Automatically 'Watch' threads I post on should really be set to 'NO' by default.

I found it super irritating for ages, and got really confused by it. Getting pinged when anyone posts on a thread you post really only scares away newbies I think.

By pinged do you mean you get a notification? I access the site via FB and only get notifications when I open the page. So I would find it annoying if I had to remember to click watch on every post I interact with! Can you not turn notifications off?

Isnt FB facebook? How can you use it to access Mumsnet???

Yes, there is an option to not auto watch posts, but it is a bit hard to find.

Yes, Facebook. Just go onto the Mumsnet page and click on sign up.

Tereseta · 03/06/2024 07:49

Disagree, this feature is great as ìt helps.me to find threads. I don't get any notifications though? Only when I open the mumsnet page.

Yes, Facebook. Just go onto the Mumsnet page and click on sign up.

So you log in using your facebook account, not access MN through facebook Grin

I get a big red dot with a 1 in the corner of my profile dropdown.

No, I log into the MN profile I had when I used to use the MN app.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 03/06/2024 07:54

I think this is a you problem OP. New users are much more likely to use any service if they are reminded of activity. Some services take it too far but its really minimal on mn.

So can you explain how you access MN using facebook? Sorry i'm a bit confused.

Go into your profile and into notifications and settings, to change this. I’ve set it like this so it only notifies me if the OP posts again on the thread, or if I’m quoted or mentioned. If I want to see what’s happening on threads I’ve posted on, I go to the “I’m on” pin on the bottom line of the page. I don’t get notifications for this bit but I can see the activity.

Thats how I have it set up, and how it should be by default in my opinion.

Go onto the Munsnet Facebook page. Click the blue button.
This opens the Mumsnet app. Click on the person icon at top right and log in. Once you have logged in the first time it will keep you logged in when you open Mumsnet.

Yeah that is following a link, not anything else.

Hard disagree OP, it's great having every thread I've posted on on "watching" without having to do anything.

If it's notifications you don't like, you can turn them off and adjust them to your heart's content in your own settings. You only need to do that once whereas on your suggestion I'd need to actively watch every single thread I've posted on.

I really don’t understand what your issue is? I explained how I access Mumsnet without getting annoying notifications and you just keep telling me I’m only following a link? Why does that matter?

Ok, but IMO notifications should only be for updates and being quoted, not every single post on that thread.

I think you are getting a bit confused!

That's not accessing mumsnet through facebook - that's accessing mumsnet the same ordinary way! It has no effect on anything - your settings may though.

It makes a lot more sense (certainly from the website’s perspective) to notify people for more things and for them to ramp it down. Otherwise you might not realise that it’s an option - and it keeps people engaged. If you only post occasionally, it’s hardly overwhelming. And if you post a lot hopefully it isn’t too much effort to spend 30 seconds of that mumsnet time customising it to how you like it. I was happy with all default notifications for several years before I started posting a bit more sometimes. And even then I’d just pop in there and mark all as read if I wanted to dispel the red dot.

Yes and you can make this be the case? I don't get any notifications (red dots or pings or whatever) whatsoever, apart from the odd email. That's how I want it.

MajorMischa · 03/06/2024 08:56

Just change your preferences OP! You can make it so you aren't notified of anything if you want, or just for quotes etc.

I love the automatic add to watch list.

Morning, everyone. Thanks for all the answers to this question.

@DelightedlLime As others have said, we have this switched on as a default as lots of people do find them useful and otherwise most people probably wouldn't know notifications were available.

But they are really easy to customise. If you go here you can change the notifications to work more or less however you want. Hope that helps.

Many thanks to OP and MNHQ with the link - adjusted my settings - very helpful thread!!

DappledThings · 03/06/2024 10:09

I have it set to get no notifications at all. I liked anywhere I post to become automatically a thread I'm watching so I can choose to find it to see any updates in the Watching tab.

Your issue with needing to customise your notifications, not with the thread becoming automatically watched.
