Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

JustineMumsnet · 21/04/2022 14:44

Hi all,
As you probably know we re-plaftormed the site overnight on Tuesday (in order to move to a faster, more stable and secure site which would be easier to develop new features on). There are a number of issues and bugs as a result of the move that we are working through and we thought it would be a good idea to list them on a page which we can keep updated as we sort through the problems. You can find that page here.

Mumsnet is a very large, complicated and old site - we've been working on re-platforming for the best part of 3 years - so it's not a huge surprise there are some bugs but please be assured we are working our way through them will get to them all as soon as we possibly can. In the meantime I do apologise for any inconvenience and frustration - I know it's been a painful day and a half for some.

Thank you to all those who've fed back and are helping us solve the remaining issues - it's really much appreciated Flowers.

prh47bridge · 20/05/2022 14:00

@BotCrossHuns As far as I can see the difference in post counts is because the app counts the old way, giving the total number of posts on the thread, whilst the website counts replies and therefore doesn't include the OP. So, when someone starts a thread, the website will show it as 0 replies, but the app will show it as 1 post.

This difference is on the radar and we'll change the way the app records it. Thanks

BotCrossHuns · 20/05/2022 13:34

Re accessibility, how about actually reading the things people have complained about?!

We've said lots of times that it's too much scrolling, which is difficult, and makes it visually hard as well - it comes from the very narrow strip where the posts are, and over half the screen space blank.

And the miniature font for all the naviation text, as well as for the thread titles in the trending box and in the threads I'm on/watching. everywhere but the actual posts - the font is like size 8 or 10.

And the overlapping of the words and lines in the threads I'm on, especially if there are any lists (like in your post just before this) - that makes it totally unreadable, both with the mini font and the overlapping, and anyone with visual issues will find it extra hard.

We are certainly reading and have changed some things already in response to feedback and will continue to do so. Some issues are not universal however so we need to research them and find out in what instances they're occurring in order to be able to fix.

KatyMumsnet · 23/05/2022 14:45

Hi all,

Thanks for all your feedback - we are going through the new posts each day to investigate and log any new issues.

Some of the issues raised since Justine's last post are known issues that we are either currently fixing or planning to fix asap. Updates on known issues are here - https://www.mumsnet.com/articles/talk-updates

Here's a new update on some of the issues raised:

  • Search - we will release changes to search tomorrow that will include a better date filter. We’re also working on an advanced search that will allow you to search all posts in the same way as before
  • Images being too small - we're working on this at the moment and hope to release changes before the end of the week.
  • Notifications not taking you to the right place on thread - we need to do quite a bit of work on the notifications backend to get this sorted which is a pretty big job - so that will be a couple of weeks before it's sorted but is in progress
  • Black advert / rotate screen - we are working with our ad tech security partner to block this so hope to have a fix soon
  • Local talk not organised by date - we’re looking into this
  • Deleted threads not being labelled in threads I’m on - we’re working on a fix for this now along with the ability to remove threads from this list
  • Screen refreshing unexpectedly - this is an intermittent issue that is hard to track down and therefore hard to fix @Furries would you be open to doing a screen share call with us so we can investigate the issue?
  • @RosehipSyrupForDinner that is not expected behaviour - could you let me know what device (e.g. samsung s21) and browser (e.g. chrome) you are using so I can try to recreate the issue on my end?
Apologies if I haven't responded to your specific issue but I assure you we are taking all the feedback on board and logging all the issues that are raised.

KatyMumsnet · 27/05/2022 16:18

@DragonwithoutaDungeon would you be willing to do a screen share call with us so we can investigate the issue with your PMs? It should be working.

@NevermindNelson a fix for bookmarks is currently being developed so we will be able to release that soon.

On images - we’re changing the design to make the images larger, it’s also currently in progress

KatyMumsnet · 28/05/2022 09:50

@DragonwithoutaDungeon I mean that the majority of people are able to access PMs now so it’s not an issue that is happening to everyone. This means that issues like this are very hard to pin down because they are usually device/browser specific and to be able to fix the issue we need to recreate it on our own devices, but in this case we can’t. A screen share would involve setting up a call on zoom between you, me and a developer so you can share your screen and show us what’s happening and if we’re able to diagnose it in real time then we will be able to fix it. Apologies it’s not more straightforward!

@YetAnotherSpartacus we will fix that as part of the image update!

