UPDATE FROM MNHQ: User generated polls

BeckyAMumsnet · 13/11/2023 10:07

User generated polls - new feature on all boards.

Most of you will be familiar with AIBU polls in which you can vote YABU or YANBU on AIBU threads. In response to user requests, we're now giving you the power to create custom polls to threads beyond AIBU.

Whether you're discussing parenting, relationships, or the latest parking dilemma, polls are a great way to gather quick feedback and opinions from fellow Mumsnetters. You will be able to write a question and add up to six answer options.

To create a poll outside of AIBU:

  • Start a new thread in your selected topic
  • Select the button ‘Add poll’
  • Write your question
  • Add between 2 and 6 answer options
  • Select your poll duration (3 hours, 24 hours, 3 days, 7 days)
  • Post it live
While we want everyone to enjoy and get the most out of the polls feature, we do have a few rules to keep things civilised. In line with our existing Talk guidelines:
  • No deliberately inflammatory questions or options
  • No hate speech
  • No personal attacks
  • No market research
  • No posting the same poll twice
We’ll review things as we go along and may add additional guidance if necessary. In the meantime, post any questions or comments below and we’ll do our best to address them

Great idea. Can I start with one poll:

Do you think MN should concentrate on fixing the issues users raise such as turning off the reply button and putting the quote button back there instead, ahead of creating features no one has asked for?
A. No
B. Yes

(Ps, but seriously, plleeeeeaaaasssee can you move it? You’ve taken it offline to discuss for weeks now)

HebeMumsnet · 13/11/2023 10:56

Hi there @ShirleyPhallus. Thanks for your patience on this. We do agree that the term 'reply' is misleading. We're working on it currently and just trying to work out what the best combination and placement of buttons are, as we know that different users want different things from the new arrangement, so it's just a case of working out the best way forward before we implement anything. Thanks for bearing with us.

TheresaCrowd · 13/11/2023 10:59

This looks like a great idea 👍

tribpot · 13/11/2023 11:17

You can now put 2 to 6 options for what to do with the Reply button to a vote @HebeMumsnet , why not give it a whirl.

I don't use the app but feel compelled to ask if this new feature is available in the app? As you didn't mention it wasn't I assume it is.

tribpot · 13/11/2023 11:28

... that said, I can't see the new add poll button in the browser so maybe this is an app-only feature?

TheresaCrowd · 13/11/2023 11:41

@tribpot I'm using a browser on my laptop and I can see it.

You have to actually click to start a thread and then it's down the bottom.

I've (hopefully) attached a screenshot.

Think you'll need to click on the photo to see it down the bottom.

tribpot · 13/11/2023 11:43

Ah yes I see it now @TheresaCrowd - I don't think that was there when I was looking earlier.

But lots of people asked to be able to vote in polls site-wide. There was a big discussion on it during the summer and lots of people suggested it as a solution to stop people posting inappropriate stuff in AIBU just to get the voting option.

DeireadhFomhair · 13/11/2023 12:31

Is time limit on AIBU polls part of this new feature? I see you now only have 2 & a bit days to vote @BeckyAMumsnet @HebeMumsnet

BeckyAMumsnet · 13/11/2023 12:44

@DeireadhFomhair AIBU polls have been updated to match custom polls. The default duration for all polls is three days but you can change this in the dropdown menu.

BeckyAMumsnet · 13/11/2023 12:49

@tribpot At the moment, polls are only available on desktop and mobile. We're in the process of completely rebuilding the mobile apps, which is a big job and is taking time. We know it's frustrating for app users but please bear with us!

tribpot · 13/11/2023 13:01

@BeckyAMumsnet thanks for the confirmation. Could you please make a policy when announcing new features or fixes to say whether or not they're available on the app?

I have to say I'm not really sure why you are rebuilding the apps rather than just decommissioning them but that's a different thread!

It won't be in the android app, don't be silly!

Apologies, @tribpot - that was an oversight.

Decommissioning?? Don't be giving them ideas! Some of us prefer apps.

tribpot · 13/11/2023 16:20

Other than a lack of features, what is it you prefer about the app over using the website in a browser, @JaneJeffer ? I'm just interested - MN are obviously (slowly) rebuilding the apps anyway so don't worry you will give them ideas to scrap them 😀

JaneJeffer · 13/11/2023 16:25

The app is more streamlined. Mobile site has all this extra gubbins and is way slower.

Thanks for that update. It will be a really useful feature, especially as Baby Names is favourite board of mine.

StressyMcStressFace · 13/11/2023 17:20

Maybe I'm being stupid but there's so much I can't do on the app it's practically useless and this just seems like one more thing to add to the list:

Can't vote on or see polls
Can't filter to OP posts only
Can't attach photos
Can't see pages - just one loooong list of up to 1000 posts
Can't find a glossary of acronyms
Can't see new "thanks" feature
Now even when I look up the website on my phone it takes me directly to the app.

I'm sure there's more that I've brought up before but that's all I can think of for now.
It's so frustrating!!! I'm about to give up!!!!

JaneJeffer · 13/11/2023 17:31

@StressyMcStressFace you can add photos and see only OP posts on the iOS app

I don't like pages anyway

JaneJeffer · 13/11/2023 17:33

I hope when it is updated it doesn't look like that mobile page I posted <shudder>. I'll probably have expired by the time it's done though so I suppose it doesn't matter.

Trust me to have Android (which according to Google accounts for 70% of the operating system share🙄)

NotTerfNorCis · 13/11/2023 21:15

Hi. Fair enough extending polls to more boards, but I'm not so sure about time limiting them. It's disappointing when you get to a thread and find you're too late to vote.
