Search by poster gone?

111 replies

PurpleDaisies · 04/04/2020 15:44

Just tried to find an old post of mine and spotted the search by poster option has gone.

Is this a mistake?

Search by poster gone?

Bringring I didn't get that impression from what Justine said at all.

Bringringbring12 · 08/04/2020 16:55

Don’t you think a bit of a coincidence?!

SoupDragon · 08/04/2020 17:10

No.

PurpleDaisies · 08/04/2020 17:12

But clear now only if pay

Is it? I haven’t seen anything saying that.

OP posts:
Bringringbring12 · 08/04/2020 18:57

No but I reckon the message will come soon enough.

Search functionality. Not exactly the most complex coding required and yet not been around for days. I suspect to demonstrate that people like this feature and perhaps more prepared to pay for mumsnet premium. No chance here!

SoupDragon · 08/04/2020 18:59

They probably fabricated Coronavirus to make us more reliant on Mumsnet and thus more likely to pay.

On our chinese phones no less

DramaAlpaca · 08/04/2020 20:08

Justine has further clarified about AS on her post about MN Premium in this section in a post at 19.45 (sorry can't link)

It's made clear there that MN don't intend AS to be a Premium feature.

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 09/04/2020 09:45

As I said, there is very rarely a reason to NEED to search for a poster.

When you post on a thread, it goes into your 'threads I'm watching.'

If you don't post on it/don't want to post on it, you can click 'watch this thread.'

So you can ALWAYS return to any particular thread, very easily.

In the vast majority of cases, people looking through a poster's posting history is not doing it with good intentions. Indeed, they will almost always be doing it for nefarious reasons.

I am very suspicious of ANYONE who is desperate to have the 'search for a poster' function restored. Especially the ones saying 'I may as well not BE here if I can't look at peoples posting history.' I mean WTAF? Confused

Trying to catch people out, and looking for something to throw in their face to make yourself look clever, is the reason for snooping though a poster's search history in the VAST MAJORITY of cases. (Probably at least 95% of them actually.)

As has been said before, many people will have consistencies in various threads, because many people don't want to be recognised.

And you don't need it to look for any threads of your OWN threads. They are in your 'threads I started' FGS.

PurpleDaisies · 09/04/2020 09:51

I am SUSPICIOUS about ANYONE that CAPITALISES certain WORDS.

This function was available, regardless of your views on it, and had now gone. It’s perfectly legitimate to want it back. It’s not for you to police people’s intentions.

And you don't need it to look for any threads of your OWN threads. They are in your 'threads I started' FGS.

It wasn’t a thread I was looking for. It was one post. I hadn’t started the thread. That’s right there in my opening post.

OP posts:
Roussette · 09/04/2020 10:06

@pleasepleasepleasehelp oh do give over.

I've explained why I like to be able to search for myself yet you have us all labelled as stalkers.

Forget the 'threads I started' nonsense.

Do you actually know how that works?

It is of no use whatsoever when you are looking back for a recipe you typed out to someone 4 years ago on a thread about cooking that you didn't start.

No sure you're au fait with how this all works TBH.

SoupDragon · 09/04/2020 10:09

When you post on a thread, it goes into your 'threads I'm watching.'

No it doesn't.

SoupDragon · 09/04/2020 10:12

As I said.....

Oh, well if you said it it must be true 🙄

Or it's just your own opinion.

Roussette · 09/04/2020 10:19

Or you don't know what you're talking about.

BIWI · 09/04/2020 11:12

Why is searching someone deemed 'nefarious'?! I want to know if someone is trolling or goading and AS is a very useful tool to help here - which then determines if I’m going to report a thread

Sorry if you don’t like that. Personally I can’t abide trolls.

PureedSocksAndPants · 09/04/2020 13:44

I’d like it back. But I’m not paying. It’s a basic search facility on a no frills site and we’ve always had it, so can we have it back please? Bit weird it’s vanished just as they’re now tapping us up for money.

I don’t contribute much these days but I like the recipes and products people mention so find poster search useful as I’ll often remember a name.

But hey that must make me one of please’s mythical snooping 95% (PROBABLY) Hmm

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 09/04/2020 13:50

@PurpleDaisies

It wasn’t a thread I was looking for. It was one post. I hadn’t started the thread. That’s right there in my opening post.

Even if you didn't post the thread; if you posted in it, it WILL be in your threads I'm watching.

You're either in denial, or are just being obtuse for the sake of it.

@SoupDragon

Yes, any post that you post, DOES go into your 'threads I'm watching.' Stop denying it.

@Roussette 4 years ago or not; the thread you posted on WILL BE IN THREADS I AM WATCHING.'

Unless of course, you were posting under a different name then.

And if it was 4 years back, how the hell are you going to remember the poster's name who started it, or the bloody thread name anyway.

As I said, you can deny it all you like; it doesn't change the fact that any thread you post on WILL go it to your 'threads I'm watching.' And there is very little (if any at all,) reason to look up a poster's name, and go into their posting history. People on here never do that with good intentions.

At least own it, and admit that you just want the 'search for a poster' function to try and catch people out, because you think it makes you look clever, when you throw stuff in their face.

'Search for a poster' function has gone again. I hope it never returns.

That will stop certain posters little games.

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 09/04/2020 13:53

@PureedSocksAndPants

I don’t contribute much these days but I like the recipes and products people mention so find poster search useful as I’ll often remember a name.

So you see peoples recipes, but don't bother contributing to the thread, (or clicking watch this thread,) yet amazingly, you remember the poster's name who posted the thread.

Amazing memory! Wink

PurpleDaisies · 09/04/2020 13:55

Even if you didn't post the thread; if you posted in it, it WILL be in your threads I'm watching.

No. It isn’t. I turned off that option years because I don’t want to watch every thread I’ve ever posted on. There must be thousands.

OP posts:
PureedSocksAndPants · 09/04/2020 13:55

Well let’s hope the CAPS lock doesn’t STOP working for you please.

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 09/04/2020 13:56

@PurpleDaisies

No. It isn’t. I turned off that option years because I don’t want to watch every thread I’ve ever posted on. There must be thousands.

How INCREDIBLY convenient. Hmm

PurpleDaisies · 09/04/2020 13:57

please you’re being RIDICULOUS.

OP posts:
pleasepleasepleasehelp · 09/04/2020 13:58

@PurpleDaisies

And if that's the case (that you have turned off watch this thread' facility so threads don't automatically go into your threads I'm watching; ) why on earth wouldn't you click on watch this thread manually if you are interested in it?! Wink

As I said, VERY convenient.

BovaryX · 09/04/2020 14:00

Well, the anodyne comments about what happened to a useful feature have certainly elicited some forcefully bizarre responses....

pleasepleasepleasehelp · 09/04/2020 14:02

@PurpleDaisies Call me whatever names you like, I still stand my opinion that there is no need for a search for poster function, as the vast majority of the time, it's only used for nefarious reasons, and to try and catch people out, so you can try and make yourself look clever.

But hey ho, you keep denying that all of ya. I can't stop you denying it.

I hope it NEVER returns. Grin
