How to view your Mumsnet notifications

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 10:24

As of today, some of you may notice that your ‘My Mumsnet’ icon at the top right of the screen will start to show a red numbered notification icon. We are rolling out a new notifications feed, the purpose of which is to let you know when there are updates to things that you are following.

To see your notifications, just click on the 'My Mumsnet' icon and select 'Notifications' from the drop down menu.

At the moment there are two types of notifications displayed within your feed:

Mentions on a thread. When a user types @YourUsername within a thread, you’ll receive a notification for each mention you receive.

Updates to a thread you are watching. These will be aggregated by thread, so if there are 10 new posts on a thread you have been watching you will receive one notification for that thread. If you have email notifications switched on for mentions and ‘threads I’m watching’, you will still receive these via email too.

When you have clicked on a notification in your feed that notification will be marked as read.

If you have a lot of notifications and you want to dismiss them all, just click ‘mark all as read’.

Please be aware, you may not see this feature straight away as we are releasing this feature incrementally, but soon enough this should be available to all users.

Over time we’ll make improvements to the notifications feed, so we welcome any and all comments. Please leave your feedback and questions below.

@WitchesSpelleas this is functionality we want to add eventually, but for the first iteration it will simply be mentions and watched threads on for all.

JanineMumsnet · 09/11/2020 18:03

Just to say this is paused at the moment and is undergoing some final testing. I will update the thread tomorrow when it is rolled out again.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 08:43

@ShirleyPhallus and @WitchesSpelleas You are totally right and these are absolutely things we want to implement further down the line. I can't say when that will be, but it is something we have in our sights to improve.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 13:20

We are now rolling out this feature again. Those who see the feature may notice there are already notifications in their feed that date back a few days. This is because the service has been live in the background collecting notification data. You should be able to 'mark all as read' if you have already seen these posts previously.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 13:55

@SoupDragon you are able to turn off email notifications by going to you talk preferences here. At the moment you cannot turn off the feed notifications.

JustscreamMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:15

Hello all, I think there's some confusion here - we aren't sending any more notifications or changing the frequency of emails or anything - it's merely the addition of a little red dot, showing you that you have new notifications in your notifications list (eg there's a new post on thread I'm watching.) It's pretty standard practice on websites and something that some users have asked for and wondered why Mumsnet doesn't have.
If it's operating any different from that for anyone then please let us know!

JustscreamMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:38

Hiya,
I understand those saying it's not necessary - because you can look at threads I'm on/ watching - but with the old system you'd have to check those to know if anyone had posted on those threads (or get an email notification). This saves you having to check, which some people have said they'd like.

The volume of notifications showing at launch is artificially high - it's because it's been released on the testing environment for a few days before going out live - sorry about that. Once you've cleared those then it will work normally.
Can we just give it a few days to settle and then see how we all feel - as said it's a pretty standard feature on most sites? Thanks for the feedback though, always useful.

JustscreamMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:40

@DappledThings

It's frustrating as its showing 20+ notifications and I don't seem to be able to clear it unless I click on each notification??

There is a mark all as read option which saves you doing them all individually. Not sure why they've made that grey as it makes it less than obvious.

Still not as helpful as an option just to switch them off entirely would be.

Good point about the low visibility of the "mark all as read" button - we'll look at making that more prominent asap. Thanks.

JustineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:46

Why not add a turn off notifications option whilst you're at it? Why would you not give your users the option?

As said we'll let things settle for a bit and see if folks still feel as strongly - if so then of we can look at adding an opt out. But experience tells me sometimes people get OK with things that they initially are sceptical of. Plus the mark all as read change is just cosmetic - won't require much back end work to do.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 15:51

@Blondeshavemorefun oh no! That shouldn't happen, when you click the icon you should see a drop down with your usual account options and an addition link to your notifications feed. Are you saying that doesn't happen at all for you? If so, what device/browser are you using?

@ShirleyPhallus do you have a screen shot? That shouldn't be happening - it should clear all your notifications.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:02

@EasilyDepleted If you have removed a thread from your watch list you won't get notifications for it.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:18

@bruffin do you have a screen shot of what you mean by this, as this shouldn't be happening

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:19

@mogloveseggs if you refresh the page the number on the notification should disappear.

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:43

@chomalungma when you say you've read the notifications, what do you mean? Do you mean you've looked at the feed but taken no other action on the feed? Or do you mean you have clicked into the feed and clicked on the notifications individually to read the posts on the thread? Or are you going to the feed and selecting 'mark all as read'? The notifications will disappear only if you click on them or if you select 'mark all as read'

JanineMumsnet · 10/11/2020 16:56

@WunWun You shouldn't be getting that. How are you hiding the threads? Are you removing them from your watch list? Or are using the separate hide thread feature?

JustineMumsnet · 11/11/2020 10:33

Hi again,
Thanks for all the feedback - it's clear this remains really annoying for quite a few so we're going to add an option to turn the red dot off. May take a week or so, so hang on in there and thanks in advance for your patience.

JustineMumsnet · 11/11/2020 10:39

@Dddaddy

Thank you *@JustineMumsnet*!

Can I just draw your attention to the way it’s working for threads that people have hidden? Is there a way to disable it notifying if you’ve hidden a thread?

Yes, this is a bug and we're working on this. Should be fixed in next few days. Apols for that.

JustineMumsnet · 11/11/2020 10:41

@LittleMissLockdown

Oh thank goodness for that!!

As a side note whilst we have you, I've heard a rumour that some people would like an edit button... Wink

Well some would and some wouldn't tbh. However I promise it's on our to do list but cannot promise it's imminent.

JanineMumsnet · 11/11/2020 15:16

Just to let everyone know that we have released a fix for the issue where some users had said that if they choose to 'hide' a thread they had previously watched they were still getting notifications.

From now on if you hide a thread you should not receive a notification for it.

JanineMumsnet · 11/11/2020 17:27

@LangClegsInSpace Thank you for flagging to us, our technical team are taking a look. We have removed usernames from @mentions while we investigate.

soniamumsnet · 12/11/2020 11:20

Hi @JustHereWithMyPopcorn just popping in to let you know that there is a 'mark all as read' option at the top of the page, which saves you doing them all individually. Thanks for all the feedback here which we'll look into. Flowers

soniamumsnet · 12/11/2020 11:47

Thanks for that perspective @JustHereWithMyPopcorn. Flowers

JanineMumsnet · 12/11/2020 14:37

@vanillandhoney thanks for flagging this. We will look into this now.

JanineMumsnet · 12/11/2020 14:39

@vanillandhoney I just wanted to check, are you using desktop or mobile? If it's mobile, what device are you using?

JanineMumsnet · 12/11/2020 14:42

@Noflora

Still not working on my laptop using Firefox, the ad means notifications and messages not clickable
Thanks for flagging this @Noflora we will hopefully have a fix for this shortly
