused. The sub reddits have helped me massively but are somewhat lacking on information that I need now I'm on maternity leave and considering a career break. Maybe it could work on here if the threads didn't show up on trending?

I prefer the term peasants

I believe that the correct term is "scrounger"? Avoiding tax on high earnings is efficient planning, claiming £25 so that you can eat is scrounging.

Or protecting your savings for private school. Just stick it in a trust fund. 👍

User37482 · 08/10/2024 21:08

I actually don’t see the harm, they have a specific experience and are allowed to ask questions. At least people can hide the threads if they get very upset about people earning 100k+. Why not. I thought childfree mumsnetters was a really good idea and the black, south asian and muslim boards. People sometimes need advice from someone who understand their specific circumstances.

I don’t understand how mnet becomes a choice for an intelligent career woman on this tbf.

I’d seek proper advice if I needed to address a pensions issue, everyone’s situation is unique.

I’d reach out to something like CMI Women or another one of my professional networks on career focus.

I certainly would not come here where people are anonymous and could write a complete load of fiction if they chose to.

What if I'm not ginger, but Phil is?

Runnerinthenight · 08/10/2024 21:11

DangerMouseAndPenfoldx · 08/10/2024 20:17

I’ll expand on what I said on the last thread.

I think it’s a great idea in theory, but it will get trashed, as you can see from the comments already.

It would be great to have a place for WOMEN high-earners to advise each other on the specific issues that go along with that.

Unfortunately those discussions can’t be had on MN. Financial discussion for high earners can very sensibly be had on MSE, but not women-specific.

So we miss out. This is why we can’t have nice things!

I think as a high earner you probably have plenty of "nice things"!

I really don't understand why anyone on a large income would want to ask randomers on an anonymous site questions about their personal income! Get a professional!!!

I don't believe the poster concerned anyway.

What about a board for those who only buy organic produce from Waitrose stores within 10 miles of Kensington?

Or those who live north of Birtley?

Nonsense.
No-one lives north of Birtley

Hoppinggreen · 08/10/2024 21:11

A board for ginger guinea pigs called Phil!!!!

Mumsnet provide a sex board that is basically dominated by pervy men to overshare their made up sexual fantasies....it's therefore quite annoying if they won't provide a place for posters, mainly women, who are their core members, to talk about financial matters and protect them from the goady arseholes, whether you're a low or higher earner.

Well unless they are going to check income levels the threads could just be full of glorious fantasists anyway.

Tbf, women use mumsnet for a lot of things I wouldn't. Health questions for example. Mumsnet provide a health board and women often use it as a place before seeing a GP. It can be a useful sounding board.

I agree, I was just suggesting that we won't get one, so look elsewhere.

(Of course from a commercial advertising perspective Mumsnet should be doing all it can to maximise engagement with high earners, and to stop us from taking our discussions elsewhere, so maybe my cynicism is misplaced.)

MargaretBetts · 08/10/2024 21:16

Perhaps we could add ‘North of Watford and earning £66.66k plus ….. this is your place 🏡’.

Obviously for those of us who might be career women in the grim north.
