MNHQ - why are you so squeamish about any discussion about leaving the EU

ElfinStardust · 13/11/2018 13:06

I know there is a Brexit board - and very valuable it is too. I know you don't want AIBU flooded with Brexit related topics. But why are you moving genuine AIBU threads onto the Brexit board? They are proving popular at engaging MNers who don't frequent the Brexit topic and are very informative. You allow so many "posting here for traffic" threads to stay. You've told me you get a lot of reports/complaints - why give in to the people who are trying to stifle debate and information sharing? It's like you're encouraging the dumbing down of MN.

Yes Gamerchick it is their right to be bored with it. Just as it is my right not to be.

Staringcoat · 13/11/2018 17:48

Cassandra we'll have to agree to disagree. I think Mumsnet are being a bit squeamish about it. I can understand the reasons why.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/11/2018 17:49

this is exactly the attitude that makes it impossible to have a decent discussion about BREXIT on MN & the reason it needs to be confined to its own board.
It’s not DEBATE that we don’t want, it’s this pathetic, childish, boringly repetitive stream of ridiculous, unfounded, insults.

Nope. Two and a half years later and brexiteers still can’t up with a coherent list of benefits to leaving the Eu.
So they have ‘fatigue’ with people losing their jobs and their rights and wanting to understand why. And people worried about the gfa and wanting solutions.
Aww poor brexiteers. How very boring it is.

gamerchick · 13/11/2018 17:54

Rinse and repeat Grin

RedDogsBeg · 13/11/2018 18:10

It's like you're encouraging the dumbing down of MN.

I am pretty confident that all of those complaining wish to shut down conversation.

OTOH moving threads with a wider interest is just giving in to a small group of people who could - if they were not such special little snowflakes - just avoid clicking on the thread.

if you want to do the internet equivalent of sticking your fingers in your ears wrt this issue

Its cause people who voted for it would rather ignore it.

Lots of heads in the sand.

No one ever said brexiteers were intelligent.

That enough for you StaringCoat?

Do you really think attitudes like those are conducive to debate and opposing views? Those comments are just a window into what practically every Brexit thread on here is like, that's not discussion it is just labouring a particular view point ad naseum.

People don't want to engage with the threads outside the Brexit Board because it is an exercise in futility.

Peregrina · 13/11/2018 18:14

If or when we crash out with no deal and the Leavers start whining, will you MNHQ please guarantee to shift their threads to a 'Nobody told us' place, where they can whine to their hearts content?

surferjet · 13/11/2018 18:18

Agree RedDogsBeg
Most Brexit threads are just an excuse to have a go at leave voters.
It’s all so predictable.

WitchesWeb · 13/11/2018 18:19

Aww poor brexiteers. How very boring it is.

You have assumed wrongly which way posters have voted. However admitting that some that are saying they prefer a seperate Brexit topic are remainers, doesn't fit your agenda.

Staringcoat · 13/11/2018 18:25

Reddogsbeg to be fair I think there is some legitimacy to the fingers in ears/shutting down conversation/heads in sand comments. They are opinions (which I personally believe have some merit). I genuinely don't see them as disparaging or impolite. We are still allowed to express opinions on Mumsnet aren't we?

The three comments about intelligence and dumbing down and snowflakes I agree are not helpful to the discussion.

If it's any consolation us remainers feel equal despair sometimes about the futility of these arguments and this situation. But how can progress be made without free and wide discussion?

RedDogsBeg · 13/11/2018 18:26

Peregrina if people start moaning if we crash out with No Deal unless they prefix their posts with "I voted Leave" how will you know they did in fact vote Leave? Or are you just going to assume that? Will those who voted Remain not moan?

Staringcoat · 13/11/2018 18:28

Surferjet believe me, as you will know, some of the Brexiteers are fairly forceful with their comments too!

Peregrina · 13/11/2018 18:30

Will people who voted remain not moan - well I am pretty sure we won't be whining 'nobody told us' because we did tell people, and it was dismissed as Project Fear.

