UPDATE FROM MNHQ: User generated polls

BeckyAMumsnet · 13/11/2023 10:07

User generated polls - new feature on all boards.

Most of you will be familiar with AIBU polls in which you can vote YABU or YANBU on AIBU threads. In response to user requests, we're now giving you the power to create custom polls to threads beyond AIBU.

Whether you're discussing parenting, relationships, or the latest parking dilemma, polls are a great way to gather quick feedback and opinions from fellow Mumsnetters. You will be able to write a question and add up to six answer options.

To create a poll outside of AIBU:

  • Start a new thread in your selected topic
  • Select the button ‘Add poll’
  • Write your question
  • Add between 2 and 6 answer options
  • Select your poll duration (3 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days)
  • Post it live
While we want everyone to enjoy and get the most out of the polls feature, we do have a few rules to keep things civilised. In line with our existing Talk guidelines:
  • No deliberately inflammatory questions or options
  • No hate speech
  • No personal attacks
  • No market research
  • No posting the same poll twice
We’ll review things as we go along and may add additional guidance if necessary. In the meantime, post any questions or comments below and we’ll do our best to address them

Ooh, exciting. I love a poll, and the nerdier MNers will find all sorts of interesting stuff to do with it

But I do agree with Shirley, pleeeeeasseeee move the Reply button.
a) because it's misleading, and makes newbies think they can use it to reply to a particular post
b) because it's actively inciting people not to RTFT

SoupDragon · 13/11/2023 22:12

I might start a poll asking whether people want new features or all the broken/irritating stuff fixed 🤣🤣

I haven't got a reply button on the desktop site?

I've got 'add message' on the left under the posts or 'quote' under the ellipses button.

Quote should be where the bookmark button is but I'm assuming its within the ellipses button to garner more clicks for the ad revenue. Notice how the function you actually want to use are within the ellipses menu? quote, edit, see all. So transparent.

Really pisses me off that they've restricted access to app only, if you have the app installed. What possible reason can there be for this? if you cant use all the features in the app, you should at least be able to switch to the mobile site if you want to use them 🙄🙄🙄

I have the app installed and am not restricted to it at all.

Great idea. Can I start with one poll:

Do you think MN should concentrate on fixing the issues users raise such as turning off the reply button and putting the quote button back there instead, ahead of creating features no one has asked for?
A. No
B. Yes

(Ps, but seriously, plleeeeeaaaasssee can you move it? You’ve taken it offline to discuss for weeks now)

B

Did any user ever actually ask for this?

In days of old, when it were all green fields round here, ideas for features of the site would be raised by users, talked through in threads and commissioned only if enough users actually wanted the feature.

These days it seems all to be imposed from the top.

Whereas what users actually want ( some fixes and better working on some platforms) just don't get done in a timely manner.

AuntieStella · 14/11/2023 09:57

I haven't got a reply button on the desktop site?

That's because the layout id not the same depending on which platform you are using.

This riles me for historic reasons. Functionality was removed from desktop - such as being able to customise Active Convos to show who made last comment and when, and that was decried - because you could no longer see who was around, or spot easily from Active if there were posts since you last looked (much easier to remember a person or a time than just the number of posts)

But MNHQ pressed on, as it was important that users had the same experience regardless which platform and neither app nor mobile did it, so no-one could have it.

And then they do and add new features, such as the (useless) "reply" button without same regard to all platforms being the same.

Maybe I'm being stupid but there's so much I can't do on the app it's practically useless and this just seems like one more thing to add to the list:

Can't vote on or see polls
Can't filter to OP posts only
Can't attach photos
Can't see pages - just one loooong list of up to 1000 posts
Can't find a glossary of acronyms
Can't see new "thanks" feature
Now even when I look up the website on my phone it takes me directly to the app.

I'm sure there's more that I've brought up before but that's all I can think of for now.
It's so frustrating!!! I'm about to give up!!!!

Add - can't quote a quote.

Or see them on another post.

JaneJeffer · 14/11/2023 11:19

I'm kind of dreading the app update. Was there ever an update where something didn't go wrong?

Really pisses me off that they've restricted access to app only, if you have the app installed.

I have the app installed and am not restricted to it at all.

They had an announcement on it once. If you have the app installed, if you google mumsnet and click, you wont be taken to the mobile site, you will be taken to the app. If you click on a link to a MN thread, you will be taken to the app. Basically if you have the app installed, you can onkly use the app.

I did manage to use the mobile site via incognito mode when I need to do something but I had to log in and it was a faff.

Fuck knows why they think this is a good idea.

JaneJeffer · 14/11/2023 15:22

I have the app but I can use the mobile site on Safari as well!

tribpot · 14/11/2023 15:42

It sounds like you can go to Mumsnet in the mobile browser (like you could have a bookmark saved with the URL or you could just start typing it in) but when you click on a link somewhere else (e.g. google results) the phone has to work out what to do with that - launch a browser or launch an app associated with the URL (same thing happens with lots of apps). It's set up to launch the app.

So basically you can get to the mobile site even with the app installed but you need to know or bookmark the URL. However, what happens when you're in the mobile browser and you click on a link to, say, go to a particular thread? Does that launch the app?

I've just clicked on a link in an email and gone to the mobile site. (Googled Mumsnet, clicked on a link in a Twitter* post that came up)

*yes, I know it's called X but that's bloody ridiculous

JaneJeffer · 14/11/2023 16:51

No @tribpot it stays on the site

I can't get the mobile site on my phone unless I use incognito, or uninstall the app.

Yes, if I use Brave or Ghostery on ios and see the exact same site presentation as on the desktop - no extra stuff appearing or the app kicking off.

If I use Safari without blocking cookies it keeps offering to open the app but I can ignore it - its just annoying. The site presentation is still the same format as the desktop.

I assume its just trying to force app use, even though its being replaced.

I wondered whether that was the issue.

GettinChillyHereFFS · 14/11/2023 18:59

I use chrome on android.

TheresaCrowd · 20/11/2023 11:04

I'm on desktop (Chrome) and I haven't seen a single one of these new polls.

I know how to start one, but outside of AIBU I still haven't seen one.

Anyone else? Confused
