ADHD/ASD board

Lots of threads about the above in adults recently.

As it’s underdiagnosed in women, and women with these conditions are largely ignored, can we have a board to talk to each other on please?

OP posts:
CatRamsey · 06/01/2022 11:47

I agree there needs be a board for this.

I feel quite uncomfortable about the fact the MN with SN board is hidden from active. I only ever view active and had no idea this section existed, and there's a lot of posts on there I may have benefited from reading.

Saying that, if I had seen the board name, I probably wouldn't have clicked on it anyway as I don't consider myself to have special needs (Suspected ADD/ADHD), I'm just not neurotypical. So I agree that either a new board needs to be made, or the current one should be renamed and unhidden.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 06/01/2022 12:42

The rather disgusting thread on Relationships that MNHQ are allowing to stand.

AlexaShutUp · 06/01/2022 12:50

Yes please, I would welcome a board.

I started a thread on here back in 2018, asking if I might have adhd. I finally made myself call the GP this morning to get the assessment process started. Cried my eyes out on the phone and haven't stopped crying since.

I need to find a way of managing this better because it's making me miserable.

MangoBiscuit · 06/01/2022 12:54

Yes please from me too.

SingToTheSky · 06/01/2022 14:39

@AlexaShutUp well done! That’s a huge step. 💐

Thank you @SingToTheSky. It has taken me years to work up to it.

A diagnosis would mean a lot at this point. Firstly, perhaps I might finally stop berating myself for all of my perceived inadequacies. And secondly, the idea that there might be medication that could help is an amazing thought. I'm still feeling very tearful right now, though. I'm at breaking point and I can't live with it any longer.

Gufo · 06/01/2022 15:04

Yes please [suspected ASD me and DH, diagnosed ASD DC1].

Iveputmyselfonthenaughtystep · 06/01/2022 15:06

@LoganRoy

Yes please. As a suspected ADHDer I watch the threads, meaning to come back to them and lose track of them Blush so it would be good to have them all in one place.
Hahaha. So much this!
GreebosCrustiesAndGoths · 06/01/2022 15:30

I think the whole area needs an overhaul to be honest!

MNers requested the SN threads were out of active and "opt in" because people kept missing the SN aspect (especially for DC) and were being judgy twats. If the majority feel they shouldn't be opt out anymore though, I guess MNHQ would make a change? I do think SN is quite outdated now as a term and neurodiverse is better. (SEN for DC is still relevant as a stand alone topic I think) Would people want ASD as a separate topic but within ND? Or just put ASD threads in the ND section?

It's also tricky I think as there are people who have a disability, but aren't ND - I guess the best place then would be MN with disabilities? A lot of it comes down to the social v medical models and terminology though, and I think (at the moment) it's a circle that can't be squared as some people with some conditions/diagnoses (for want of a better and less controversial term!) prefer to say they are ND, some people prefer to say they have a disability.

For example, I have epilepsy which is definitely a disability, although I usually post in Health for problems related to seizures etc. But the cause of my epilepsy means I am also ND with associated issues for example concentration/memory/word finding etc (a lot of overlap with ADHD) For problems related to that I would probably post in ND or ADHD topic.

I also think we have to accept a majority view prevails and not all of us are going to agree with MNHQ decisions in light of that.

theaccidentaleconomist · 06/01/2022 15:41

I would also love to see autism and ADHD.boards or at least change the name of Mumsnetters with SN to something else.

HypocrisyHere · 07/01/2022 08:43

Just adding my support for this too. Our own section would be very welcome.

BertieBotts · 07/01/2022 08:54

Yes, I completely understand and support the original reason that the child SN threads were made opt in. I just find it strange that the adult SN threads didn't work the same way.

But I also agree that since MN is bigger than it was it might not quite work the same way any more. It used to be that if someone posted about their child and it seemed useful that they might like to look at the SN section they would be gently pointed there, and so there was kind of general knowledge that they existed while allowing them to be a little bit private. I'm not sure that works or happens any more. Add to that that you can't use the customise option on a phone, and a large percentage of users are now on a phone, the whole opt in/out of topics is even more difficult to implement.

SingToTheSky · 07/01/2022 11:23

For me personally the best option would be one board for autism and ADHD. As there is so much overlap and many people have both. But obviously people may prefer separate ones!

AshGirl · 07/01/2022 17:49

Would be really great to see this PE forwards. I think that ASD and ADHD referrals for assessment are on the rise in adults and it would be a really useful resource for a lot of MNers.

My preference is one board for 'neurodivergent adults' as this would cover ASD, ADHD and a variety of other conditions. Many people have dual diagnoses eg ADHD plus CPTSD and there are manat strategies and coping mechanisms that would be helpful to people with a diagnosis of ADHD and/or ASD.

Stroopwaffle5000 · 07/01/2022 17:53

And adult ADHD board would be great! I've totally failed at adulting today due to my ADHD 🤣

Medicaltextbook · 07/01/2022 18:04

This would be good. There have also been requests for a disability section in the past. I’ve been on at least one thread in site stuff. ND or ASD would help me, but I also have physical issues cerebral palsy and poor sight that can get lost in the MNetters with SN.
As far as I know nothing came from previous requests.

Queenfreak · 07/01/2022 18:04

I would definitely benefit from a neurodivergent board, I also don't see why it would be opt in.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 07/01/2022 19:14

What does opt in mean?

Yes, good idea. HQ don’t seem keen, though.

AshGirl · 08/01/2022 08:05

@BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation

What does opt in mean?
'Opt in' means that threads wouldn't appear on your 'active' list unless you choose to opt in to see them. It effectively hides the board and all its threads from most MN users.
Medicaltextbook · 08/01/2022 14:50

Can someone tell me how to opt in for SEN. Now I go through the main Talk page but it would be good if it was in active.

BertieBotts · 08/01/2022 16:20

It's under Customise but you have to be on the desktop site.

I've started a support thread up in Mumsnetters with SN seeing as we're having to doss there for however long.

IncompleteSenten · 09/01/2022 14:03

Yes please.
A neurodiverse board where we can start all manner of threads on different issues and feel that we're talking to people who understand

ofwarren · 09/01/2022 14:09

I also would like a board for those of us with ASD
