Please change it back. There’s no need for this.

It’s harder to read. It’s tiring on my eyes. Surely there’s some other way to honour the queen than making the site less user friendly?

Sorry hadn’t spotted the other thread-I’ll get this one pulled as a duplicate

I agree. It's now less accessible to people with disabilities.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 12/09/2022 17:18

Hi @PurpleDaisies and @BringBackCoffeeCreams we're sorry you don't like it. Could you let us know what accessibility issues it's causing, please?
(It's only the logo and navigation bar that has changed - the rest of the site is the same.) Thank you.

Username917778 · 12/09/2022 17:56

Is there an option for me to turn this back to normal?

TooMuchToDoTooLittleInclination · 12/09/2022 18:00

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

its perfectly fine!

I dislike it, it would take some getting used to if it was permanent, but as an acknowledgement of the Queen's death, it's fitting.

Its too much black. If the buttons went back to normal, that would make a massive difference. I don’t think that would be less honouring to the queen.

I find black text on a white and black background harsher and less comfortable to read than the usual gentle blue and white and black text.

It is very hard to distinguish parts of the site.

Accessibility is also about the colours used not just the layout.

I can only answer for myself. I have autism and ADHD and struggle with focus and concentrating. The white on black writing kind of jumps around and I can't focus on it. It's like I have beer goggles on.

When I scroll down I can't adjust properly to the normal colours. It's like the black in the names is brighter than usual (even though it isn't) and so I can't focus so easily on the text. Eventually I can adjust to it, but then I go to the top of the next page and it starts all over again.

I'm typing this relying on my touch typing ability as the bottom black strip is in view and is messing with my head.

Fladdermus · 12/09/2022 19:08

The reason I spend too much time on Mumsnet is that usually it is one of the few social websites which isn't visually 'noisey' for me.

Rainallnight · 12/09/2022 19:13

It’s way OTT. Completely unnecessary.

littleducks · 12/09/2022 19:21

I don't like it. Agree if it was just the heater that would be fine and easy to ignore it's the navigation bar that's really difficult to use.

The timing is silly, last week would have made sense but four days later randomly? Maybe should have just five for the funeral day if so keen

Roselilly36 · 12/09/2022 19:32

I would agree, it’s unnecessary in my eyes, I agree a respectful message is appropriate, given the magnitude of the death of our Queen. So many businesses just seem to be jumping on the band wagon with the black banding, lead don’t follow. Not great for dyslexic people either.

DutchessOfMuck · 12/09/2022 19:37

Sorry mumsnet but it's causing me issues also. I have photo sensitivity and its making me feel sick. The white is jumping out all blurry.

Phrenologistsfinger · 12/09/2022 19:39

I hate it - it’s making my ADHD brain struggle to focus and is totally unnecessary!

EugeneLevysEyebrow · 12/09/2022 19:49

I hate it, it’s making everything really hard to read. And I normally don’t care about these kind of things - I had no strong opinions on the site update a few months back.

More importantly it’s unnecessary - a website doesn’t need or benefit from this performative mourning.

PurpleDaisies · 12/09/2022 21:13

This is the final straw. I’ve been hanging on through all the site changes and I’m finally done. Every thread is now harder to read because of the thick black bar across the bottom that’s been done with no thought for how the users will find it. No engagement with the feedback a about how it’s harder to read now.

Signing out for the last time.

I like it, all this enforced grieving is very North Korean-esq.

Hobnobswantshernameback · 12/09/2022 21:31

Tacky per formative band waggon jumping nonsense
mans yet again no care for how inaccessible this makes the site for people with visual difficulties

Neverendingdust · 12/09/2022 21:34

MN please ignore those who are moaning about this. It’s a great show of respect and I actually really like the black it actually makes it stand out better.

Yeah, people with disabilities should just shut up about things that make their life harder. Able bodied people are all that matters!

I'm also disabled and finding the site more difficult to use now.

Po95 · 12/09/2022 22:03

I don't see how changing a menu bar is a great show of respect at all. 🤷‍♀️

BartyPags · 12/09/2022 22:38

FFS, of course it isn’t ‘moany’ for posters to to complain if site changes are making them feel ill or too distracted to use the site properly.

This site is just a framework for the people who use it to provide MN with free content. MN is only ever as good as the people who are able or want to come here and post. It’s not in anyone’s interest to be making MN users feel ill or upset and cause them to not be able to use the site.

I’m a bit shocked that nobody on the MN team considered visual processing or user comfort from an inclusion before making this change.

Why not just change the colours back now, given all this feedback? And if MN wants to make some kind of an official acknowledgment you could have a banner at the top with a link to a new section about HMQ’s passing or something. Then MN could have a tribute area and after a while that could go into classics.
