Webchat with Sarah Champion?

ArcheryAnnie · 23/04/2018 16:25

Sarah Champion has been tweeting about Mumsnet today (alas inaccurately - she tweeted a post on MN about "section 28" that was both satirical AND posted by a trans ally, when she assumed the opposite),

Since she seems to have opinions about Mumsnet, and is airing them in public, might she be a good candidate to invite for a webchat, so she can meet us directly herself?

I think it would be robust, but I also think it would be useful, and in the spirit of fostering a proper debate.

In the interests of keeping it civil, and not allowing it to be derailed by trolls and false-flaggers, I also think only posters who are already registered as of yesterday should be allowed to post on that thread.

What do you think, MNHQ?

We can but try, ArcheryAnnie. Let's see if any fellow MNers agree that it's a good idea (why wouldn't they?) and we meanwhile will pass it on to the relevant bods here.

Swallowfalls · 23/04/2018 17:23

Yep, seems a good idea to me Smile

ArcheryAnnie · 23/04/2018 17:24

Thank you!

PencilsInSpace · 23/04/2018 17:25

Yes please.

ChinnyReckon1 · 23/04/2018 17:26

Why do you think she would want to? And we all know what you mean by 'robust'.

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/04/2018 17:26

You think that she would be abused and harangued?

Anlaf · 23/04/2018 17:41

Good idea!

misscockerspaniel · 23/04/2018 17:52

Strike whilst the iron is hot Smile Please ask her MN.

EmpressOfJurisfiction · 23/04/2018 17:54

Yes from me too, please.

Ratherbehome · 23/04/2018 17:56

I think that is a good idea.

AbsintheFriends · 23/04/2018 17:59

Great idea. The proliferation of the Section 28 misinformation is so frustrating.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/04/2018 18:13

You think that she would be abused and harangued?

No, unless you are planning to abuse and harangue her, AssassinatedBeauty.

I think it's really important to be civil here, not least because I'd like her to listen, and not get defensive. But she's a national politician, and I think she can cope perfectly well with women not tiptoeing around the subject, especially when she herself has felt perfectly free to slander us on social media without checking her facts.

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/04/2018 18:15

What?! Of course not.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/04/2018 18:17

And I'd like to add that there's a lot of things she's done that I admire, as well as some things which I've thought questionable, which is another reason why it's been so frustrating to hear she has this distorted view of what is happening here on Mumsnet.

I really want our politicians to be able to take an informed, nuanced view on the safety of women and girls, and I'd like to think that Sarah Champion might find herself not so very far away from some of us as she currently imagines.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/04/2018 18:18

AssassinatedBeauty glad to hear it! I just wasn't sure what you meant by your question.

OP posts:
theaveragewife · 23/04/2018 18:21

Great idea!

AssassinatedBeauty · 23/04/2018 18:22

It was aimed at ChinnyReckon1, who was insinuating that "robust" mean something else.

ArcheryAnnie · 23/04/2018 18:26

Aha! I'm sorry for getting the wrong end of the stick!

I'm all for debate with anyone willing to engage in good faith. Especially politicians.

Caldonia · 23/04/2018 19:29

Yes, ask her. She's got an opinion about Mumsnet, so I think it would be great if she would come along and do a web chat and respond to questions from the floor (as it were). So many topics that we could cover.

Theinconstantgardener · 23/04/2018 19:34

Yes. I would be very surprised if she says yes though.

Floisme · 23/04/2018 19:50

Yes - and can we invite her via that Twitter thread?

WhereYouLeftIt · 23/04/2018 19:59

Yes please. Not sure she'd be up for it though.

SeaRabbit · 23/04/2018 20:24

Absolutely, yes.

Truscum · 23/04/2018 20:25

I think it’s a great idea, as is limiting the discussion to those posters who have been registered for a certain amount of time.

We’ve all noticed the little influx of ‘interesting’ posters on this topic and I wouldn’t want them to derail a web chat which I think is important to have.
