Mumsnet Data Breach - FAQs

JustineMumsnet · 08/02/2019 11:49

As lots of the same queries re the data breach are reappearing we've made an FAQs page Do let us know if there's anything important we've left off. We'll keep updating this document as soon as we have further any further info. Thanks.

EDITED BY MNHQ AT 17.15 ON FEBRUARY 8: We're now as sure as we can be that the total number of accounts affected by this breach was 46. We will be contacting these users within the next hour or so.

I also don't understand why people keep saying they haven't had (the email)

After the repeated issues, perhaps some feel it would offer reassurance that things are finally working properly?

And no, I've not had one either ...

ContinuityError · 09/02/2019 13:49

My email arrived late this morning - but in a Promotions folder, not in the Inbox.

WhatTheNightBrings · 09/02/2019 13:52

Halle-bloody-lujah, an email just arrived.

Now just to wait for the responses to all the other queries raised.

I'm thinking MN have clocked out for the weekend.

WhatTheNightBrings · 09/02/2019 13:53

In fact, the email is dated at the top 09/02/2019 so wasn't even actually compiled til today.

Why's that MN?

WhentheDealGoesDown1 · 09/02/2019 13:56

My email arrived this morning which was quite quick considering that it took Twitter and Dixon’s several weeks to send their emails after their data breaches

TrixieFranklin · 09/02/2019 14:00

It's probably dated today because as they said earlier they were changing the wording as it previously referenced the issues/whatever that happened 'yesterday' (it would have been yesterday when the first emails were sent) but it's not a few days past so they said they were updating it.

TakeTwo0fThat · 09/02/2019 14:08

I don't understand why people are so fixated on receiving an email with info that's clearly been stated on Mumsnet. There's nothing new in the email. I received the email this morning even though it's dated the 8th.
The most important email should be to those accounts that were affected.

HaventGotAllDay · 09/02/2019 14:19

Is anyone going to address the fact that seemingly quite a few of us are no longer recognised under our regular email/id combos?
I have received the generic email to the address I used to set up THIS account (yesterday!)
My "proper" account (BookMeOnTheSudExpress) won't recognise me. Keeps telling me to wait for the email verification as though I'm setting up a new account
And no, I'm not going to "contact us" I've said it here, twice now.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/02/2019 15:31

I received an email. Very generic and not clear

Generic? Well, something being sent to close to a million people is hardly going to to be personalised, is it? They wanted us to get it within the next ten years or so...

Not clear? I had no difficulty working out what was being said: "we had a breach, we are trying to find out exactly what happened, when we know any more we will tell you" and an address to contact if you have specific worries.

They have now done the last bit, telling us when they know any more, in the post three up the page.

It's also clear that the people who were actually affected by this , all forty-six of them, have been notified individually as soon as they were identified. The rest of us, quite genuinely, did not and do not have anything to worry about on this occasion.

Except of course that using the internet at all puts everyone at risk of having their details observed by an unauthorised third party -- as does using a mobile phone or satnav, having an Alexa or equivalent, or watching some televisions, or having a GP, bank account, electricity account, vote.... And walking down the street in town gives your image to anyone who has a CCTV trained on that street, so that if they choose to they can broadcast it on the internet for all to see as you fall over on a banana skin, such larks eh.

I haven't seen any of the 46 posters who are directly involved being rude or sarcastic

Have their identities been shared?

Tavannach · 09/02/2019 16:10

I too have tried to change my password a couple of times since the breach, but can only log in with my old password.

rocketromano · 09/02/2019 16:11

Does anyone know if I delete my account and then re-reg with same email will that mean my previous nicknames etc will no longer be accessible/visible. I’m concerned if this happens again someone could look at all my prev posts and I’d be vulnerable to doxxing. I sometimes name change due to concerns relating to my work etc.
Maybe I’ll need to create a stand alone email address just for mumsnet to prevent this happening Sad

yesmelord · 09/02/2019 16:21

I've not had any emails but my account keeps logging me out and then I have to wait ages before it will let me log back in?

This has never happened before now- I'm always signed in on the app.

mauve2019 · 09/02/2019 16:29

my mumsnet was hacked - just changed my password

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 09/02/2019 16:29

Your previous usernames will no longer be associated with your email address once you deregister. Do drop us a line at [email protected] if there's anything we can do to help.

HaventGotAllDay · 09/02/2019 16:40

Can anyone on this thread see my posts from yesterday and today?

Because HQ keep answering other people's and not mine and I'm wondering if I'm invisible.

Hey ho.

TakeTwo0fThat · 09/02/2019 16:48

@HaventGotAllDay I can see your post right now you just made in here

rocketromano · 09/02/2019 16:54

Thanks becky

WhatTheNightBrings · 09/02/2019 17:02

@YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet

Is anyone checking thread reports today?

HaventGotAllDay · 09/02/2019 17:06

Thanks TakeTwo!

AwdBovril · 09/02/2019 17:39

I was logged out the other day, along with many other users, & reset my password. However, I just tried to change something on my account & it wouldn't accept the new password, only the old one. It's not a typo, they are completely different sets of characters.

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 09/02/2019 17:44

@HaventGotAllDay we're not ignoring you! Sorry for the delay - we've just sent you a mail about your account.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 09/02/2019 17:44

I can't see how changing one's password is going to help anything when the password is the one thing that it's been made very clear anyone who was given brief access to someone's account would not be able to see or change?

I mean, changing your password at intervals is good, like using a different password for each place one goes to, but why do it now?

YetAnotherBeckyMumsnet · 09/02/2019 17:47

Yes we're looking at and responding to all reports as usual. We've quite a substantial number to get through, however, and so it may take longer than usual to hear back from us.
