"Aw snap"

Pinkywoo · 27/01/2023 10:42

If I see this screen one more time I think I will snap! It's happening on every single thread now so I constantly lose my place and end up giving up. Please don't tell me to go to 25 posts per page (that's equally annoying as it spends more time loading than reading), I'm not on See All just 100 at a time.

On Android phone using Chrome

Aw snap.

Ive not bad this problem OP. iPhone user here

toomuchfaster · 27/01/2023 10:49

I'm with you! I've almost stopped using because I get it loading nearly every page sometimes then not for a little while then it's back!! Using Chrome on Android.

CrepuscularCat · 27/01/2023 12:15

This happens to me quite often, too - not every thread, but enough to be annoying. I use Chrome on a Linux laptop, Android tablet and Android phone, and it happens on all three devices.

Firefox on the laptop doesn't actually crash, but becomes glacially slow and nearly unusable.

LilyMumsnet · 27/01/2023 15:08

Hi all

Thanks for flagging this.

We're aware of the issue where longer threads take longer to load if viewing more than 25 posts per page. We don't have any updates for this at the moment and so the best we can advise is to view less posts per page.

We know this is frustrating but it will resolve this problem.

Pinkywoo · 27/01/2023 15:22

I know you're aware of it, but is it actually being worked on? Mumsnet is becoming unusable and limiting what users can read isn't really helping.

OP posts:
TinyArsePhone · 27/01/2023 15:24

Why has this become a problem when it didn't used to be? Before the replatforming last year, I had spent 13 years on MN happily reading posts set to display 1000 per page.

Since then, it has gone to shit.

Why?? And why can't you fix it, when it used to work fine?

R0ckets · 27/01/2023 15:36

Another who gets it regularly enough for it to annoy me and get on my nerves.

I also a agree with a PP staying just view 25 posts a page isn't really a solution, it's poor form to not be trying to actually fix the problem. If you don't want us to be able to view more than 25 posts without it breaking the site then why have the option.

LemonJuiceFromConcentrate · 27/01/2023 15:40

Huh, I've never seen this (iPhone and Windows desktop)

wisewomanmummy · 27/01/2023 17:55

I'm having this same problem, nearly stopped using MN as it's so annoying. Happens on my Samsung tablet on Chrome and on my iPhone the screen just goes black.

CinnabarRed · 27/01/2023 18:43

Me too. I believe it’s to do with the adverts, personally. It never happened while I paid the MN subscription. But I cancelled late last year, and boom. Issues with loading ever since.

isthismylifenow · 27/01/2023 18:48

It's so bloody annoying. I know I've been mentioned on some long threads, but I cannot post any responses as I keep getting this bloody aw snap.

And I'm not changing to 25 per page, as that is equally annoying.

When MN actually do something about it, myself and I'm sure many others, may start contributing a bit more again.

LivMumsnet · 29/01/2023 11:37

Sorry to hear how many of you are finding this annoying - we totally understand and Tech are on it, promise. We hope to have a positive update for you soon.

GrabbyGabby · 31/01/2023 10:10

Yep me too. I have to quit the site and come back in again. Soooo annoying

ceecee32 · 31/01/2023 14:56

So sick of seeing this message when trying to get to the end of a post. I've given up more times than I can remember and just leave the site.
Perhaps you could have a 'go to end' button the way you have a 'back to top' one

LilyMumsnet · 31/01/2023 16:35

Hello

The workaround until we have this fixed is to view less posts per page.
We know this is frustrating and can assure you that view all is being worked on as we speak.

Beyonsp · 01/02/2023 05:44

I get this a lot and only on mumsnet (chrome, android) and I only have the standard 25 per page.

Hello

Please could you email us on [email protected] with a screen recording?
We will try and replicate this and find out what's going on here.

fdgdfgdfgdfg · 01/02/2023 20:17

Yep, there's a spectacular memory leak somewhere on this site. Leave a page open for am hour on chrome on mobile or PC, and the tab will have crashed by the time you get back.

It's been doing it for months, spectacularly bad web coding.

Yes! The pages just freeze if left open for more than, oooh, 15 minutes. You have to close the tab and open a new one to get it to respond. I don't get that with any other websites, only MN and only since the replatforming last year. I used to load up several long threads before heading down onto the underground to keep me entertained - can't do that any more, they freeze up and then try to reload and crash the browser.

idonotmind · 01/02/2023 20:39

Oh god OP - I have exactly this same problem.

I clear my cache. I try to be patient. But bloody hell, @MN you are losing customers over this. It is extremely frustrating and TBH the bloody message is infantile.

We've been through the mill with MN - the recent 'improvements", hacking back in the day etc etc but this may be curtains for me. It's just not user friendly anymore.

Android on Chrome -

idonotmind · 01/02/2023 20:40

You want us to send a pic of the error message to this email: [email protected]

I will do too

LilyMumsnet · 01/02/2023 21:11

Hi all

We know this is an issue that many of you are frustrated with, and so we wanted to give you a more detailed response explaining where we're currently at with this.

We can absolutely assure you that we are in the process of trying fixing this. But it’s proving to be more complicated than it appears.

When you view 1,000 posts per page, it shows x40 more data compared to just 25 posts per page. This extra information along with other features added since Talk transformation can be too much for some devices, causing them to crash.
We know this isn’t the perfect solution by any means, but 25 posts per page is the best solution we have right now.

We're working with a third party to try to resolve the problem as a priority but truthfully we don't know how long it will take to find a solution at this point.

If you are experiencing this issue whilst viewing 25 posts per page, please do send us a screen recording as this should not be happening.

I get that it's 40x as much data, but it's text. It's a couple of megabytes at most, and that's including the adverts! No web browser should be struggling with that. And they're not, when the page first loads it's fine.

Something behind the scenes is eating memory over time, and it doesn't matter how long the thread is, I've seen it happen on threads with 3 posts!

Asking us to send screenshots / specs etc is wasting our time, it's an easily reproducible issue, test it yourselves!

I feel that way about this response to lots of the problems MN has had in the past few years. It amazes me that sometimes even for extremely wide spread issues we are asked to provide proof and evidence when it's clear that if just a handful of people at MNs end logged onto an account they would likely be met with the same issue.

That's what I was wondering. How much data does just plain text actually need? I'm a premium user though not for much longer if this doesn't get sorted so there's not even any adverts to load. In fact the whole reason I subscribe to premium is that our home internet is appalling (very rural area, ancient cables, no fibre optic or super fast broadband for us) and having no ads makes all the difference in how fast pages load.
