ADHD/ASD board

Lots of threads about the above in adults recently.

As it’s underdiagnosed in women, and women with these conditions are largely ignored, can we have a board to talk to each other on please?

OP posts:
Justilou1 · 08/09/2021 01:28

Would be a great idea to have this board. Mums with ADHD find family life really hard. High marriage breakup, etc.

bowchickawowwoww · 08/09/2021 02:14

I'd definitely be interested Smile

severelysound · 08/09/2021 05:11

But that would be the sort of thing it might be interesting to discuss on the board, whatever it ends up being called.

I totally agree with you and would always be up for discussing it more if / when we have a board to do it on.

I was just (hopefully) putting across the point that there are people who are diagnosed but who don't 'identify with' that model / label, in the same way a lot of MNs on the thread have said they don't identify with the label 'MNs with special needs'.

So wether it's two separate boards for ADHD / ASD or a single board for both, if they are actually called what they are, then everyone identifies with it regardless of social / medical models (or combinations of either)? And regardless of how they personally view it?

That was my logic anyway. Smile

Clearly a lot of people do identify with the ND type labels and that's absolutely fine. I'm definitely not saying that's wrong. Just that the labels are not interchangeable with the conditions or a catch-all term for ASD + dyslexia + dyspraxia + Tourettes + schizophrenia + ADHD + OCD + APD + any other neurological condition (or a pick and mix of a few of them).

It is a specific thing with a specific meaning. And people with each of those conditions or illnesses or disorders (or divergencies?) will probably view that meaning and model differently, and thus identify with that model to various degrees?

I would love a board. I need to be able to see others stories and not feel so alone in how my brain works. Currently trying to find threads is difficult

Notlostjustexploring · 08/09/2021 17:45

A separate board would definitely be good, and allow those, diagnosed and undiagnosed, a chance of finding it!!

I'd definitely quite like one.

atalossaboutwhattodo · 11/09/2021 11:56

Has MN HQ decided yet? When will we hear?

theturtleshead · 25/09/2021 10:20

Has MN HQ made a decision yet? There are more and more posters on MN discussing ADHD so a dedicated section is really needed.
Waiting with baited breath...

@soniamumsnet

Hi - just dropping in to say thanks for all these ideas which we'll pass on. Flowers
Any news?
FlissMumsnet · 25/09/2021 20:43

Hi theturtleshead,

We'll be flagging this up to bosses right away - we hope they'll be an answer for you soon.

Was this ever actioned?

It would be a useful board to have.

Please, any information on this?

Thoosa · 05/01/2022 22:29

Oh good spot!

Maybe this is exactly what’s needed.

bicyclesaredeathtraps · 05/01/2022 22:33

Personally I don't like the board title Mumsnetters with SN, we're disabled, just say disabled. Special needs is annoying and euphemistic, besides being used as a playground insult for a lot of us.

beautifullymad · 05/01/2022 22:52

@Adirondack

Think it would be good to have two separate boards, one ADHD and one ASD. Although often comorbid, they are separate and very different conditions.
Yes please.
TeaandHobnobs · 05/01/2022 23:01

Would very much like a “neurodiversity” board.
I struggle - since the recent reshuffle of the SN section - with keeping track of ADHD/ASD related conversations relevant to children / education, and also relating to adults.
It would be great to
Have a dedicated section to cover both the challenges for neurodiverse children and adults, but also to promote understanding (not enough people understand Neurodiversity, IMO)

@FlissMumsnet maybe there is an opportunity for a webchat with one of the many fantastic experts / supporters out there? Prof Amanda Kirby, Jessica McCabe from “How to ADHD” or someone from the ADHD Foundation?

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 05/01/2022 23:04

The SN section has low traffic. Perhaps the name of the board is the problem.

YouCantTourniquetTheTaint · 06/01/2022 09:21

Yeah I wouldn't post on the SN board, as I have ADHD, and SN just doesn't feel right.

A Neurodiversity board however, I'd post on that. I'm a part of a few groups on FB for women with ADHD, and get so much support, and help on there from other women with ADHD, they "get it" IYSWIM.

Either a neurodiversity board or separate ADHD and autism boards, as yeah, they're both neurodiversities, but they are separate and different.

mrsrat · 06/01/2022 09:32

Just got diagnosed at 58 changed my life

BertieBotts · 06/01/2022 09:35

Nobody can find it because it's automatically hidden from Active and you can't opt in to see it like you can with the other SN boards.

It's weird and I don't get why we are in our own little hidden purgatory.

BitcherOfBlakiven · 06/01/2022 09:38

I’m the OP and given recent events on MN, I strongly believe an ND board is needed now more than ever.

BarrowInFurnessRailwayStation · 06/01/2022 10:11

Totally.

I wonder if MNHQ are reading this thread 🤔

AutistAwayWithUrConditionalLuv · 06/01/2022 10:13

I agree with a Neurodiversity board or a separate ASC and ADHD board.

A little tip: One person can't be "neurodiverse". I see people say "I'm neurodiverse/He's neurodiverse" a lot. A group of people with different neuro-conditons are neurodiverse.

itwasntaparty · 06/01/2022 10:30

I'm recently diagnosed and this would be very useful

vivariumvivariumsvivaria · 06/01/2022 10:38

What recent events, Bitcher?

I'd use an ADHD board.

Diagnosed at 50. Bloody delighted about that, too, the meds are brilliant.

KimMumsnet · 06/01/2022 10:42

Morning, all.

Thanks for flagging this thread back up - and apologies we haven't come back to you with anything conclusive as yet.

Just to let you know: this is on the agenda for discussion, and we'll let you know what's happening ASAP.
Thanks for bearing with.

SingToTheSky · 06/01/2022 11:04

Yes please 😀💜
