Muslim Board

Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

I know this isn't the intended topic of this thread but may I ask about Eid? I have lovely new Sundanese neighbours and I want to welcome them. I believe Eid is on 9th/10th April and I thought about buying them a gift. So, firstly is this appropriate, secondly which day to give them it and thirdly what to buy! I thought maybe some confectionary. Any ideas gratefully received.

I'm sure it will be much appreciated! it's a very kind gesture ♡

flowers/chocs/cakes anything is fine. it's the thought that counts

Hi, that's a lovely idea, I'm sure they'd love it.

The exact date of Eid can change, looking like the 10th is most likely, I think. This Eid is basically our equivalent of Christmas - a celebration at the end of a month of celebrations and preparations, and food is always welcome!

If you don't know their preferences for sweets, a nice box of dates is almost always a safe choice. Dates are a big deal for a lot of Muslims! I like dates from Mecca, Medina and Iran best of the available options.

Traditional sweets given at Eid include barfi/burfi and baklava, but anything halal is great! Just make sure you check ingredients - some chocolates and sweets contain alcohol and some contain animal products that wouldn't be halal. I nearly ran into that issue myself the other day... I was out getting gifts and saw a shop's 'Eid sweets!' display - Great! Then realised the chocolates all contained alcohol. Not great.

ginasevern · 05/04/2024 15:24

Thanks @therealcookiemonster and @Scirocco

I wasn't really sure if buying an Eid present was a "thing" or whether I'd look a bit strange - no change there! I love the idea of dates, that's a great idea. Whatever I get I will definitely check for alcohol and gelatine.

Count me in for a Muslim board!
To be honest, I need some really good recipes from different parts of the world.
I love Moroccan cuisine (tagine +couscous being my favourite) and my Pakistani colleagues used to bring into work curries, samosas, bhajis and mango lassi. Trust me, you had to be quick in the staffroom to get any!
While I taught RE, I would like to learn more about the different cultures around Islam.

deconstructingKaren · 05/04/2024 15:45

Any type pf confectionary is a lovely idea.

Are we getting a Muslim Board ????

PinkTeaForMe · 05/04/2024 15:51

Ladies, I have a whole book dedicated to potatoes! I'm definitely signing up to the new potato board.

I really dislike potatoes, sorry.
A rice board would be great though.

I'll join you on the rice board. That's my number one favourite food! Hence the amazing biryani with potatoes combo

Maybe they can’t settle the biryani / potato question?

I’m going to request a board just for the potatoes. Seems like we can cook them in many different ways so loads to talk about it :)

No joke I’ve not been all afternoon because I’ve cooking… and course made a load of roast potatoes 😂😂
@Scirocco that looks awesome!
needs to be a cross cultural potato board 😂😂😂

EllaDisenchanted · 05/04/2024 16:31

Dilbertian · 05/04/2024 14:54

Knishes, kheer, kugel, pierogi, samosas, chip butties... never mind 'Love Thy Neighbour' - what we all have in common is clearly 'Love Thy Carbs'!

(@EllaDisenchanted, please, for the love of world peace, do not suggest to anyone that they eat Rakusens cardboard matzo.)

I was going to suggest burnt shmura matza… have you even done ashky Seder if you haven’t had a full kzais of shmura, washed down with raw beetroot and wine??
yehuda matzah for me 😅

@GoodOldEmmaNess is a religion even a religion if it doesn’t involve carbs?! 😂

IClaudine · 05/04/2024 16:31

James Martin has written a potato cook book, if anyone is interested.

I'm a serious eater, I can handle anything. if you reccommend recipes I will try them ♡

I have to say though, even though I celebrate diversity in all its glory can never understand how anyone can dislike potatoes? just doesn't make sense in my head because i would sell my own mother for a suitably delicious tray of roast potatoes (not a sign of a good muslim). I realise this is a me problem....

Matza with jam and cheddar. Actually tasty!

EllaDisenchanted · 05/04/2024 16:37

I’ve got to go light Shabbat candles, but 1st) I think we need a multi faith board based on the brilliant earlier suggestion of love thy carbs and 2nd) I hope I come back and you have got your board!

Happy Shabbat for tomorrow, EllaDisenchanted, and other Jews on the thread. Happy Friday (Jumma?) to all the Muslims on the thread.
May the carbs be with you.

TheShellBeach · 05/04/2024 16:46

Good shabbat to my Jewish friends.

Absolutely! Of course it's fine! Thats such a lovely and thoughtful idea and I'm sure your new neighbours would receive your gifts with pleasure.

Eid is about celebrating after completing a month of fasting, so anything food related will be perfect. Confectionary, baclava, or you can get some Indian sweets like barfi. Anything food related would be good and maybe some flowers. It's really more the thought that counts. Just avoid anything with gelatine and alcohol.

@LemongrassLollipop

What would you name it?

I suspect if it does happen then Mumsnet would name it something along the lines of 'Muslim Mumnetters'.

I'm actually making a potato side now to go with lamb chop masala. Does anyone have a good recipe please?
