An idea to stop place marking

Placemarking can be very annoying, especially when a thread is filling up fast as people wait for the OP to return. However I am very guilty of it.

This got me to thinking about why I do it. And my reason is that I only every really look at my TIO feed and I don't really bother with the watching one. Now of course I could just sort my lazy arse out and actually click on the watching button, but I forget. Also, I like the deletion message if there is one, rather than a thread simply vanishing.

So I thought, why not have watching threads mixed in with the TIO. So a TIO feed would be a mixture of the two and work in the same way. It would look the same but perhaps you could have 'Watching' next to the title so you know you haven't actually posted on it.

Yes I know that I should change the way I use MN rather than expecting MN to change to suit me but I know I'm not the only person to do this.
It reminds me of desire lines that you see in the park; paths worn where people actually chose to walk rather than where the path is meant to be. Place marking is simply a desire line of how to use MN.

I wouid just like to be able to put a marker on the last post that I've read and be able to navigate straight to that one.

Dontactlikeyouknowme · 18/03/2017 19:02

You can bookmark your place.

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 18/03/2017 19:05

Do you mean bookmarks in the pc or tablet Donr?

WinkyisbackontheButterBeer · 18/03/2017 19:05

Dont - sorry

Dontactlikeyouknowme · 18/03/2017 19:06

I can bookmark on my phone on the mobile site. Just click the dots on the bottom of the post you want to bookmark.

NotStoppedAllDay · 18/03/2017 19:06

Placemarking has been around for years and you won't ever stop people doing it

So it's pointless

Wondermoomin · 18/03/2017 19:06

Yes you can bookmark your place - but I can only do that in the app on my phone, not online on my laptop - and the two don't seem to 'sync'. MN knew about this ages ago but didn't seem interested or thought it was just me ☹️

IvorHughJarrs · 18/03/2017 19:08

You can do that Winky. Hover your cursor over the bottom right corner of the last post and a blue oblong Bookmark tab appears. Click on it and the thread reopens at that point

ProfessorBranestawm · 18/03/2017 19:09

I don't use watched threads either, as whenever I post on a thread it says "added to watch list" and therefore bumps it up the watched list. So if I posted on loads of threads after watching one the latter would get 'lost'

Or am I doing it wrong? 😳

Dontactlikeyouknowme · 18/03/2017 19:10

You can turn that added to watch list thingie off.

Dontactlikeyouknowme · 18/03/2017 19:11

In customize. Untick it.

FallenSky · 18/03/2017 19:11

I've looked for a bookmark option. Mobile website. This is what shows for me. Am I missing something?

Go to customise and tick display bookmark links.

ProfessorBranestawm · 18/03/2017 19:14

Ah! Thanks so much dontact I'd not spotted that!

peaceloveandbiscuits · 18/03/2017 19:14

Wait what? You can bookmark your place in the app?

hugoagogo · 18/03/2017 19:15

I'm confused, I can bookmark the last post I read and go straight back to it and watched threads and threads I'm on are all mixed together aren't they? Confused

peaceloveandbiscuits · 18/03/2017 19:15

Oh my god, I've found it! This is life changing!

Okite · 18/03/2017 19:15

It'd be really nice if the 'watch this thread' option actually appeared on three dots menu too, otherwise you get to the end of the thread and have to move up to the top of it to watch it on the mobile app.

SisterMoonshine · 18/03/2017 19:15

I love place marking posts!
You know that there are others, all over the world sometimes, waiting to see how the penguin date or whatever went.
It's one of the best things about MN!

hugoagogo · 18/03/2017 19:16

That screenshot looks like you aren't signed in fallen

Dontactlikeyouknowme · 18/03/2017 19:19

Watched threads are separate to threads in on. Threads you post on will be added to watched threads unless you untlck the box in customise.

WrongTrouser · 18/03/2017 19:22

If I click my "watching" tab it shows me threads I'm on and threads I'm watching. Isn't that what you are saying you want OP?

FallenSky · 18/03/2017 19:24

Just found the relevant box. Mind blown. How is this not more commonly known? Maybe it is and I've just been under a rock but in all my years here I never bloody knew you could do that! Thank you dont!

FallenSky · 18/03/2017 19:27

I was definitely signed in Hugo. Just didn't know about the customise box. Before and after pics. Doesn't take much to excite me on a Saturday night Grin this might be the wine talking

My TIO and watching are not all mixed up? But maybe that's because I've unticked the add to watch box.

If threads in watching displayed deletion posts by MNHQ instead of just disappearing that would stop a lot of placemarking
