MNHQ - why are you so squeamish about any discussion about leaving the EU

I know there is a Brexit board - and very valuable it is too. I know you don't want AIBU flooded with Brexit related topics. But why are you moving genuine AIBU threads onto the Brexit board? They are proving popular at engaging MNers who don't frequent the Brexit topic and are very informative. You allow so many "posting here for traffic" threads to stay. You've told me you get a lot of reports/complaints - why give in to the people who are trying to stifle debate and information sharing? It's like you're encouraging the dumbing down of MN.

NinjaGoSaysNo · 13/11/2018 13:15

I agree with the above post and would also like clarity on this.

ChardonnaysPrettySister · 13/11/2018 13:23

Agree with OP.

Cattenberg · 13/11/2018 13:27

I've wondered this as well. It's such an important issue that could affect many aspects of our lives, and it's happening now.

Talkinpeece · 13/11/2018 13:27

Agree with the OP

frumpety · 13/11/2018 13:28

I wonder why people complain ? can they just not click on the thread ?

Helmetbymidnight · 13/11/2018 13:32

Agree. But also think there is a cohort of posters who really don't like people talking about Brexit.

(Bizarrely, I think they are people who voted for it.)

ElfinStardust · 13/11/2018 13:34

I don't get why people open the thread just to say "yawn! Not this again - there is a Brexit board, you know ...." Why bother - just ignore as I do the vast majority of threads. But why report it and why do MNHQ indulge them?

OP posts:
WitchyMcWitchface · 13/11/2018 13:35

Yes, there is definitely a shortage of discussion, tv debate, new items, newspapers articles, online argument - we need more!!! Hmm

gamerchick · 13/11/2018 13:35

You could try reporting the posting for traffic ones and get them moved.

Talkinpeece · 13/11/2018 13:38

Witchy
Considering it took Dominic Raab until last week to realise how important the Dover Calais bottleneck is,
YES WE DO need a lot more discussion, information and debate.

AuntieStella · 13/11/2018 13:40

It's an important enough subject to have its own topic.

I think it'sright that threads are moved into it.

It was IIRC introduced by popuoar demand, it means it's easy to find threads.

Talkinpeece · 13/11/2018 13:44

auntiestella
So do relationships, TV, education, politics, cookery, schools and everything else that ends up in AIBU

why does only Brexit always get moved ?

Buteo · 13/11/2018 13:45

Or MN could make the Brexit board more obvious, rather than hiding under “Other stuff”.

Given that “Sporting Events” has its own headline category, yet has had only a handful of comments in the last 6 months, why not give such an active topic as Brexit its own more prominent category?

Dfwr · 13/11/2018 13:45

I would like to see somewhere to put all the trans threads and have them moved to that part of the site. The argument is always that they are entitled to be anywhere. So why does this not apply to all subjects?

WitchesWeb · 13/11/2018 13:46

I think it's right that they are moved. Just as otger threads.

It's like you're encouraging the dumbing down of MN.

Congratulations for the most ridiculous comnent of the day. Hmm

surferjet · 13/11/2018 13:47

Well, as someone who has hidden the brexit board for my own sanity, I do understand why people complain.
The Brexit topic has got it’s own board so you really should be starting threads there.
It’s not just brexit threads people complain about though, it’s anything trans related too ( from what I’ve seen )

But I honestly think it’s not leavers who ask for threads to be moved, I’ve ertainly never complained, it’s probably people who have no interest in brexit and come on MN for light relief.
Yes I know they can ignore the threads, but why should they see them at all when there’s a dedicated board that they’ve probably hidden?

Dfwr · 13/11/2018 13:51

I don't give a stuff about seeing the Brexit stuff, it doesn't bother me, but the trans stuff does - and I don't see the difference ?

ElfinStardust · 13/11/2018 13:56

You could try reporting the posting for traffic ones and get them moved Why would I bother? I just scroll past them like a grown-up.

OP posts:
BertramKibbler · 13/11/2018 13:57

They rarely move AIBU posts which should be on the feminist board or the Christmas board etc

PCPlumsTruncheon · 13/11/2018 13:58

Completely agree. At least half the threads in AIBU don’t belong there.
The OP of the latest thread specifically requested for it not to be moved to the Brexit board but MNHQ moved it anyway.
So it’s fine to use the board with the most traffic to ask people what they’re having for dinner but not to discuss the most important issue facing us and our children?
Makes perfect sense Hmm

BollocksToBrexit · 13/11/2018 14:01

I agree OP. I think the ones who complain don't want to see threads about brexit but bizarrely also don't want other people to see them either.

gamerchick · 13/11/2018 14:02

You're the one who used it as an example.

You want to talk about it that's fine. But for some it causes anxiety over something they don't have control over. You might want to debate every single little detail like a dumped girlfriend who's ex has met someone else but some people get bored of it.

There is a Brexit board, nobody is stopping you talking about it.

Talkstotrees · 13/11/2018 14:05

I’d like to know too please.

Surfer, can’t those after light relief or, like yourself, with Brexit fatigue, not just scroll on by?

It seems to me that AIBU Brexit threads are often started by posters who don’t frequent the Brexit board. Perhaps this is because they’re unaware of the board (given that it’s tucked away) or maybe they’re looking for a wider audience and therefore more diverse (representative even) opinions.

I find the occasional Brexit related thread in ‘Politics’ and directed them over to ‘Brexit’, so it seems that it’s not 100% known that there is a correct place to post or look for information.

I am pretty confident that all of those complaining wish to shut down conversation.

AIBU Brexit threads are not particularly common and could be used to direct people to the Brexit board without being removed, imo.

Thomasinaa · 13/11/2018 14:09

A lot of people don't realise there are likely to be serious food and medicine shortages very soon. I'd have thought MN would want to do all they can to ensure people understand what's going on.

meditrina · 13/11/2018 14:12

I don't see how anyone's views on Brexit are preventing those who are interested from using the topic!

No one's preventing anything - and an active topic does add momentum.

And I think MNHQ should move more threads into the topics (perhaps after a gentle cull, so there are fewer but better used)