KatyMumsnet · 07/06/2022 15:49

Hi all, apologies for the delay in communication on this thread.

Here are some updates about the issues raised since our last update here.

Bookmarks are now working - if you bookmark a thread and go back to the main thread URL or the URL of the page with the bookmark then you will jump to the bookmark.

Images are now bigger - when you click in to view an image it should appear larger now

Older private messages are showing - there's an explanation of the issue on this thread - https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/site_stuff/4563712-can-i-ask-you-all-to-check-your-inbox-messages

Threads I'm on / watching not showing when there are updates - this is taking a bit longer than expected but we will release these changes soon

@Zonder we're currently working on a change to the local thread order. We are changing it to show by most recently updated by default, with the option to change it to closest to location

@WaitroseWoman there was no DDoS attack, the issue with site speed and error messages appearing was due to a bug that has now been fixed

@prh47bridge we are looking into the issue with intermittent error messages appearing and pages timing out and have made some changes to the back end of our system so we can identify the issues more easily

@DragonwithoutaDungeon are PMs still an issue for you? If so it might be worth emailing directly so we can pick up a more focused conversation. Please email [email protected]

@BotCrossHuns I can't recreate the issue you raised regarding the pages updating when you press the back button - can you let me know where this is happening in more detail so I can look into it? E.g. when I click from active to a thread and back again

@bare thanks for raising that issue with punctuation on the app we will investigate

@BoreOfWhabylon I'll look into that issue with @ mentions not bolding some times and try to work it out - if you can screen record it and send it to [email protected] that would be super helpful! No worries if not - I will try to track it down!

If I've missed anything sorry about that! There's a lot to cover here.

KatyMumsnet · 07/06/2022 16:41

@WaitroseWoman that's right there is nothing to worry about. The error messages were server errors due to a bug that caused the website to temporarily go down - it's now been fixed

KatyMumsnet · 09/06/2022 17:03

@BotCrossHuns the back button is taking me back to the same list of threads on all my device and browsers on the website and on the app when I click through from chat and back again. Can you let me know how you're accessing the site - i.e. mobile or desktop or app / which device/browser so I can try to recreate the problem?

Regarding the fonts - we have reviewed them and the sizes are all in line with website standards. Are there places in particular where you feel the font is too small, then we can take a look at that specifically?

The blank spaces on either side of the thread column are the same size as the old version of the website and are designed this way to accommodate ads - are there other areas of blank space that you are referring to?

@Thelnebriati those empty slots should contain sponsored threads, we've identified a problem in some screen widths so we will fix that. If all cookies have been rejected then that may be another reason why they do not appear.

@DragonwithoutaDungeon glad to hear you have access now! We are looking into the issue with 'ghost' notifications so when we have a fix I will update you. I can also see the issue with the bottom of the inbox being cut off on shorter screens so I will raise that with our developers. Thanks for flagging!

@ThisIsGroundControl really great to hear you're finding some of the changes useful!

@Polgara2 2 this issue was fixed in the latest update so if you update your app to the latest version hopefully that will be resolved for you

KatyMumsnet · 09/06/2022 17:07

@BoreOfWhabylon I managed to recreate the issue with @ mentions not showing in bold so will add that to the list to investigate further. No need for a video or anything though because I've got one.

KatyMumsnet · 21/06/2022 19:32

Hi all, apologies it's been a while since we updated on this thread. We appreciate it's frustrating that things aren't working as expected and we're working as fast as we can to resolve all the problems.

Here are some responses to the issues raised since our last update:

@TheThreadisMildlyAmusing We're not reinstating the refresh button as it was because it was just a browser refresh that can be achieved using the browser function. We are working on a replacement for it that will show you when new posts have been added to the thread while you've been reading it and will allow you to load them in with a button click.

@prettybird There are intermittent issues regarding PMs that we're finding hard to pin down but we're trying to figure out what's happening. If you are willing to do some 121 testing with us then that would be really helpful? If you are interested then please let me know and we can arrange it.

@Seeingadistance @AnneKipankitoo @Bosky We released some changes to the image viewer that we think have improved it but we will review it again as we're still getting a lot of feedback about image sizes.

@debwong When you say notifications aren't working what exactly isn't working for you? We know that some notifications aren't taking users to the right place on the thread and we're waiting on a fix to be released for that. If it's something else then let us know.

