Shopping - why am I seeing this?

23 replies

AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 08:44

I suddenly have an extra box on the right under "trending"

It says that it is "Mumsnet Shopping" - except it clearly isn't.

It seems to be some version of "Trending" but it isn't even the same as the Trending box above.

Can you make it go away please? I'm using a Lenovo laptop with a chrome browser

I have it to-I cynically expect there is some financial incentive for Mumsnet? do they get money if links clicked on?
Grubby

AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 09:03

Well they aren't even "shopping" links.

Even if they were, I still wouldn't click as I'm not in the UK and they are unlikely to be relevant!

Hi @AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye - the shopping box features popular threads where users are discussing and sharing products. MNers tell us they find product recommendations from other users one of the most useful things about the site - the aim of shopping box is to help them find those more easily.

Like most websites, Mumsnet carries some affiliate marketing links, so if you buy something through our posts, we may get a small share of the sale.

AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 09:42

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

That doesn't really answer my question.

Why am I suddenly seeing it today? It has never been there before, I usually only see the "Trending" box.

How is a thread about BAs drinks trolley policy or a Ryanir fit to fly letter related to shopping?

OP posts:
AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 10:24

So now I have:

South Carolina family hotel

Thinking of Centre parcs EU

Vietnam - Halong Bay

Pretty sure that all of those fall under travel/holidays not shopping.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 25/04/2023 10:37

Hi @AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye we released it yesterday, which is why you're seeing it now. People do shop around for holidays - it's part of the fun in planning the getaway. We're not seeing the drinks trolley thread in there now - it's likely that less relevant threads would drop off.

AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 11:02

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Thank you. So it's a new feature, that's all I needed to know.

I'm still seeing the drinks trolley one and the fit to fly one, and now I have one about sleep apnoea.

Either shopping in the UK has changed a lot since I was there or your algorithm might need a bit of tweaking! 😁

Any Bum Bum cream on the list? Grin

BertieBotts · 25/04/2023 11:16

The bum bum thread is indeed on the list Grin

But also one about a rabbit! I assume pet, rather than rampant.

I miss discussions of the day - if you're going to add loads of random links to display all at once, can we have that one back?

JaneJeffer · 25/04/2023 11:18

Hmm an easy way of advertising your product then 🤔

AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 13:46

People do shop around for holidays - it's part of the fun in planning the getaway

Gosh if only there were a dedicated "holidays" board to ask these sort of questions.

Anyone shopping for allocated sunbeds?

Also - "This house decor is something else" What are we shopping for on that thread?

Why invent clog up the page with a new feature that a) doesn't even work in the first place and b) could easily be achieved by a very quick google.

AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 13:48

Now I have "BPD diagnoses in the 90s/00s..."

OP posts:
AndyandTeddyarewavinggoodbye · 25/04/2023 16:47

Now "Is it a sin to cut down a tree"

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet
It clearly isn't working.
Please take it away and lose it down the back of the sofa

When similar threads and this new shopping thing collide it's going to get interesting, people will be trying in vain to find Waitrose bottom butter.

kittensinthekitchen · 27/04/2023 00:24

WTF does a "sore bum" have to do with shopping @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet ?

Shopping - why am I seeing this?
JaneJeffer · 27/04/2023 01:17

Aha! See!

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 28/04/2023 09:20

Can we at least have the option to hide it? Really ruins the flow of using Mumsnet on phone to me. I usually scroll to the bottom of the page to find a new thread to read in trending. And now I either click on a shopping thing instead or have to scroll back up a bit to get to trending

readbooksdrinktea · 28/04/2023 09:54

Option to hide would be appreciated. It's like the Christmas box in December. Unnecessary.

CarlaH · 28/04/2023 13:09

Another vote for finding a way to hide this feature.

kittensinthekitchen · 04/05/2023 19:27

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Have MNHQ acknowledged there's an issue here yet? Am currently seeing a thread about identifying a plant, and one from someone who has been tasked with writing a eulogy for an abusive parent, which has posters detailing abusive and difficult childhoods.

I will repeat, what the fuck does that have to do with shopping??

Will you actually respond this time please, thank you.

Rogue1001MNer · 04/05/2023 19:43

Blimey! One wonders what suggestions the folk on the sex topics will be getting <the mind boggles>

kittensinthekitchen · 24/05/2023 18:22

Hi @YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet I'm Still waiting on a response from you to this thread - which I'm sure you're aware of.

Do you like oranges? I ask, again, what the fuck does that have to do with shopping?

Hello @kittensinthekitchen we've removed those threads from the shopping box and will do the same for any erroneous threads that are included. Thanks for making us aware.

Can we politely request that you don't swear at us, please? Thanks.
