Does anyone else find that all this does is load the same threads again ad infinitum, and does actually load any new threads?

OP posts:

*doesn't actually load any new threads

wildcherries · 19/05/2020 16:59

Yeah. Really unhelpful tbh. I thought it was a glitch, but it keeps happening.

TheHighestSardine · 19/05/2020 17:02

It seems to load what would be page 2 now, rather than what was page 2 when you got page 1. So the page 1 stuff has been shuffled downwards, and shows as repeats.

Initial page 1:
Thread a
Thread b
Thread c
Thread d
Thread e
Thread f
Thread g
Thread h

Press more and you get a followup added, of

Thread d
Thread e
Thread f
Thread g
Thread h
Thread i
Thread j
Thread k

But if you'd pressed refresh instead, you'd have got a refreshed Page 1,

Thread 1
Thread 2
Thread 3
Thread 4
Thread 5
Thread a
Thread b
Thread c

and if you immediately pressed "more" then you'd get

Thread d
Thread e
Thread f
Thread g
Thread h
Thread i
Thread j
Thread k

but it would make sense then!

AGoodYearfortheRoses · 19/05/2020 17:04

Yes and it’s bloody annoying!

MyEnormousTurnip · 19/05/2020 17:08

Yes same here. I don’t bother with it for this reason.

LilyMumsnet · 19/05/2020 22:00

Hi all,

Can you let us know what devices and browsers you're using? Flowers

MyEnormousTurnip · 19/05/2020 22:50

IPhone 8 on safari.

BreatheDeeplyInTheSilence · 20/05/2020 10:56

Hi Lily
Using Chrome on my Laptop.

Tech · 20/05/2020 12:37

Hi, I think @TheHighestSardine has diagnosed this correctly. When you click "load more" the site loads the "next" page of active threads at the time you click. BUT the list might have moved on in the meantime as new threads move to the top. So you can see repeats. We'll have a look at this to see how easily fixable it is.

TheHighestSardine · 20/05/2020 16:40

Thumbs up @Tech. I can see a couple of paths (sorry, I do this for a living!) - either cache a bunch of thread references on first page load to allow for a few "more" presses, or skip threads that are already visible. Not sure if the latter is possible tbh, depending how you've already implemented.

I'm on the website, Firefox/Mac.

LilyMumsnet · 20/05/2020 18:15

Hi all,

Thanks so much for the information - we've sent it all over to our tech team now. We'll pop back as soon as we have an update. Flowers

shookbelves · 20/05/2020 18:22

This has been happening for months. You get some threads repeated multiple times. I thought it was me going bananas for a while, so I stopped using 'load more'.

00100001 · 21/05/2020 10:03

OP - I reported this (as well as others for quite some time) - it's a known issue that tech don't want to fix....

I still dont understand why MNHQ don;t know this and have a stock answer for stuff that comes up ALL THE TIME or better remove the faulty feature

Wha a waste of everyone's time.

OP: THere;s this fault
MNHQ: hi, OP we'll report it to tech!
OP: Ok, thanks

MNHQ: Tech say this is a known issue, and loads of people complain about it, tech can't won;t fix it. So, what we'll do is just leave it here, and not bother to update the rest of MNHQ. or have an internal FAQ, so that when someone else asks the EXACT SAME QUESTION in 5 days time, we can repeat the whole process 👍👍👍

here's @soniamumsnet's answr fro,m my thread

Hi, just popping in to say that this is a known issue that happens occasionally. Posters will view a list of top 50 active threads, and by the time you click 'load more' sometimes a duplicate thread will appear. Flowers"

@LilyMumsnet

there you go, saved you time and resources

Just to keep all of these together Grin

Why, when I click on Load More - can't I hide or do anything with the threads that do appear? This is still an issue.

LilyMumsnet · 21/05/2020 11:38

Hi all,

We appreciate it can be really frustrating sometimes bu it's always worth us re-flagging issues to our tech team, so we do appreciate it being raised.

00100001 · 21/05/2020 18:59

To what end?

are they trying to fix it?

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 21/05/2020 22:26

www.mumsnet.com/Talk/site_stuff/3823074-Has-Active-got-shorter

It was raised with Tech on 14th of Feb. Same issue - repeating threads under Load More. And at least 4 more threads since then, all saying the same thing.

Hi there,

Thanks for your patience on this.

Earlier this year we introduced the load more button as we could see members were reaching the end of Active quite frequently.

Some background on the Active list. The Mumsnet Active list is 'refreshed' every 5 minutes. We have to do this as it puts too much pressure on our servers to load a new list for every member for every view of Active.

So, what that means is that if you load Active towards the end of the 5 minutes and then click 'load more' then because the list has been refreshed, what was once on Page 1 might now be on Page 2, and hence the duplicate shows.

We realise that this isn't ideal and are looking at some possible options:

  1. Reducing that 5 minutes
  2. Hiding the duplicates as they load
  3. Building more flexibility into what it loads from our servers

The Tech team are discussing the right approach this week and we hope to able to release something in the next two weeks.

Thanks again for your patience.

MrAlyhakinsMassiveYacht · 25/05/2020 17:49

Tom - what about when you right click to try to hide any thread below the Load More, you are immediately taken to a "that page doesnt exist"?

00100001 · 26/05/2020 18:29

surely then, there's just no need to 'load more' of there just aren't that many active threads...

what counts as an "active" thread? one that has been posted on in a certain amount of time?

Why not just limit to/rename 50 most recent threads or top 100 currently active threads?