@prh47bridge Thank you for the great explanation about the impact of the text size and layout changes! In regards to the 5 blank lines you are seeing - they are sponsored threads that are pulled in via a 3rd party. If you're using an ad blocker then they will not appear but we are getting reports that users without ad blockers are still seeing blank slots and we're currently looking into why.

@kitchens4ever We can't change the width of the column because of our ad setup unfortunately, but we have reduced the number of ad slots on threads to reduce some scrolling. We want the website to be accessible so we will discuss this further and see what other changes we can make without reducing the font size or making it less accessible for other users.

@Zonder The changes to local are waiting to be tested and we will release them as soon as we can. Apologies for the delay on this!

@BotCrossHuns We've reviewed the smaller fonts on the threads I'm on page and will release changes soon. The changes will also fix the overlapping text. I've also raised the issue with the navigation links being small so will update on that soon.

@ExtremelyDedicated @DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat We're currently looking at the issue with pages refreshing unexpectedly and hope to have a fix soon.

@DentonsFringeArnottsWaistcoat when a thread is deleted a message should be left behind in threads I'm on so we will add this to the list to be fixed.

I hope I covered everything - please follow up if not!

KatyMumsnet · 27/06/2022 17:25

Hi, just a quick update on a couple of the issues on this thread:

@BoreOfWhabylon the issue with @ mentions not appearing bold is now fixed.

@Zonder the local results are now ordered by newest first and you can use the drop down to change it to closest first if you want to.

A few people raised issues with PM notifications showing when there are no messages to read - we think we've fixed this so please check and let us know if you're still seeing notifications with no corresponding messages. @DragonwithoutaDungeon fyi!

@Memyselfandfood We're currently trying to figure out why pages are crashing and we're making some progress in the background but as it's an intermittent issue it's hard for us to pin down the exact cause.

@ExtremelyDedicated @Furries can I check that the behaviour you're expecting is that you click through from a watched thread notification or from threads I'm on/watching and you land on the last post you saw? If so, we are working on a fix for this!

@Bosky we will take a look at that issue with the lists - thanks for flagging!

As always, apologies if I missed anything and please do follow up if so. We are working through all the issues so please bear with us!

LilyMumsnet · 27/06/2022 19:18

BotCrossHuns · 27/06/2022 18:46

Nothing has changed yet regarding the mini font for all the navigation, thread lists in trending, threads I'm on etc

Also in threads I'm on, anything in lists still ends up all overlapping with lines on top of each other

Hello

We're still working on the changes to threads I'm on. The font size and overlapping lines will be fixed as part of that update! It's taking longer than expected because we're also changing it to show how many updates the user has since they last saw the thread.

We don't have plans to change the navigation font just yet but it is on our list to discuss - we're working through some bigger issues right now but we're taking the feedback on and will update when we have more information on that!

LilyMumsnet · 28/06/2022 15:55

@DragonwithoutaDungeon We're in the process of making the search function better - results will be relevant and more like the site prior to transformation. It's a big job but do bear with us - it's very high on the list!

@Justthisonceharold What device and browser are you using? I'm on chrome via laptop and the edit button works for me. We'll try and replicate once we have more information! Flowers

@JaggedLittleKrill We're really sorry about this! Can we ask for a link to the thread you were on and can you let us know what device and browser you're using to access the site? In the meantime, we'll still be looking into it to see if we can replicate.

Hi @JaggedLittleKrill we had an issue with our servers this morning but it was resolved right away. You shouldn't see that error/black box going forward.

LilyMumsnet · 29/06/2022 15:43

JaggedLittleKrill · 29/06/2022 06:08

I covered this in my post but appreciate you'll have a lot to keep track of.

This thread.

Samsung internet on an Android galaxy phone.

Happens every few days.

Yes sorry - a lot going on!

This was an issue with our server. If it does happen again (it shouldn't) then it will be resolved very quickly. Flowers

LilyMumsnet · 29/06/2022 21:30

Justthisonceharold · 29/06/2022 21:25

I'm on an S10 using Chrome. I can edit, but not when looking at the preview, unlike previously.

Ah okay - it's the edit button now that takes you back to the post to edit it. We know, it's a lot of changes! We'll probably be keeping this as it is for the moment.

LilyMumsnet · 30/06/2022 16:53

Hello, everyone.

We think we've answered most of the questions about the data breach now. If there is anything else we've missed, do let us know.

