Palestine and Israel threads constantly removed

Hi,

As a person of Palestinian heritage, I find the fact mumsnet keeps deleting threads that shed light on the suffering of Palestinians to be deeply offensive.

I would like to know mumsnet policy on this issue.

OP posts:
DioneTheDiabolist · 11/05/2021 14:02

Yet another thread taken down because apparently the OP was goady.Hmm I call bullshit @MNHQ.Angry The OP wasn't "goady", the responses were not antisemitic, so why pull the thread?

FromHereToModernity · 11/05/2021 14:04

Are we allowed to cite the United Nations resolutions on the occupation of Palestinian territories?

ohfourfoxache · 11/05/2021 14:06

Sorry HQ but I agree....the OP wasn’t goady AT ALL

Pretty poor show deleting the thread tbh

KaptainKaveman · 11/05/2021 14:07

@FromHereToModernity

Are we allowed to cite the United Nations resolutions on the occupation of Palestinian territories?
Good idea.
Serpenta · 11/05/2021 14:07

It's sinister, the deletion of these threads.

Gooseysgirl · 11/05/2021 14:08

Completely agree, bloody ridiculous behaviour from HQ

KaptainKaveman · 11/05/2021 14:09

There appears to be a group of extremist far right nationalists who deliberately sabotage these threads. As long as they keep posting the threads will end up being deleted. There were some very thoughtful comments on the thread.

sergeilavrov · 11/05/2021 14:10

I reported several comments on that thread for clear xenophobia and anti-semitism: it was there and not in small quantities. I wish MN would just ban those posters and have a zero tolerance policy for anti-semitism, which would allow people who have reasonable viewpoints to converse and debate. However, I am very appreciative of the work that people at MN do, and can see it’s often easier to get rid of threads populated by mass racism. It’s a tough job!

Lonelycrab · 11/05/2021 14:10

The first thread had no anti Semitic posts, plenty saying they disagreed with the actions of the Israeli govt.

The second thread had one AS post a few minutes before the thread was zapped.

It’s a shame that this can’t be discussed, to many this is an important issue. The reality is that any criticism of Israel whatsoever is reported as AS by some of the posters here, and I’m disappointed that MNHQ have acted in this way.

LarsErickssong · 11/05/2021 14:11

Completely agree the posters saying Palestinians use their own children as human shields were the goady ones...

Faffandahalf · 11/05/2021 14:11

I’ve just started an OP too on this.
I was on that thread. Only one person claimed anti semitism. The most goady thing was the disgusting dehumanising of Palestinians as a sub species that murders their own children.
There was consensus on the horrific actions of Israel and yet it still gets taken down.
What’s your agenda MN?

Faffandahalf · 11/05/2021 14:12

It is a complete lie that there were several antisemitic posts on the second thread. That is a lie. Posts were critical of Israel. That’s not antisemitic

CounsellorTroi · 11/05/2021 14:13

Agree with you OP.

HannaHat · 11/05/2021 14:14

I agree it’s sinister, “goady OP”? Nonsense Angry

HannaHat · 11/05/2021 14:14

There weren’t any on the first thread this morning Faffandahalf.

I reported a different thread on a different subject and got a response saying "being goady" isn't against the rules, so it depends on what pov MN wants to promote i guess 🤷‍♀️

Firstbornunicorn · 11/05/2021 14:28

I was wondering why there were no posts about this on here! Makes sense now.

Faffandahalf · 11/05/2021 14:33

Come on
MN. Waiting for your response.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 11/05/2021 14:36

Hello @DeepThinkingGirl thanks for posting. We've had to remove recent threads because several posts were offensive to both Palestinians and Jewish people, and it was difficult to see how such a discussion could recover. We also had many reports from people from both sides who were very upset by some of the posts.

Of course, we've no issue with posts that are critical of governments but we ask that people are mindful of the sensitivities when discussing this. Our job here is to moderate the posts on Mumsnet without fear or favour. We respond to reports and check each post against our guidelines.

Thank you.

Faffandahalf · 11/05/2021 14:38

But that’s not what your deletion message said for the second thread.
You said it was a ‘goady OP’
In what way was it goady? It was asking a legitimate question.

Faffandahalf · 11/05/2021 14:40

What ‘sensitivities’ should people be mindful of?
Please elaborate.
What aspects of Israel are we allowed to criticise? What is off limits?
What is considered anti Semitic?
Can one say they believe Israel to be an occupying brutal regime committing ethnic cleansing? What part of that breaks a talk guideline

DioneTheDiabolist · 11/05/2021 14:51

DeepThinkingGirl · 11/05/2021 15:15

Thanks YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet for your response.

I did not find the thread asking for reading material on the topic to be at all goady. I understand the topic is a sensitive one. But I believe there needs to be a balance between wanting to avoid controversy on one hand, and actually not shutting down debate.

I understand the motive is well intentioned, but if mumsnet could develop a clear policy on the issue then perhaps we can all make sure it’s upheld and steer clear from those that are being provocative.

I think mumsnet could’ve sent a warning message instead of just simply deleting.

I would kindly ask for the thread about reading material to be reinstated because there was only one poster who was being goady and they can have their post deleted. While the rest of us can benefit from the thread.

As someone who is of Palestinian heritage, my grandad was part of the 1948 evictions, I’m happy to put aside my point of views on the political side of the debate.. and abide by rules to maintain harmony on this platform.

But I’m not happy for voices that are attempting to humanise my people to be completely zapped. Because that feels repressive. And that results in more harm than good..

There is a big chunk of us Muslims reading these platforms, some are Palestinians and some are Arabs. I’ve had private messages to me in solidarity from fellow Arabs previously.

A healthy conversation on these topics is needed. Else it feels extremely dismissive.

So please do formulate a clearer policy on the issue so we know how to maintain those conversations without feelings silenced.

Thanks
