Poster accused of being pbp

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 19:28

People reporting a post have been wrongly told that OP is a pbp and a troll. They have then stated that on the (innocent and genuine) posters thread.

This should not have happened.

A) Why is MNHQ responding in this way to people reporting a thread? Surely the decisions should be behind the scenes to avoid judgement?

B) How can MNHQ justify the fact that the WRONG information has been given to those reporting, leading to them accusing the OP on a thread in which they needed support?

I think troll hunters should have an immediate ban.

Ohalrightthen · 06/12/2020 19:30

Yeah, this was fucking appalling. That poor woman. I know we all make mistakes, but the stakes were very high this time.

PleasantVille · 06/12/2020 19:31

Which thread has this happened on?

Ohalrightthen · 06/12/2020 19:34

@PleasantVille

Which thread has this happened on?
A lady looking for advice fleeing her abusive husband. Apparently the fact that she stopped for a break a couple of times (during a 5hr drive with a baby and a dog) was proof that she was a troll.
Birdladybird · 06/12/2020 19:35

All those troll hunters should be banned. Its disgraceful. That poor lady needs support and they were all being absolute arseholes. I wish i could block them.

Birdladybird · 06/12/2020 19:35

Agree 100%!!
MiddleClassMother · 06/12/2020 19:35

We all make mistakes unfortunately, as awful as it was for the poor posted who was accused. I think MNHQ owe nothing more than an apology.

And maybe to make sure this doesn’t happen again, by both checking their facts and also not giving information on behind the scenes decisions to reporting posters?

That post has stuck in my head all day . Hope she's ok

RoseAndRose · 06/12/2020 19:58

I thought MNHQ usually deleted threads started by PBPs (and sometimes give that as the reason in a deletion message)

Not leave the thread standing even though they are also emailing other users who have reported concerns.

All sounds very odd

RivkaMumsnet · 06/12/2020 22:24

Thanks for all the feedback here.

We take troll hunting very seriously and delete any instance of it that is reported to us. We do also sometimes ban troll hunters, depending on the circumstances.

When threads are reported to us and we find out that they were started by a previously banned poster or a troll, we do generally let the reporter know as a matter of courtesy. However, in this instance, the wrong mail was sent to one reporter, which is where the confusion arose.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 23:02

Thank you for replying @RivkaMumsnet, but would you please consider ways to avoid this happening again? Maybe not sending a mail at all and letting the reporter know by the deletion message?

Tenyearsgone · 06/12/2020 23:26

I think MNHQ should let people know the conclusion to their reports.

And blame the trolls for people disbelieving some of the utter bollocks posted on here.

She's a random on the internet, all the weeping and wailing over her thread was ridiculous.

Offer support, yes. but the amount of 'I have tears streaming down my face reading this' posts were embarrassing to read.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 23:39

If there are checks to make sure that conclusion is right, and a genuine poster doesn’t get abuse because of an error I totally agree with you.

Btw I’ve never got a reply as to why a thread I’ve reported got deleted, only the general thread message. And that’s fine Smile

Or maybe posters could accept that there are very occasionally cases of human error and we can all get on with our day without making a one-off situation a teachable moment for MNHQ?
PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 23:43

Absolutely. How many reports are made every day? It must be hundreds. Every now and again there’s going to be a mistake.

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 23:44

@Tenyearsgone thank you, but the point of this was MNHQ disclosing wrong information which was then shared on the OPs thread, not any hyperbole on the thread!

OP posts:
Anordinarymum · 06/12/2020 23:48

Can someone tell me what pbp isplease

PurpleDaisies · 06/12/2020 23:49

Previously banned poster

Of ourselves there will be mistakes, no one is perfect! And MNHQ have a hell of a job, no one is disputing that Hmm

I AM disputing the wisdom of telling post reporters the reason why the reported post was banned, if there is even a chance it could be an error

OP posts:
OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 06/12/2020 23:54

*of course, not ourselves 🤦🏻‍♀️ sorry, autocorrect hates me....

It was just a mistake in this case. They sent the wrong email to the wrong person. The system generally works absolutely fine.

It’s nice to know when you’ve reported something whether you were right to be suspicious or not.

Tenyearsgone · 07/12/2020 00:22

Perhaps if posters didn't get so over invested in threads on here like it was an episode of Eastenders, MN wouldn't get trolled so much and situations like this wouldn't arise.

AuntieStella · 07/12/2020 06:22

They tried discontinuing the individual responses to reports.

It went down badly, and they were reinstated. I think it is right they exist.

But a review of which 'stock' emails can be sent when might help reduce error. Nothing that mentions a PBP until thread is down?
