Hi @mnhq is it possible to please request a Muslim Board on here, a safe space for Muslims to have to speak freely about things that matter and should be discussed? Similar to that of the Jewish board.

@EllaDisenchanted I posted a nice biryani recipe link earlier - enjoy!

Thanks :) found it - do you know if it would it work without the yoghurt? I’d have to leave that out

EllaDisenchanted · 06/04/2024 20:56

Exactly !! There’s no debate 🤣The mourning across the Jewish community when mccoys stopped being kosher… I think it’s been about 14 years 😭

That's terrible. McCoys do some of the best crisps. Discos are possibly better due to their burn-your-mouth level of vinegar, but it's close.

I think it would - you'd maybe want to tone down the spice a bit though. I was vegan for about a year due to DC's dairy allergy and found I had to adapt recipes. We tried vegan alternatives but they weren't really as good. Alternatively, you could swap out the meat for vegetables, would that work?

EllaDisenchanted · 06/04/2024 20:55

And we circle back to biryanis… does the invasion plan have biryanis with or without potatoes?

also (I’m a bit scared to admit this) I don’t think I’ve ever had a biryani 🤫

do you keep kosher? I am assuming that will prevent you from seeking out biryani from most restaurants. I guess the other problem is combination of meat and dairy in biryani.... but i could find some workarounds if you like and try and get a suitable recipe together for you?

the invasion biryani will 100% have potatoes. anyone trying to remove the potatoes will have to walk over my cold dead bodies. although of you wait long enough I will probably eat all the potatoes myself and it won't be the first time

I'm up for trying it! Yeah non dairy yoghurt isn't great for this kind of thing. Thank you :)

you can add grated green papaya instead as that also has a similar affect on the meat (tenderises). also you can almond paste and cashew paste while marinating to add creaminess (just soak peeled uncoated almonds for 20 minutes in room temp water and blend)

Yes, strictly kosher (not the program). I sub olive oil/marg for butter etc if I am cooking meat.

I can always have a dig around the internet as well, don't put yourself to any trouble!Thank you though :)

interesting - I use almond/oat milk in meat soup sometimes (and potatoes, no joked), and blend, for creaminess in non-dairy soups.

perfect! Thank you :) Couple of spices I would need to get, but definitely doable.

My dad’s best friend is Jewish. My mum has made a kosher biryani in the past for him. So, it’s very very possible to make your own!

Ha! What do you mean by this 'no debate' nonsense? IMO salt and vinegar crisps should be put under a cherem. (Hmmm, cherem...haram - cognates?)

TakeMe2Insanity · 06/04/2024 22:11

@DataPro for Eid breakfast we’ll have savayahn (noodles toasted in butter and then cooked in milk). For dinner (everyone has to do normal things day :( ) we’ll have lamb pilau, lamb salan, and salad. No doubt some fresh coriander chutney and yoghurt depends how much time I have.

I so fancy a biryani now.

ParsonsPont · 06/04/2024 22:35

Our speciality Eid dish is lamb stew with apricots. Which is meant to be eaten for breakfast but is too heavy for us Arabs born and raised in the UK to have in the morning, so is instead a late lunch / early dinner. That together with a lamb shank with rice…which, dare I say it, is sometimes replaced with biryani.

Next potentially controversial biryani question - not only do we use potatoes, we also put sultanas and cashew nuts in our biryani. Anyone else…?

Kasperber · 06/04/2024 22:38

When we were requesting a Jewish MNers board, there were loads of posts on that thread from non-Jewish MNers supporting the request. Pro-rata that would make the estimate of usage by Jewish members, even smaller. On the 2021 census statistics alone - 3.7 million identified as Muslim. 271,327 identified as Jewish - there has to be a greater traffic on a Muslim board than on the Jewish one .

aah lightweights

I can happily eat biryani at 5am when waking up for morning prayers. admittedly it has not helped my waistline....

yes to cashews and sultanas along with fried onions as topping. more important is the dried sour plums added to the dish during the final dam/steaming process.

Parkingt111 · 06/04/2024 23:12

I know everyone is raving over biryani but do you know what else I love, a homemade Afghani kabuli pilau with the grated sweet carrot and raisins on top! I have never made it myself but a good friend of mine often sends me some when she makes it. And now I don't know what I like more, biryani or Afghani pilau
If you haven't tried it then it's a must!

Parkingt111 · 06/04/2024 23:16

A quick Google image of it. Anyone else tried it? I'm a rubbish cook so I haven't attempted it. The motto in my kitchen is 'it's the effort that counts' or 'if you don't like it, then feel free to make it yourself' 😂

@anotherlevel this recipe seems quite good. Also has the step by step accompanied with pictures which helps.

yes! I love it too. gorgeous. quite a few good afghani restaurants around that do good kabuli pilau especially in London.

have seen some good recipes online too. quite straightforward to make

I’d be keen to know this too. There used to be a really good one near me that closed during the pandemic - yet to find an adequate replacement!
