How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

Just an update - those users who said they had an issue whereby they couldn't click the Mumsnet account menu, we have now released a fix for this, so this should now be working.

FlissMumsnet · 14/11/2020 20:57

MrsBrunch - the least we can do is try to get your numbers up for boasting purposes!

We're sorry this feature isn't working well and is not popular for everyone. We'll make sure this gets another look asap - sorry for any faff.

Hi all,

A quick update on some changes we're about to release.

Following your feedback we’ve separated PM notifications from the others (Threads I’m on etc) - you’ll see a red numbered dot on the top right of your Mumsnet account icon for notifications from your feed and a turquoise numbered dot on the top left of your Mumsnet account icon when you get a PM.

We’ve also added an on/off setting to your Talk preferences - you will be able to stop this notification if you untick the ‘notifications alert’ option. You will still be able to access the feed from the drop down Mumsnet account menu, but you just won’t see the red numbered dot. (nb You will still get the turquoise dot when you get PMs if you have chosen to ).

Finally, we've been reading your feedback closely and we will be putting more emphasis on testing features with users in a live environment so we can try to avoid the glitches with rollout and get feedback earlier in the process. We have set up an innovation panel for this purpose. Please do sign up here if you’re interested in inputting.

Very much hope these changes improve folks’ user experience. As ever, please do let us know your thoughts.

Big thanks

@LittleMissNaice the @mention notification should take you to that specific post. Your unread notifications for threads I'm watching should take you to the last unread post on that thread based on when you last viewed that thread.

Are you saying something different is happening, or you'd prefer something different to happen?

JanineMumsnet · 17/11/2020 08:37

@MrsBrunch

I've turned notifications off but still getting them.
Can I just clarify, are you still getting the red dot even though you have turned it off?

You will still be able to access the feed which will still update with notifications if you turn it off, but you should see the red dot.

JanineMumsnet · 17/11/2020 11:59

To those still saying they have unticked the notifications feed alert in their talk preferences and they are still getting notifications. As I said, you will still get updates on the notifications page. But you should not be getting the numbered red dot.

If you are still getting the red dot is it possible to give some information about what browser/device you are using. Thanks

JanineMumsnet · 17/11/2020 15:33

@dinglethedragon this is strange. When you say you've started receiving them, how many have you received? Do you have the URLs to these threads?

Thanks

JanineMumsnet · 17/11/2020 15:36

@eatyourveg

Its not letting me reply to pms - I click send and I just get a message saying mumsnet says ok and nothing appears in the sent messages.

Whats going on?

@eatyourveg this will be unconnected to the notifications alerts as we haven't made any changes to PMs.

To identify the cause of this would it be possible for you to send details of the device/browser you are using? If you could also send a screen shot of the message you get when you press OK, that would be helpful.

Thanks

@dinglethedragon Thanks for these links, this really helps us. Our tech team are working on a fix for this.

JanineMumsnet · 18/11/2020 08:24

Thanks for the reports of this issue and the URLs, it's really helped. We have identified the issue and we are implementing a fix

JanineMumsnet · 18/11/2020 15:43

@earthyfire

No customise option on desktop for me - just want the notifications to stop every time someone comments on a thread I've also commented on!
@earthyfire would you be able to share a screen shot of the page without the customise option as this should be there?

If you are unable to access your talk preferences from the menu, you should be able to view them here www.mumsnet.com/Talk?call=Preferences

JanineMumsnet · 19/11/2020 15:56

@LittleMissNaice

Unread notifications should take you to the exact post if it's a mention or the first unread post made since you previously looked at that thread.

Mentions should always take you to the specific post you were mentioned in even if you have a bookmark set.

Your notifications feed won't take you to your bookmark.

But if you're saying that you are being taken to an entirely random place within the thread it would be good to get an example of where this happens. It would be easiest for mentions. If you could send me the exact URL linked in your mention and then if the link doesn't take you there could you post a screen shot of where in the thread it does take you?

Thanks

JanineMumsnet · 19/11/2020 16:24

@LittleMissNaice

Thanks for this info.

A screen shot would be helpful, because I don't know how many posts per page you viewing as you can customise this in your talk preferences.

Thanks

Sorry I've only just seen this message because I am ignoring the annoying red dot. Yes it's still there. I turned notifications off but when I go back to it it's ticked again.

Haven't checked for a while though so that might have changed by now but I still have growing numbers on my horrible red dot.[/quote]
@MrsBrunch

That shouldn't be happening. It would be great if you can try to untick the setting and save it again to see if it works now.

If it doesn't work, could you let me know what device and browser you are using?

JanineMumsnet · 07/12/2020 12:45

@Aztectrousers is this still happening? What device/browser are you using?
