Mumsnet Data Breach - FAQs

JustineMumsnet · 08/02/2019 11:49

As lots of the same queries re the data breach are reappearing we've made an FAQs page Do let us know if there's anything important we've left off. We'll keep updating this document as soon as we have further any further info. Thanks.

EDITED BY MNHQ AT 17.15 ON FEBRUARY 8: We're now as sure as we can be that the total number of accounts affected by this breach was 46. We will be contacting these users within the next hour or so.

OP posts:
Shadow1234 · 08/02/2019 19:21

Sorry to sound naive, but if I have been able to log back in with my original email and password (and havent received an e-mail from mumsnet), does that mean I should be ok to carry on as normal, or would it still be best to de-register and make a new account?

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 08/02/2019 19:35

@MNHQ, Can I ask why my post is being overlooked.

Your clearly reading posts?

You advise 46 people have been affected by the breach, is this number including those who accessed other peoples accounts?

46 users you advise have breached accounts, can you explain in further detail what this means if those who have been able to access other accounts are not included in the “breach”

Confused
WheelyCote · 08/02/2019 19:40

I thought something was strange.

Have repeatedly had to sign in every time I come back to mumsnet. I've had the email

Is it an issue resulting from Mumsnet or an outside force?

StoneofDestiny · 08/02/2019 19:41

Is it only those who log on through the AP that are affected?

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 08/02/2019 19:50

Was the App or Gransnet affected?
No, those who solely use the Talk and Pregnancy app and those who use only Gransnet are not on the same user service, so this doesn’t apply to them.

From FAQ’s on this link @StoneofDestiny

Temporaryanonymity · 08/02/2019 19:54

I often get an email telling me that someone has mentioned me on a thread, but when I go there it isn't me. I thought it was a weird quirk but I am thinking it might not be now.

Lalalalalalalalaland · 08/02/2019 20:27

I had to set up a new account with the email address i previously used.

It should have told me that email was in use

FedUpWithBriiiiiick · 08/02/2019 20:57

MNHW, who is your Data Protection Officer? What are they doing?

Your track record of dealing with data incidents is not great, to say the least... Hmm

WhatTheNightBrings · 08/02/2019 21:01

Where are we at with emailing the user list? How many emails are still to go out?

Smotheroffive · 08/02/2019 21:05

I say again, everyone is supposed to getting the generic mail stating the OP on the other thread that you're now ignoring. Boring, but why oh why is it taking so long, serious system issues

brizzledrizzle · 08/02/2019 21:17

Is this email address a valid mumsnet address:

[email protected]

I have received, to date, three emails about the breach from this address. All three were sent to an email address which I have never used for Mumsnet or for anything other than emails from close family.

IceRebel · 08/02/2019 21:20

MNHQ can you comment with some insight into what Zoflorabore has said in the other thread

I received an email to say that although I had accessed someone else's account, nobody had accessed mine.
Thanks MNHQ

How can their account not have been accessed if they have managed to access another account? I thought the point was the system had mixed up 2 users who logged in at the same time, switching them so they ended up in each others accounts, is this not the case?

sponkle · 08/02/2019 21:37

I was automatically logged out yesterday. I logged back in with a password reset option from you.

Today I received an email to the email account I'm registered to mumsnet with from 'PayPal' about activity on my account. This was clearly spam as I don't have a PayPal account.

Very dubious. Obviously this was a phishing attempt.

Not impressed.

Wallywobbles · 08/02/2019 21:47

@LilyMumsnet it’s the talk app on iPhone that won’t let me login using FB, using safari on iPhone it works fine (this is what I’m using now!).

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 08/02/2019 21:56

@IceRebel

I’m thinking that’s why they are ignoring my concerns Confused

RegularShowRules · 08/02/2019 21:58

If your username shows up twice in your username history does that mean my account has been breached?

TrixieFranklin · 08/02/2019 22:26

I'm also very interested to see what HQ have to say re Zoflorabore 's situation, it doesn't tie in with the issue they've outlined at all.

Also, they said the generic email would be sent by close of play today, I haven't received anything still. I would like a copy for my records incase it comes to light my account has been involved or for any future issues.

NotAgainSilly · 08/02/2019 22:27

MNHW, who is your Data Protection Officer? What are they doing?

^ this

TrixieFranklin · 08/02/2019 22:28

@RegularShowRules this is covered in the FAQs.

See below:

Why are some of my nicknames duplicated in my list of usernames?
If you have ever gone back to a nickname after using another nickname, it may appear twice in your list. This is how the site currently works, and is not related to the breach. If we have time, we will update this, so that in future you get a simple list of nicknames that you have used, with no duplicates.

Pickofthepops · 08/02/2019 22:29

Not happy. Found out about this through logging into app again having been unable to access it today, Pure chance that I saw this thread on the current topics List. My email account seemed to have password changed tonight. Thanks a lot mumsnet! You could have emailed immediately this broke!

SeeYouLaterUserData · 08/02/2019 22:30

MNHW, who is your Data Protection Officer? What are they doing?

Good question.

LilyMumsnet · 08/02/2019 22:36

@HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend

I asked this on the other thread.

Yes, sorry, we've only sent mails to those accounts we know for sure were breached. Not to those who were able to log in as someone else yet. It's on our list to do first thing. Name changes shouldn't effect this

I thought the breach was that you were able to log into someone else's account and those individuals had been emailed/PM'd?

Surely you must understand the switched accounts are also breached.

The above post is contradictory and therefore many users are confused. I understand investigations are proceeding, however surely you can see the confusion here?

Hello,

Apologies for any confusion here. We have emailed users who were accidentally logged into an account that wasn't their own.

IceRebel · 08/02/2019 22:41

@LilyMumsnet, any insight into @zoflorabore 's situation? As that sounds at odds with what I, and many others, are understanding to have happened with the breach.

HaudYerWheeshtYaWeeBellend · 08/02/2019 22:43

Yes, @JustineMNHQ said this last night... however you’ve still now answered my question, are those of the 46 including those who were able to access other accounts included in this figure ?

Your reply is vague at a very basic level MN?

You also haven’t answered YOUR contradictory post @MNHQ.

logindoesntwork · 08/02/2019 22:45

I can't log in, either on my phone or laptop. I've created this account just to mention this (I know! So much time on my hands, eh!).

I deregistered last night, and created a new account.

Now - I put in my new email address, then it takes me to a screen where my OLD email address is inserted and cannot be changed. Obviously no password will work, because the address is from a deregistered account.

I'm not crying about being unable to post any more, but Mumsnet, I think your technology is bust.
