Dark mode

Just thought I’d ask if mumsnet have added a dark mode to the new site format?. I can’t see any obvious settings to change it but I might be missing it hiding somewhere?. It’s something I’d really appreciate and I’m sure I’ve seen it mentioned here before. Nearly all other apps and site I use have the option now, it’s a shame we don’t have it on here. I actually find myself not coming on here at night when I’d probably read the most because it’s so bright even with my screen brightness down!.

No answer but wanted to lend my voice to this - I'd find this really useful!

SamphirethePogoingStickerist · 20/04/2022 16:19

I've just found a Force Dark Mode hack. Not sure it is much better, but it is easy to put on and off again

I am in chrome but you should be able to find similar for others

chrome://flags/#enable-force-dark

Now looking at a black screen with white lines an text, some purples and blues

I found this thread from searching how tkk ok put mums et into dark mode

EstherMumsnet · 20/04/2022 22:18

Thanks for this - we'll pass it on to the tech team

Hoppyhops · 24/04/2022 22:45

Also lending my voice to this. I would love dark mode. Please mumsnet! I struggle to stay on here at night to read as the bright screen triggers a migraine so it would be such a welcome feature.

SpringIsSprung1 · 24/04/2022 22:47

Just use your dark mode on your phone. That's what I do so I don't disturb the dog😁

plinkplinkfizzer · 24/04/2022 23:04

Thanks for that, I have added that , not sure if I like it . Might have a muck about with various tools from chrome and get it to my liking .😀

Ok after fiddling with chrome MN site it black and shades of grey which I quite like .👍🏻

I have dark mode on permanently but it doesn’t change mumsnet 🤷‍♀️. I know I can invert colours in setting or something but a simple dark mode option would be easier.

I have my brightness down as low as it can get, I have dark mode on permanently and yet my eyeballs are being burned by this site. Its headache inducing. Please get it sorted soon. I thought technology was supposed to enhance our lives.

FuglyBitch · 19/09/2022 09:52

Is this available at all?

Hoppyhops · 19/09/2022 17:34

I don’t think so but I’ve downloaded the browser ‘Brave’, set it on dark mode and it works for mumsnet! Saves my eyes in the nights.

ComeOnThenFanny · 19/09/2022 17:38

The hack from @SamphirethePogoingStickerist really works! I didn't think anything would, since I have dark mode on everything and it's never worked on MN. It does now! Thanks so much!

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 20/09/2022 14:16

Hi all - we're happy to say that dark mode is in the final stages of testing and we hope it will go live next week. We'll update everyone with more details soon.

Pixiedust1234 · 20/09/2022 22:30

Awesome!! Grin

NermanaMumsnet · 22/09/2022 15:57

Hi 🙂
We just launched a dark mode view.

If you would like to try it, please go to Settings > Display, and there you will see 3 options:
-Default view - shows light or dark mode depending on your device settings
-Light view - shows the current view
-Dark view - shows the dark colour variant

The settings change will only affect the device you use to make the change. We’d love to hear what you think of it. 😊

Pixiedust1234 · 22/09/2022 20:40

Wow thank you. My first thought was "ooooohhh spooky!" So next question is this. Can the banner be orange instead of blue for Halloween? 👻

I can now scroll without waking my baby with the bright screen light! Thank you. So much easier on the eyes too.

CamillasToe · 22/09/2022 22:57

Does it work on the app too?

Noseq · 22/09/2022 23:11

The settings change will only affect the device you use to make the change.

Is it cookie based, then? It would be great to apply the setting permanently / across all devices.

I don't think it does Sad

There is no 'display' option in Settings on the app.

NermanaMumsnet · 23/09/2022 16:10

Thanks so much everyone for your feedback! We’re really happy that you’re finding dark mode helpful. Thanks @Ferntastical for responding on the app. Dark mode isn’t available in the apps yet, but we’re going to look into adding it in future!
If anybody has any other thoughts or feedback, just let us know 😊

Just tried this on iPhone in safari but when clicking “save changes” the selection just switches back to light mode.

Oh that's odd - can we check that your browser is up to date?

Dorothyparker010 · 08/10/2022 01:22

@LilyMumsnet just checked and yes up to date.
