southeastastra · 03/05/2007 11:28

i don't get them at all

have you got your popup blocker on

NadineBaggott · 03/05/2007 11:32

Find your hosts file (at C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts for Windows XP) 2. Mine has a very long list with lots of known adservers in it so that I block most ads anywhere but I believe the specific line you need to add (under the line that says "127.0.0.1 localhost") to block the Mumsnet ads is 127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de 3. Save hosts file 4. Restart browser (you might also need to reboot the PC, I'm not sure) it works

GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 11:32

Eh?

OP posts:
NadineBaggott · 03/05/2007 11:33

do you want step by step

GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 11:37

Can you pretend I'm somebody who has never seen a computer before please?

Just speak to me as if I was a three year old

Right,

exactly where do I find my "hosts file"

OP posts:
NadineBaggott · 03/05/2007 11:49

right click on Start (the green button, bottom left - go to 'explore')
find C:\WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc\hosts

click to open hosts file
open in Notebook
cut and paste this to the bottom

127.0.0.1 adserver.adtech.de

save and close file
reboot

you shouldn't see any ads now (I just see one for Junior magazine but its not a problem)

GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 11:50

Got to go now, but will be back later for tutorial

OP posts:
purplemonkeydishwasher · 03/05/2007 11:50

hmmm...explore? don't have it. that's not for xp, is it?

NadineBaggott · 03/05/2007 11:54

yes

if you right click on start you should get a list starting with open followed by 'explore'

MamaG · 03/05/2007 12:03

NB THANK YOU

I've just done it and it works - I didn't realise how much those ads bugged me until they weren't there!

MamaG · 03/05/2007 12:03

(i also used step by step )

I know

GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 12:07

I did it, but nothings changed.

Still being assaulted by ads for Virgin and the Financial Times, and still taking ages to load.

Was hoping it might help speed up my totally abysmal dial-up speed of 16.8kbps

Am obviously totally doozie when it comes to technology.........

OP posts:
NadineBaggott · 03/05/2007 12:07

did you re-boot?

MamaG · 03/05/2007 12:11

gotta re boot y'know

GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 12:12

yes

I've just gone through it all again and the bit I copied (didn't have an option to paste) into it was there, so I must have done it right, I've added it again for good measure and will now try rebooting again......

OP posts:
MamaG · 03/05/2007 12:14

is it at teh BOTTOM

GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 12:23

I know it's at the BOTTOM, MamaG .

Yeeeeeeeee Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

By Gawd, Nadine, you're a genius.

Not much faster mind, but yay, those bloody annoying adverts are no more.

OP posts:
AitchTwoOh · 03/05/2007 12:25

GythaOggsFrog · 03/05/2007 12:34

Aaaaarrrggggggggghhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

I take it all back.

They've come back......

Bloody things are back............. a Financial Times one, and one from The Food Standards Agency about bloody salt.

How, what, where.............??????????????

Aaah... and to add insult to injury there's a new one that wasn't there before at the bottom, flashing at me, and advertising..... would you bloody believe it......... Adtech advertising

OP posts:
MamaG · 03/05/2007 12:40
