Seeing a hidden section

FelicityBeedle · 21/06/2021 17:29

I’m seeing a section I definitely have hidden occasionally in active, just now there are two threads from it visible. Is it just me?

But based on all of this, Mumsnet should surely have a separate AstraZeneca section after all the scaremongering/threads on AZ on the corona board? 😂

Zeev · 21/06/2021 22:17

@Quaggars

Free speech? Do you mean to be able to talk without talk guidelines in place as I'd have thought they'd still stand whichever board they're on.
I would be fine with sitewide guidelines instead of ones tailored just to curtail the speech in one small corner of the site.
ArabellaScott · 21/06/2021 22:19

I completely agree, Strawberry. It's clunky as anything to have to keep going back to 'Talk' to scroll to find the new board. Daft.

MsFogi · 21/06/2021 22:19

FFS MN - every time I come on MN today I dislike it a bit more. How to alienate a large portion of your posters/readership in one easy step. And all for what, so people can hide two boards rather than one. I only come on here for the Feminist chat (as it was before being split) and occasionally the S&B board - somehow I can manage to scroll through all the mum stuff on the Active boards! (And before anyone bleats about it being a site for mums clearly it is not centred around women or we wold be able to talk about sex as a biological fact etc etc and I first joined in 2005 when I was interested in the mum stuff!).

Mrgrinch · 21/06/2021 22:21

Which board has been split and what's it been split into?

@Mrgrinch

Just what I was going to say. All this skirting around the topic! It's like Gina Ford all over again.

Quaggars · 21/06/2021 22:25

@Mrgrinch

The feminism board has been separated into two different topics, whereas as there was around half a dozen topics under the feminism board before, it's been streamlined into two. One to talk about sex based rights and trans issues, and the other for general feminism chat and other feminism topics away from the trans debate.
Mrgrinch · 21/06/2021 22:27

Thanks for clarifying that, although I'm still confused. I don't really post there anyway so probably won't affect me. For a start I have no idea what the hundreds of abbreviations stand for, and I can never keep up with the threads because they move so quickly.

CardinalLolzy · 21/06/2021 22:29

Skirts?
Think your post belongs in Sex & Gender Grin

Quaggars · 21/06/2021 22:31

Oh for goodness sake lol

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 21/06/2021 22:32

Same and I can't remember how to hide boards.

CardinalLolzy · 21/06/2021 22:42

Go to 'talk' and the little dropdown arrow next to it (probably need to be on a desktop/browser).
'Customise'
Scroll to bottom - there's a button under "Ignore topics in Active Conversations"

There, never let it be said feminists can't be useful sometimes.

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 21/06/2021 23:03

Thank you. Isn't it a bit weird that mumsnet have assumed that everyone who has hidden feminism chat did so because of the "trans stuff". Maybe I just hate women?

CardinalLolzy · 21/06/2021 23:04

Yes, that was brought up on the relevant thread....!

@Mrgrinch

The Feminisms board have now been split into two boards.

One called Feminist Chat where you're not allowed to talk about anything that requires any feminist analysis of sex/gender, because men get upset.

And one called Sex And Gender where you are allowed to talk about sex and gender, but you're compelled to call things the opposite of what they are, or contort yourself into a linguistic arabesque to avoid being forced to lie, in case a man gets upset. Otherwise you get banned.

You see, lots of people who don't visit or use the Feminism boards asked for the Feminism boards to change so that the feminists wouldn't go there. The users of the board said they didn't want this change, but sadly the voices of the non-users was more important (as is so often the case with women, must be the frequency of our voices, no wonder the best women are male).

JackieCollinshasnoauthority · 21/06/2021 23:21

My sarcastic point was that as long as I've been on this site people have wanted feminists hidden in a corner. This board splitting is the latest manifestation of that. Mumsnet's assumption that people won't want to hide feminism chat now the "nasty transphobia" has gone completely misses the mark.

FelicityBeedle · 21/06/2021 23:23

@PearPickingPorky
Plenty of women, Cis or otherwise get upset at what’s said on the feminism board because it’s often backwards and offensive

OP posts:
Waitwhat23 · 21/06/2021 23:26

And plenty of women object to the term 'cis' because it's backwards and offensive.

CardinalLolzy · 21/06/2021 23:27

That's true, but since I've learnt to ignore the goady misogynists it's not so upsetting.

CardinalLolzy · 21/06/2021 23:28

wait I'm assuming OP knows that full well, which is why that word was chosen. I suppose the rules about it don't necessarily apply to this board though.

Waitwhat23 · 21/06/2021 23:30

@CardinalLolzy I agree, it's only ever used on here in a goady way. Just highlighting the hypocrisy.

ichundich · 21/06/2021 23:30

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

Why have they suddenly been unhidden from Active Threads? I get that a lot of sections have been changed (though most have had to see their fav sections reduced in size, this one seems to have grown) but why would those who have it hidden suddenly want to see it again? Unilateral decision for us?
I'm wondering the same. Especially annoying because the only way to hide a topic is in the desktop version rather than via the app.
MaudTheInvincible · 21/06/2021 23:36

IMO FWR makes some feel uncomfortable with the choices and allowances they've made or are making, and challenges their comfortable blind spots. They're happier doing ostrich impressions.

It's not that anything's been unhidden, it's that there are now two new sections which you have not yet hidden. I don't know what you mean by 'this one seems to have grown' - the FWR topics have gone from, what, five or so, down to two.
