Hello all
Just a heads up that we've made some v exciting improvements to @ mentions on both desktop and mobile. On mobile you'll now find the '@' icon below the message composer, and on desktop below the composer there is some copy about how to mention a user. (Up to now, we've been a bit rubbish at making it clear how to mention users on a thread - sorry - and so we hope these changes will fix all that.)
You've also been telling us about getting @ mentions in threads that aren't meant for you (but I've never even watched Love Island/owned a ferret/renovated a houseboat). This usually happens because either a user has mistyped the username, or a user has only written part of a username. For example, they might say @janine to me, when my username is @JanineMumsnet. There may be another user who currently has the username janine, or who has previously used the username janine and they will get the notification and not me.
We've made some improvements which, fingers crossed, will help prevent such unwanted notifications. On mobile when you press the '@' icon a list will appear displaying usernames from the thread - it will highlight with an icon who the OP is, and it will highlight if anyone from MNHQ has replied. You can either select the username if it is there, or if you start typing it will suggest people from the thread. On desktop if a user types in an '@' symbol the same list will appear.
It's important to point out, you can still mention users who haven't posted on the thread, the tool just won't suggest or autocomplete any usernames that don't appear on the thread, you will simply need to type those out in the way you do currently.
We really hope this improves your experience of using the site, and as ever, if you have any feedback, please leave it below.
A gentle reminder, if you don't want to receive email notifications for @ mentions, you can adjust your settings here.
Thanks
MNHQ
