Can I ask you all to check your inbox messages?

I have posted about this on the 'glitch thread' in Site Stuff, but I'm just curious to know if this is happening to anyone else (so far just me and one other poster).

When the site was hacked a few years back, I and many others deleted all inbox messages. MNHQ even gave us a handy little 'delete all' button in order to help.

I've just looked and every single deleted message (dating back to 2011 when I joined MN) has reappeared 😮

I mean it's not a big deal as there's nothing in them that could bring down Parliament, but has anyone else got the same thing?

Ignore the voting btw, should've turned it off.

worraliberty · 06/06/2022 14:11

PetronellaOsgood · 06/06/2022 14:21

Yes , I have messages from years back that I’d deleted.

TheChippendenSpook · 06/06/2022 14:36

Me too. I deleted them all and now they're all back.

Floorandflooringme · 06/06/2022 14:38

No messages here.

worraliberty · 06/06/2022 14:44

It just goes to show, nothing truly disappears from the internet.

@MNHQ

Yes all mine have been restored, including posts deleted by other users, which say they are deleted on the overview but when I click on the link they have been reinstated.

Also how do I delete them all again, this is really bad.

@knottyandpistey you need to look at your inbox

Thanks very much for bringing this to our attention, @worraliberty

We're looking into this and will be back with an update just as soon as we can.

We're also going to move this thread to our Site Stuff topic so we can keep it on our radar.

MyShrivelledGnarlyFinger · 06/06/2022 15:17

Messages from 10 years ago have reappeared how do I delete them? Also there is 1 private message alert but no message at all...??

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 06/06/2022 15:21

GenuineKlatchianPottery · 06/06/2022 15:24

Mine are still deleted. What does a red dot by the message mean?

KitKattaktik · 06/06/2022 16:08

worraliberty · 06/06/2022 14:11

@KitKattaktik had you previously deleted them?

Yes I had.

KatyMumsnet · 06/06/2022 16:44

Hi, we've been looking into this and there may be a bit of confusion here because PMs work very differently now, so it may seem like some have reappeared but actually were never deleted.

Rather than an 'inbox' style like an old email system where you only see one side of the communication, we've changed it to be 'conversation' style more like WhatsApp or smartphone text messages. So if you previously deleted one side of the conversation, then the other side may have still remained in the system because the user you were messaging didn't delete their side or vice versa.

To remove the whole conversation from your list you can select the conversation and then click the 3 dot menu in the top right of the screen and click 'clear chat' -that will remove it from your list of conversations but it won't delete all the content.

You can delete individual messages that you have sent in a conversation by clicking the 3 dots next to the individual message. You cannot delete someone else's message but you can report it if needed.

If you notice a message that you think should be deleted, please send the details of that message to [email protected] i.e which username sent it, whether it was you who posted or another user, and a snippet of the content so we can find it and investigate further.

Thanks!

KatyMumsnet · 06/06/2022 16:52

I missed one thing off of my previous post that may be adding to the confusion - if you had multiple back and forth conversations with one username over many different occasions then they will all appear now in the conversation thread rather than individual email style communications.

Any deleted messages will say 'This message has been removed/deleted at the user's request'.

My inbox was clean as a whistle after the site got hacked and I regularly deleted all my messages (not that there were many so it was easy).

Now when I look through the chat style messages, it's hit and miss as to what's been deleted and what's come back. Surely MNHQ don't expect us to go through 11 years worth of chats and delete them individually?

Please can we have a 'delete all' button?

OP posts:
Crockof · 06/06/2022 17:08

So when we delete our messages now it only deletes on our side of the conversation. In the past a user could delete their information from my message thread.

Crockof · 06/06/2022 17:12

Ignore above.

However I'd also like an option to clear all the messages in one go please.

EveryFlightBeginsWithAFall · 06/06/2022 17:12

Yup all back, even the ones in a previous name that I had mn delete all posting history

onepieceoflollipop · 06/06/2022 17:15

I’ve got messages 11 years old
I’m sure they disappeared previously after one of the security issues.
prior to this system we had ‘CAT’ messages - remember them?
Those have gone!

ENoeuf · 06/06/2022 17:19

I just went through and deleted all my messages and then cleared chat! Took forever to remove each individual message. But I saw ten years worth of random development of my kids - through illness, outings, name changes (me) and general chit chat about their interests. I don't really message with people anymore, was nice to see.
