Numbered lists are misaligned

If I include a numbered list in my posts, then when I submit them, the first item is always indented by auto-formatting, but subsequent items aren't, so it looks untidy. I'd prefer it if no auto-formatting was done at all, or if there was some way for me to control it. Here is an example, which will (hopefully) demonstrate the issue when I submit this post:

  1. Item 1
  1. Item 2
  2. Item 3

p.s. I'm using Chrome on an Android phone.

Hi @tellem !

  1. I'm going to try this out myself.
  2. They look like they're aligning for me.
  3. If this still aligns when I hit 'post' we'll see if anyone else here can figure out a way round it and get back to you.
tellem · 15/11/2023 09:16

@HebeMumsnet are you using Chrome on Android?

This time I'm going to include a screenshot from before I submit, so you can see I'm not doing anything strange:

  1. Item 1
  2. Item 2
  3. Item 3

Checking on Edge desktop

  1. Item 1
  2. Item 2
  3. Item 3

Will repeat from Edge on Android

tribpot · 15/11/2023 09:19

Looking at the underlying HTML of @tellem 's first post, the second two items aren't part of the ordered list (<ol> tag), they're just paragraphs that happen to start with a number. Not suggesting that you did something to make that happen, @tellem !

Looking on both Chrome and Edge on Android, I couldn't get a post to add either bullet points or a numbered list.

123ZYX · 15/11/2023 09:28

On the app (iPhone and iPad)the first item always becomes a bullet point then the rest of the list is numbered

So if I do a bulleted list

  • like
  • this
  • one

How does that look in the app @123ZYX ?

HebeMumsnet · 15/11/2023 09:52

Thanks for your help, everyone. That's interesting to see on different devices and browsers.

@tellem We've got some people looking at this on Android now. We'll get back to you as soon as we have any news.

Bullets show properly as bullets for me

just to confirm:

  • I can
  • do bullets
  1. and numbered lists
  2. on the mobile site from an iOS device.
tribpot · 16/11/2023 07:44

But on Android

  • nothing
  • Ah until I post it
  1. Either numbered or un-numbered?
  2. No, it works once it's posted but not before, which I suspect is what @tellem saw yesterday
EversoDisorganised · 16/11/2023 07:48

I really wish you'd just get rid of the autoformatting. I'm on the 26 books list and when I want to start a sentence with a paragraph number it defaults back to 1. unless I use a different punctuation mark.

  1. I actually typed 26. here but it changed to 1. This is really annoying and unnecessary.

To be clear @tribpot , what I see is shown below. The white image is before posting and the green image is after. I"m just using plain text with no formating. It is autoformated when I post it.

On the app that all looks like bullets....

  1. I am on Android
  2. I am using Chrome
  3. It's all wrong for me too.

When I write the post, the numbers align. Then it posts and only the first is indented, then there's a paragraph break and the next two aren't indented.

tribpot · 16/11/2023 07:53

Even more intriguing @tellem so the opposite behaviour to what I saw, where the list appeared unformatted until posting. Yours appeared formatted until posting.

I'd never picked up on this autonumbering problem that @EversoDisorganised mentions, where it converts all numbers back to 1 (presumably treating each one as the start of a new numbered list)

tribpot · 16/11/2023 07:55

Okay so I only posted a single numbered item (Chrome on Android) so here goes

  1. Item 1 in the list. No auto formatting seems to have happened
  2. I typed this 2 manually, no autoformatting
  3. I'll number this paragraph as 1 as well just cos
  4. End.
Lougle · 16/11/2023 07:55
  • bullet points
  • work on Android Chrome
  • if you use
  • hyphen
  • then
  • space
tribpot · 16/11/2023 07:57
  1. What if I number each one 1
  2. Will it convert these

  4. Maybe not

tribpot · 16/11/2023 07:58

Right so that's how you can get autonumbering to work on Android - just use 1 for every item and it will convert it on posting. But don't leave a line in between.

tellem · 16/11/2023 07:58

@tribpot the autoformating happened after you posted, not before:

tribpot · 16/11/2023 08:01

That's right @tellem on iOS and desktop you see the autoformatting before posting but on Android you don't (and it isn't actually doing it until posting, hence why if you manually type a list entry that starts with 2 it isn't including it in the list, just treating it as a regular paragraph that starts 2).

I think the workaround if you want numbered paras is to number them all 1.