With regards to the questions about users occasionally receiving emails to old addresses, as we've said, this definitely shouldn't be the case. When you deregister your account, your email address is automatically deleted. The same happens when you change your email address; the old one disappears for good.

If that's not the case for you, please email us at [email protected] and we'll look into it for you.

On the information that's in the email users get when we reply to a report - we are currently reviewing the report forms to check that there is nothing unnecessary in there.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 01/07/2022 17:30

Hi - sorry - we never intend to come across as patronising and we really regret that it sounds that way. We're keen to figure out why some users are receiving emails to old addresses, as @LilyMumsnet said, this should not be happening based on how our system is set up. If you have concerns, please get in touch at the usual address: [email protected] with info on what you're receiving. We'll be able to give you a clear answer from there.

It's also still the case that we're more than happy to manually remove any email from our lists - so please do let us know if that's the case for you.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 02/07/2022 16:04

DragonwithoutaDungeon · 01/07/2022 18:09

Did you mean that to be amusing, coz you've just pretty much rinse repeated what was said above Hmm

It is happenening... but why?!

Can someone answer my questions please rather than repeating this silly stock response?

Why is that happening?
Isn't that supposed to be impossible?
What are MNHQ doing about this (holding info users have requested you remove) - do you need to report yourself again?

How did the recent data breach occur? I haven't seen a satisfactory explanation yet but I may have missed it. I know roughly how it occurred but according to the PP's who know about this stuff, it shouldn't have happened and it's worrying that it did.

What are you doing to properly protect your users and their information please MN? For all I know you've got another dodgy Intern, collecting info about folk - we know it's happened before... how about some reassurance?

Hi @DragonwithoutaDungeon - no, I'm definitely not trying to be amusing & I'm sorry that you thought I was.

We won't know why someone is receiving a mail unless we know what they're seeing and where it's being sent to. We're happy to discuss this with anyone who thinks this is happening to them as right now, we can't say why it is with any certainty without more info from individual MNers. You're right - it isn't supposed to happen - but again - we really need people get in touch with us. Obviously, we want to sort this out and clear up confusion.

Wrt the data breach - we had a temporary glitch with 'Report this post' for a short time, which meant the email of the person reported was included in the report and in a few cases in responses to those reports. We informed our Data Protection Officer and reported ourselves to the ICO.

We emailed the (around 20) affected users overnight offering to delete their posts, a retrospective name change or to change their email address.

The problem was caused by human error our end - our proper processes weren't followed - this is explained in greater detail by Justine on this thread.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 02/07/2022 16:15

LunaLights · 02/07/2022 14:17

Am I going mad, or has the font used on the site just changed? I returned to a thread after a few minutes on another web page, and the look of the text is completely different - I’m squinting and getting a very bad headache! I’ve checked other boards/threads and it all seems to be changed to a different font. Maybe I just need sleep or to get off Mumsnet…

Hey @LunaLights would you mind sharing a screenshot? The font looks the same to me.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 02/07/2022 16:17

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 01/07/2022 20:52

This is a very long thread now so this may have been mentioned, but when I added a picture on the old system (on my Android laptop, Chrome browser) I could drag and drop into the Add your message here box. Now I can't.

Hey @Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g are you able to add the image by clicking the plus sign underneath the text box?

Mumsnet Talk re-platforming - Known issues update

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 02/07/2022 17:41

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g the same thing is happening when I try it too - sorry, it looks like the drag and drop doesn't work now. Hope it's not too much of a pain.

LilyMumsnet · 07/07/2022 13:07

debwong · 03/07/2022 23:21

@KatyMumsnet When you say notifications aren't working what exactly isn't working for you? We know that some notifications aren't taking users to the right place on the thread and we're waiting on a fix to be released for that. If it's something else then let us know.

For instance, this thread. Notifications tell me there are 51 new messages on this (8-page) thread. I click the notification. It takes me to post 1, page 1. Every time. I then have to go to page 8 and count 51 messages backwards to find where I was.

This is a known issue and we will be releasing a fix for it as soon as possible!

@AnneKipankitoo please could you let us know what device and browser you're using, and if you receive any error messages, can we have a screenshot? We'd really like to get this sorted for you.

LilyMumsnet · 07/07/2022 13:22

AnneKipankitoo · 07/07/2022 13:19

I do not have any screenshots.
I am on Apple iPhone 13 , Safari.

Next time it happens, can you get us one so that we can try and find out what's going on here? Flowers
