Disability hate on MN

IClaudine · 02/05/2024 13:31

Hi MNHQ

Since Sunak’s announcement on disability benefits, there has been a big increase on MN in hostility towards people who receive then.

The abuse, hate and outright lies (my neighbour’s son’s cousin’s wife climbs Mount Everest but gets PIP etc) being spewed on MN towards disabled people, a group with protected characteristics, has been dreadful and very distressing for disabled people and their loved ones to read,

Please can you do something?

Here is a small selection of the threads where the disability benefit bashers have paid a visit and had a field day. There may be more, but I can’t face searching for them!

The leader of the Conservatives, Kemi Badenoch, has said she does not believe one in four people are disabled and the term is in danger of losing its meaning, as she used a speech to criticise the size of the welfare state.

Badenoch called for restrictions on disability benefits for those suffering conditions including food intolerances, anxiety and mild depression.

She made the speech at the Centre for Social Justice a week after Keir Starmer’s government scaled back the extent of its cuts to disability benefits in the face of a huge revolt from backbench Labour MPs and disability rights groups.

It is soooo hot here. Another bbq for us tonight, I think. I am thinking halloumi kebabs.

CrocusSnowdrop · 11/07/2025 16:06

Oo delicious. I've put halloumi on my shopping list for next week to have halloumi and mushroom burgers. I think it's random leftovers tonight.

ValleyClouds · 11/07/2025 16:10

It’s leftovers here too tonight, pasta with salmon in a spinach sauce

PhilippaGeorgiou · 11/07/2025 16:28

I'm going out for a meal - we are both going to squander our PIP on eating.

I hope it's something good

I have no idea what I want to eat. Too hot here to have anything

We had originally planned curry, but we are now going to a nice "classy pub garden" that has a wider range of hot weather choices (some very nice salads for example) and their home made tiramasu is to die for. Curry postponed until next week.

K0OLA1D · 11/07/2025 16:53

I think we're having halloumi wraps.

But the thought of even opening the fridge is exhausting me!

It smells like someone close is having a bbq and it smells amazing

buttnut · 11/07/2025 16:56

I went to Tesco and stocked up on cold things (crusty bread, hummus, Pringles, salad, chicken wings, fruit) as I’m refusing to cook. So will be a picnic tea.

That sounds so much better than my plan!!!

Nice to see us all taking MNHQs advice and indulging in "discussion".

XenoBitch · 11/07/2025 17:36

Ooh, I love halloumi. DP can't say it properly and calls it "loony cheese" 😂
I think I might have some this weekend. As a kebab sounds like a fab idea

You have just reminded me that next time I am in Greece I need to ask Nikos for the recipe of his deep fried cheese in pomegranate sauce.

LadyTable · 11/07/2025 18:12

This thread is embarrassing now.

Instead of completely blanking the PP who was clearly trying their hardest to take this thread off track, people continued to give them the attention they craved - thus taking the thread off track.

And now the same people are having a conversation about food that they clearly don't want to have, and which is obvious to everyone - thus still allowing that poster to have taken the thread off track.

Just carry on using the thread for the purpose it was started but actually ignore that PP! 🤦‍♀️

thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway · 11/07/2025 18:14

Honestly it's so warm I can't think of eating. DS has a horrible abscess and his poor face is badly swollen. His teeth are perfect apparently and they can't see what's causing it. He can't really tell us much how he feels with his learning difficulties. He did give me the finger when I called him chipmunk cheeks 😂.

LadyKenya · 11/07/2025 18:54

Fish fingers, chips, and beans for me tonight. Whew, it is hot!

Yep, we did that yesterday...

DS2s favourite. He calls it squeaky cheese 😄

That sounds divine!

DP decided we were having a picnic. So went to morrisons and got loads of bits. But we were hounded by bloody wasps!!!

We have already been told how we are expected to behave by MNHQ. And they have also kindly told us what is and isn't offensive to people with disabilities.

We do not need you to tell us how to behave. And since MNHQ have clarified that we have no right to be offended by ableism unless they say so, then there is no better purpose to the thread than to swop menus. If you don't like the direction of the thread and are embarassed, you are welcome to pick another one more to your liking. Personally I am more embarassed by MNHQ, but each to their own.

PandoraSocks · 11/07/2025 22:08

@buttnut I might take a leaf out of your book for tomorrow. It is going to be even hotter tomorrow here.

@thisiswheretheseagullfliesaway I hope your DS feels better soon. Dental abscesses are so painful. He sounds like a character, though!

@LadyTable I am sorry you are embarrassed by a friendly conversation.

Italianita · 11/07/2025 23:19

We were going to go away for 2 days (yes, even ill, disabled people have breaks) but it's too hot so we cancelled.

Free cancellation thank goodness.

You watch, I bet someone reading this will be jealous of my two day breaks 😋

That is a shame.

I have seen comments on here saying that disabled people who go on holiday can't be that disabled if they can manage it. Or that someone who can navigate booking flights and going to an airport, can't be that disabled, so they can get a job.

MyNameIsX · 12/07/2025 04:42

I do not understand why any reasonable person would begrudge anyone taking a holiday.
