Could we have an "interracial" talk topic?

I would dearly love to talk to other mums in mixed relationships, about all the issues of mixed-race kids etc. I know I could start a general mixed race thread (and will do if this request is turned down), but there are so many 'sub-threads' I'd have to end up starting, from the thorny political issue of mixed-race hair to in-law (in)sensitivity, etc etc!

I'd go with Multicultural Families too

I can see it is a good idea but I am slightly worried that it may end up being too exclusive IYKWIM.

And, correct me if I'm wrong but I'm not certain issues couldn't be covered elsewhere on the boards, but then I guess there wouldn't have been a request to start the topic in the first place

Ho hum just thinking aloud here

Good idea, but I think it could end up putting some noses out of joint.

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:19

Surely it only becomes exclusive if people feel they cant comment or read threads. I often read sn threads and comment if I can. I dont feel excluded in anyway despite not having a child with sns.

suzywong · 29/10/2004 16:20

yes that's true

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:22

Is there a danger of inappropriate comments being made do you think? Thinking of remarks bordering on racism.

yingers74 · 29/10/2004 16:24

As most mumnetters seem lovely am sure it won't be an exclusive thread/topic. I know that sometimes the most helpful comments come from those who are outside the box!

suzywong · 29/10/2004 16:24

well not really, I mean I'm not against it but I just don't want any one to get more 'inter-racial' than other posters,.

Oh dear I'm not explaining myself verywell, I just mean I would like it to be open to everyone even if they are a Baptist and a Methodist, or a Blonde and a Brunette, just to give examples. Do you know what I mean?

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:26

But surely that's the purpose of a interracial thread? To be interracial rather than about blond/brunettes.

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:26

Or interracial families rather.

yingers74 · 29/10/2004 16:27

I would very much hope that this does not happen although whenever the topic of mixed race/cultural relationships comes up, there is always the possibility. many people still find it hard to accept that love can transcend race, colour etc etc etc

suzywong · 29/10/2004 16:29

no what `I mean is that it shouldn't necessarily be about colour, I would like to include families that are, and this is just an example, French and German rather than only Asian and African. Am I explaining my concern properly?

I agree with yingers about the outside the box element.

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:29

But that shouldnt be a reason not to have it. PErhaps more of a reason to have it iykwim.

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:29

I dont mean you meant not to have it yingers btw.

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:32

I see your point but I do think that are differences eg how families and society view it. A mixed race family where parents are different colours faces certain issues which two white parents dont necessarily.
I dont think it should not include mixed nationalites though.
Surely anyone who wants to post should be able to? It's not like we're going to check their crudentials first.

suzywong · 29/10/2004 16:33

I feel that if it does go ahead, there should be a moderator in place straight away. Because let's face it some prat, troll or otherwise, ,is going to be offensive.

I'm afraid I can't volunteer due to the different timezone.

I dont trust myself to be a calm person if someone does make nasty comments so probably I'm not the best person either.

suzywong · 29/10/2004 16:35

no, not a case of checking credentials, but I just worry that if some families feel they are multicultural but are not 'strictly' interracial they should still be welcome. I think people shoud set their own qualifying criteria.

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:35

Absolutely!

suzywong · 29/10/2004 16:37

just out of sheer nosiness, hercules, what' s the mix in your family? (I am WASP English and DH is Australian from Chinese Malaysian family)

hercules · 29/10/2004 16:38

My mums American and father English. I was brought up here. DH is Srilankan.

Shimmy21 · 29/10/2004 16:59

It's me again! The name dilemma seems to be going round in circles but actually everyone agrees that a thread is a good idea and that we don't want to exclude anyone who feels that this relates to them in some way. How about we have a vote on the names suggested so far and say for example by the end of today or tomorrow just go for the most popular??

After mature reflection my vote goes to....

'Multicultural Families'
(thought it covered most people with least ambiguity.

Suzywong, I agree that this area could be a potential target for ignorant trolls who want to stir things up but I think the chances are that we'll find less of that sort of nastiness here because people here will be more aware of what they're saying. Just look at how worried the posters on this thread have been about not offending each other!!

LipstickMum · 29/10/2004 18:52

I am fine with 'Multi Cultural Families' too.

motherinferior · 29/10/2004 19:06

I'm never sure what we are, to be honest. Because if we're both the same sort of mixed race - but he looks one thing and I look the other - does that make us the same? Oddly enough we have LOTS in common precisely because of our origins

Me being nosy again! Multicultural families sounds good to me. And as far as I can see - that can mean whatever people take it to mean. If they feel that it includes them, then it does - and it doesn't really matter about "credentials.".It can be all inclusive - like the other boards on MN. And I'll come and nosy on it and stick my oar in like I do everywhere else (dh is Welsh - does that count ?)
