Would you consider an Etsy/handmade/selling section?

I have an Etsy shop and website and so on. I handmake things. Not going to say what obviously.
Would you consider a section where we can share our shops? Under name changes but you could set it so you must be a regular contributor and / or have been a member for more than however long, and people can report shops that are drop shippers.

I'd certainly pay for that. Maybe you have to be a premium member to have access to that facility? Anyone can view or comment but only premium members can share their shops?

You could be allowed only, say, one post a week to stop spamming the board with thread after thread?

The seller. People won't buy from an anonymous person.

Veggieburgers · 29/02/2024 16:51

Or at least, the shop name and location, if not the actual name.

HumanRightsAreHumanRights · 29/02/2024 16:53

If Mumsnet had their own version of Etsy where they made sure it wasn't full of tat from drop shippers etc.., I'd be interested.

I'd love to see a pro women company set up a hub for genuinely hand crafted items from female owned small businesses.
That would be the USP for me & I'd trust the Mumsnet brand to bring it.

If it's just a bunch of links to Etsy or elsewhere, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole.

And it would be a completely different business from running a forum alongside a bit of sponsored content.

FabFebHalfTerm · 29/02/2024 20:14

@IncompleteSenten

As a buyer I'd love Genuine Posters to be able to link to their small businesses on threads. I'd also like them to have a place to talk about their small businesses/other platforms such as Etsy (great when it started, utter crap now.

you sound lively & if everyone else was I can see it working, but in the real world, not so much (sorry). I think there's just so much moderation required, it's not feasible.

id love sellers to link to their Etsy or website whatever, as I'd love to support them.

spidermonkeys · 29/02/2024 20:31

Love this idea

MaMisled · 29/02/2024 20:52

I also love the sound of this! I do think moderating it will be hard though. There will be so many non hand made sellers trying their luck plus all those " I can get you many more sales" people plying their trade!. For genuinely hand made products that take hours, days, weeks to make, 'many more sales' wouldn't be workable!

Would we include unwanted craft supplies? Our genuine surplus?

IncompleteSenten · 01/03/2024 23:21

SecretSoul · 29/02/2024 14:57

I’d love this too! People being able to post requests and people giving their etsy link would be perfect.

Actually, that might be a better idea than mine.
A 'find genuinely hand made' section where people post what sorts of things they're looking for and we can post our links in reply. And if any suggestions are proven to be temu shite and reported, they get deleted.

Plus maybe a regular pinned thread as a single general resource sellers can post once on if anyone wants an idle browse.

There is a good website here in Finland - https://thefinlandshop.com/. Everything is handmade and can be trusted and verified with the made in Finland seal. It's maybe an idea for someone to step up to the Etsy giants for women in the UK?? I would love to start something like this! I've totally had enough of temu it's makes me sick how they can sell so cheaply!

The Finland Shop - online store for Finnish products

The Finland Shop on uusi Suomessa syntyneiden tuotteiden verkkokauppa. Meiltä löydät tarkkaan valikoidut, kotimaiset design tuotteet kodin sisustuksesta asusteisiin. Lupaamme huippupalvelun ja nopean toimituksen. Tervetuloa!

I can see the value of a site that promoted high qualify female run businesses.. but it’s a very different business to mumsnet. It’s a lot to have to get involved in disputes

QuirkyCrow · 02/03/2024 23:22

Some quick research found a few sites like this - https://madebymums.co/sellers/ - it would be nice to have Mumsnet onboard as a support network or just a safe space to share our shops. I'll watch this space for progress! :)

But anyone could get on that.

ChampagneCommunist · 03/03/2024 20:03

Yes please!

PangoPurrl · 04/03/2024 21:16

Not to be pedantic, but there are a certain amount of us on here who are not actually mums. Personally I used the conception boards, then pregnancy, then miscarriages/loss and ended up staying for relationships/chat/aibu etc..

BeckyAMumsnet · 05/03/2024 14:02

Hi, everyone - thanks for bearing with us. We've no objections to the idea in principle but it would be good to get a bit more information about what you're looking for. We don't want spammers etc so we are thinking along the lines of a similar setup to the Non-member requests board where people can post for a small fee - what price do you think is fair? As far as names go, we were thinking of Handmade/Handcrafted sellers/goods/gifts?

Ultimately, we want the section to be useful to you so any feedback is very welcome.

Non-member requests | Mumsnet

Mumsnet makes parents' lives easier by pooling knowledge, advice and support on everything from conception to childbirth, from babies to teenagers.

IncompleteSenten · 05/03/2024 15:07

Hi.
Would it be a fee per post or a one off fee or an annual fee? Or maybe a fee that allows you x number of posts?
Would we be allowed to respond to people asking for ideas for gifts with links to items we make that they might be interested in on other sections of the board if we had paid the membership/posting fee? (Respond only, not post our own threads)

OP posts:
IncompleteSenten · 05/03/2024 15:09

I'd be happy to pay say an annual or monthly subscription but I'd really like to know you would remove any posts that were drop shippers or resellers and keep the board truly hand made.

OP posts:
IncompleteSenten · 05/03/2024 15:20

Would you have a clickable list of members so that people could learn a bit about us if they wanted to?

Posting for a small fee is good, as part of that it would need to be possible to comment on posts where posters are looking for gift ideas. Maybe a monthly fee which allows this

Geebray · 05/03/2024 20:47

Well here I am with my cold water again, but how are you going to get attention for this new board? Have you looked at the Non-member request board? Zero traffic. Mumsnetters will be paying money for - what?

If mumsnet allowed you to post your links on threads outwith the board where people were looking for gift ideas etc. I would pay a fee happily.
