I found it super irritating for ages, and got really confused by it. Getting pinged when anyone posts on a thread you post really only scares away newbies I think.

@DelightedlLime As others have said, we have this switched on as a default as lots of people do find them useful and otherwise most people probably wouldn't know notifications were available.

But they are really easy to customise. If you go here you can change the notifications to work more or less however you want. Hope that helps.
