What's happening? In the last few days using Mumsnet is suddenly making phone run hot and draining the battery.

It also glitches. The words often take ages appear, especially when I'm typing using the swipe method, and the buttons at the bottom of the screen stop working.

iPhone SE2020 iOS 16.6

Hi OP

Thanks for getting in touch.
When a new iOS release comes out (and especially with new phones), there is a tonne of background stuff that goes on in the first few days - it reindexes all photos, does loads of machine learning on device etc. So it could be related to this.

However we do want to investigate and get more information. Could you post the battery information screen? We'll include examples below!

So why is it not happening with other apps? If it was to do with that and I'm dubious (I'm a software engineer and know IOS), it would be an issue for ever other app and also be an issue, regardless of if the MN app is being used.

Aparecium · 26/09/2023 18:13

Here you go. You can see what happened to the battery when I started MNing.

I have just deleted the app and reinstalled it. So far so good. I'll have a play on MN and see how it gets on. It's usually fine at first, but then goes downhill. (Are you try to tell me something? 'Get off MN and go talk to your dc!')

Quite. It took me a few days to work out what was going on, because my phone seemed to be getting randomly hot and draining battery faster than expected. And this turned out to be when MN was running in the background.

Battery usage per app:
Last 24h Mumsnet 87%
Last 10 days Mumsnet 59%

Same issue for me and it is only mumsnet that is doing it

stilldumdedumming · 26/09/2023 18:41

There is another thread on this with a holding response from mnhq and no update. It's just started happening to mine too. It's clearly the only app doing it.

stilldumdedumming · 26/09/2023 18:43

In fact I was driving with Apple Maps on but MN has taken 4x as much battery just in the background!

Tilllly · 26/09/2023 18:54

Mine was same but has settled today

KnickerlessParsons · 26/09/2023 18:58

Same here. On my work phone as well as my own phone.

Yes I'm not buying that either for exactly those reasons.

I use MN through the desktop version more than the app but I turned on the app to use after seeing this thread and I see the same thing - one phone on ios 16.7 and the other on 17. Only when the MN app is active does the battery consumption increase.

Interestingly if I block adds the effect is much smaller...Perhaps the ios hates those large, intrusive, flashy adds even more than I do!

LilyMumsnet · 27/09/2023 14:57

For those who have uninstalled and reinstalled the app, can we ask if this has continued to help?

It's improved. I deliberately left MN running in the background today, and accessed it over 4G rather than wifi, and my phone has not heated up. MN is still draining the battery faster than it should. The yellow highlights are when MN was running in the background, the pink is when I was actively using it.

Thanks, OP. We'll continue to look into this. Flowers

Aparecium · 10/10/2023 19:34

Mumsnet is doing it again. The app is overheating the phone and is gobbling battery.

Hi again @Aparecium. Sorry to hear this issue has returned. It sounds like this is a bug in iOS. We've been told that Apple have released a new iOS version a couple of days ago so there will hopefully be some improvement soon.

In the meantime, if anyone having this issue could post the screenshots we mentioned, that would be great. It would be useful to get both the Battery Usage and Activity screens. This is what we are looking for.

This is also happening for me again.

Iwillnotdancewiththedevil · 18/10/2023 21:21

I'm getting the overheating but battery life seems normal. I've been on here for prob around 10mins, and the phone is now too hot to hold.

Iwillnotdancewiththedevil · 18/10/2023 21:22

And it only happens with this app, all others on my phone are ok.

Tallisker · 18/10/2023 23:23

My phone is so hot whilst using Mumsnet. I've been following a court case chat today so there's a lot of time, but it's ridiculous the amount of battery the Mumsnet app is using.

It's not just the app. The website hammers the battery on my ipad and also on my windows laptop, which sounds like it's going to take off as the fans are whirring.

Cherryblossom81 · 19/10/2023 07:47

Just been on Mumsnet approx 10 mins and battery has gone from 100% to 45%!

Gazelda · 19/10/2023 09:09

Any update on a fix for this?