RedDogsBeg · 13/11/2018 18:35

StaringCoat there never will be free and wide discussion with the attitudes displayed by some on here, they are NOT interested.

You don't think telling people they have their heads in the sand/fingers in their ears is dismissive? You really think that is a way to encourage people to engage in a debate with you?

Yes, we are still allowed to express opinions on MN, except on Brexit where there is only one true opinion all other views are dumb, lacking in intelligence, etc., etc.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/11/2018 18:37

Thirty years I’ve been discussing politics and I’ve never ever known people less able to articulate their case than brexiteers.

‘Ooh I cant give you my arguments for Brexit on a discussion site because a remainer was mean to me’

frumpety · 13/11/2018 18:50

I actually thought 24 hours before my thread got moved was quite good going considering the history of report and move on here Smile

BoneyBackJefferson · 13/11/2018 18:52

RedDogsBeg

I have said the same thing about getting people to engage but just get

‘Ooh I cant give you my arguments for Brexit on a discussion site because a remainer was mean to me’

as a response, but There are none so blind as those who will not see.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/11/2018 18:56

Show it to us then- share with us some benefits of Brexit. Share with us the good news. Many of us are struggling with job losses etc. So pretty please. Cheer us up.

Staringcoat · 13/11/2018 19:03

reddogsbed not all of us remainers are flinging insults about and sorry but I have been met with fingers in ears (or words to that effect) when I have tried to engage politely with leavers. That's not being insulting or dismissive , it's a fact!

RedDogsBeg · 13/11/2018 19:09

I didn't vote for Brexit so it is pointless asking or badgering me. I just believe, as I keep saying, that the prevailing attitude of some posters who dominate the Brexit threads does not encourage any form of discussion or exchange of ideas. There is nothing a Brexiter could say to some Remainers that will ever be good enough or accepted, the overriding tone of the threads is one of sheer disgust that people who voted leave did not vote the right way and how very dare they not have done as they were told.

Helmetbymidnight · 13/11/2018 19:19

the overriding tone of the threads is one of sheer disgust that people who voted leave did not vote the right way and how very dare they not have done as they were told

I think that’s ridiculous. I don’t think anyone feels disgust because leavvers didn’t do ‘what they were told?’

What is that?

Didn’t do what they were told by who? Did do what they were told by Farage, the mail, the sun, Johnson, jacobrees Mogg?

I’ve never ever met a remainer who thinks that.

RedDogsBeg · 13/11/2018 19:31

Oh come on Helmet you know exactly what I mean and it is rife on the Brexit Boards you just don't want to see it.

Talkinpeece · 13/11/2018 19:33

Brexit Fatigue
When it actually happens and stuff goes tits up, PLEASE do not pretend we did not warn you ....

And if by fluke it goes the right (ie the Norway model) do not complain that you did not get your empire back

Helmetbymidnight · 13/11/2018 19:44

Maybe, yeah, comfortably off over 65s voted for a movement led by extremely wealthy Etonian elites to deliberately make this country much poorer, more insular and to jeopardise the Gfa.
Yeah, put like that, it is disgusting.

ElfinStardust · 13/11/2018 19:51

@HebeMumsnet

we do accept that lots of folk on the boards get Brexit fatigue from time to time and so we tend to be slightly led by the feelings of the users on this one

What is this Brexit fatigue that you speak of? There'll be plenty of time for that after 29th March. If democracy tires or bores anyone at the moment, they can always take a rest from AIBU or any part of the board that bores them.

"Led by the feelings of users" - you've got 12million unique users, how many of them have to complain about a thread being in the "wrong" board before you move it?

we have to recognise that many of our users are experiencing 'Brexit overload' and perhaps want a bit of light relief, so we might try to keep Brexit threads away from general chat areas a bit more

Can't these delicate little flowers just scroll on past the threads that give them 'Brexit overload' without MummyNetHQ having to hide it from them?

OP posts:
RedDogsBeg · 13/11/2018 19:51

and there you have it exactly the attitude I'm talking about Helmet, you personally don't want to hear why people voted Leave you just want to tell them they were wrong, wrong, wrong and stupid, stupid, stupid.
