Disability hate on MN

IClaudine · 02/05/2024 13:31

Hi MNHQ

Since Sunak’s announcement on disability benefits, there has been a big increase on MN in hostility towards people who receive then.

The abuse, hate and outright lies (my neighbour’s son’s cousin’s wife climbs Mount Everest but gets PIP etc) being spewed on MN towards disabled people, a group with protected characteristics, has been dreadful and very distressing for disabled people and their loved ones to read,

Please can you do something?

Here is a small selection of the threads where the disability benefit bashers have paid a visit and had a field day. There may be more, but I can’t face searching for them!

Can you start your own thread if all you're going to do is benefit bash? Here isn't the place. You've been asked a few times to stop it

PandoraSocks · 16/07/2025 16:20

Ignore, TigerRag.

MyNameIsX · 16/07/2025 16:49

I don’t understand your characterisation of ‘benefit bashing’ - I am doing no such thing.

I am however perfectly entitled post information in order to stimulate healthy debate.

Ignore who, please?

Be clear, please.

This is not a thread to debate about benefits. It is a thread to highlight the disability hate on MN.
You even said earlier on that you would would stop. If you want a debate, then start your own thread. Please.

MyNameIsX · 16/07/2025 17:07

I will continue to post in good faith, and look forward to constructive discussion.

In the interim, a gentle reminder of MNHQ’s post below - salient parts in bold.

Thank you.

Hi all,
Thanks for your posts.
We’ve seen a number of reports and concerns about threads discussing the benefits system, particularly disability benefits, and whether these discussions should be allowed on Mumsnet and so we think it’s important to address this directly.
Critical conversations about how the benefits system functions, whether it’s effective, fair, or open to misuse, are permitted here. These are complex, timely issues, especially in light of ongoing political and economic change. Questioning whether the system is working as intended isn’t, in itself, disablist, it’s part of a broader national conversation that many people, including those directly affected by the system, care deeply about.
What we do not allow is disablism - and that would include posts that attack or stereotype disabled people, suggest claimants are lying en masse, or mock or belittle individuals on the basis of health conditions or support needs. Those posts will be removed, and repeat offenders may find their accounts closed.
We also want to address the term “benefits bashing,” which comes up frequently in reports. We understand that some posts feel harsh or even distressing, especially to those with experience of relying on benefits. But unless a post clearly breaks our Talk guidelines (for example, by being abusive, hateful, or targeted at individuals), it won’t be removed simply for being critical or expressing an unpopular opinion. Posts critiquing the system are fine but you cannot use someone’s benefit status as a way to discredit them in a thread.
We aim to make Mumsnet a place for difficult, real-world discussions, without allowing the tone to tip into hostility or dehumanisation. If you’re unsure whether something crosses that line, please report it and we’ll review.
Thanks
MNHQ

What is stopping you starting your own thread?

Probably the attention they're getting here.

They may be acting within talk guidelines, but I'm sure even MNHQ can see they're not acting in the spirit of the site.

They probably think they'll escape the ban hammer, but I wouldn't be so sure if I was them.

Fingers crossed anyway.

Wow mnhq.

Yet they're allowed to stay and goad on a thread about how shit we're treated.

Cool

I thought your comment was funny (and bang on).
This place make no sense at times.

ValleyClouds · 16/07/2025 21:05

Yes its not as if you used expletives, it was a fair description of the problem

PandoraSocks · 16/07/2025 22:59

FFS. This is ridiculous.

For people with mental health illness, your kind of posts on what we consider our thread, could cause them to feel suicidal.

Constructive enough for you?

PandoraSocks · 16/07/2025 23:03

@BeckyAMumsnet in the morning, could you possibly come on to thread to explain why K0OLA1D's post was deleted whilst clearly goady posts are allowed to stand?

MyNameIsX · 17/07/2025 02:53

@BeckyAMumsnet

Equally, I would be happy to discuss this.

I have not been ‘goady’, I have acted in ‘good faith’ and have actually agreed with some of the posts.

Finally, I have been compliant with your previous email containing guidance to the other posters.

Thank you.

Because you are posting goady things about benefits. This thread is not about benefits. Have you even read the OP?

Again, what is stopping you posting your own thread elsewhere? Why are you targeting this thread for your comments about benefits.

This thread is about disability hate on MN... not benefits, not the government, and not the welfare system. You keep trying to derail this thread, and are repeatedly asked not to. Why are you not listening?

One of the other posters has sought to involve MNHQ again, despite MNHQ providing full guidance, which I copied above for ready reference.

Let’s therefore wait for MNHQ’s comments.

In the interim, I will say this - I reiterate that I have no intention of ‘goading’, and I am posting information I think is helpful, and for discussion. Many of you posted about cooking and menus - how is that relevant to the thread topic, incidentally?

As I say, let’s wait for MNHQ - I shall otherwise continue to post in good faith.

The word pomposity has sprung into my mind.

I am not sure why. I will ponder over a cup of tea.

You are missing the point @MyNameIsX this thread is in Site Stuff where posters can communicate directly with MNHQ and the topic is Moderation

You are relentlessly wanting a 'debate about benefits' which is off topic - there are eleventy billion threads about benefits on AIBU/Chat/Politics/News etc - not on Site Stuff

To my mind it is provocative [goady] to insist on posting off topic like this and insisting that you can post what you like/wherever you like

K0OLA1D · 17/07/2025 07:59

@MyNameIsX One of the other posters has sought to involve MNHQ again

Going to assume here, that it was you that involved MNHQ to get my comment deleted?

Talkamongstyourselves · 17/07/2025 09:26

I am posting information I think is helpful, and for discussion.

Good for you, now go do that on another thread, or start your own, because on this thread it's neither.

HTH.

ValleyClouds · 17/07/2025 12:06

It seems to me, quite cynically, that MN are looking for this thread to turn into a bunfight so it can be deleted because a thread about the levels of bigotry/ignorance/prejudice is bad for the brand! We really need to stay on topic and it’s not hard. Just this week as well as Disabled People Need To Get Off Benefits we’ve also had Disabled People Shouldn’t Expect Anyone To Give Them A Job. The irony is apparently lost on those posters.
