Do you not have HQ people on overnight?

Couple of horrid threads today have made me think. Don't you have staff on overnight to deal with reports?

Shocking that you let that thread stand as long as you did HQ. Awful.

I thought the NightWatch was started to help with this? Did you report to them? (There is a special board and they're usually very good).

Has it gone now?

Shinyshoes2 · 14/10/2016 09:04

It's a free site ! I very much doubt MNHQ is open 24-7 .
The powers that be do a sterling job and step in almost always when needed and very quickly too
I don't know what thread you're referrring to but I'm nearly always here from the hours of 8.00am-11.pm and i haven't seen anything like you're referrring to

Ausernotanumber · 14/10/2016 09:05

It's gone now.

I didn't know about the night watch - where do I find that? It's not linked on a post, I did report.

PigletWasPoohsFriend · 14/10/2016 09:06

That particular thread was disgraceful tbh.

DoItTooJulia · 14/10/2016 09:07

I think it's either under other stuff or something in the topics. I'll have a look and try to link. Worth knowing about-I think it's Mumsnetters in opposite time zones that do it as a volunteer favour to avoid this problem.

Ausernotanumber · 14/10/2016 09:07

It was piglet. Truly awful. And I'd reported a daft troll thread in the same board and it went heaps quicker, which has really shocked me. I'd have thought that thread should had been the priority to pfft. And I can't believe I was the only person to report it.

OP posts:
TallulahTheTiger · 14/10/2016 09:22

If it's the man's eye or whatever I also reported - how awful if the individual or his family came across it.

Ausernotanumber · 14/10/2016 09:24

It is tallulah. I thought it was just horrendous.

OP posts:
TallulahTheTiger · 14/10/2016 09:28

Am 'hoping' was a troll or poster was pissed- too much vitriol in their writing.

Ausernotanumber · 14/10/2016 09:32

I'm wondering if there's an argument for locking threads and letting them stay. Because that thread was so awful I think if you hadn't seen it you wouldn't believe it

PortiaCastis · 14/10/2016 09:35

For those who need to know The nightwatch is on Talk then Mumsnet stuff and then the bottom right hand section. Fortunately I missed what sounds like an awful thread. I've reported to nightwatch in the past though as I'm a night owl. They're very good and will reply but you have to start a thread in that section.

RebeccaMumsnet · 14/10/2016 09:37

Morning all,

Thanks for this. We do have some nightwatch volunteers who check in overnight. We don't really like to say our exact hours of work, for one they do vary a fair bit and two, we'd rather not advertise it to the trolls.

Apologies that thread was up for so long, we did zap it as soon as we saw it.

DogsAndWolves · 14/10/2016 09:37

Can someone explain what the thread was about? I assumed it was the missing child one.

Ausernotanumber · 14/10/2016 09:39

Thanks Rebecca. I had assumed that you had night staff. Thanks for the heads up on nightwatch

OP posts:
Owllady · 14/10/2016 09:45

Urgh not another vile thread
When will threads I'm on be fixed too?

Ausernotanumber · 14/10/2016 10:42

It really was horrendous. I only hope none of the gutter press saw it.

OP posts:
SheldonsSpot · 14/10/2016 10:44

I'd have thought a site as big and profitable as this one would employ someone/several people to cover nights rather than relying on volunteers.

MostlyHet · 14/10/2016 10:56

It was horrible. I'm glad to say that pretty much every post I saw before it was zapped said "this is horrible". (I think it was an anti-feminist troll trying to goad people into agreeing with a horrible post, agent-provocateur style, not realising that actually most people would see it for the vileness it was).

Ausernotanumber · 14/10/2016 16:29

It really was awful. I'm surprised there isn't a paid staff memeber on overnight

OP posts:
Ausernotanumber · 16/10/2016 08:27

Just coming back to this because there was another vile horrible thread last night that has just gone. I did report it and whilst I'm very very glad it's gone now, I do think you need some kind of overnight paid staff to deal with awful threads that cause a load of offence to members.

I know it is a free site but you get advertising revenue. And that thread again was awful.

OP posts:
PresidentOliviaMumsnet · 16/10/2016 09:38

Thanks for flagging this

Ausernotanumber · 16/10/2016 09:56

Olivia. I am a bit upset. As I and others reported and they took ages to go. Is there something I'm missing?

OP posts:
AnchorDownDeepBreath · 16/10/2016 10:06

It depends what you mean by missing...

MNHQ reviewed this a few months ago and decided that instead of hiring they'd recruit more volunteers to man the boards at night (the night Watch). It appears they check randomly through the night for reports. If a thread is posted between the checks, it'll remain live regardless of how many reports until the next check.

Now there's an argument that MN is now big enough that it should have regular coverage 24/7, either through new employees or a company that offers coverage, but there's no requirement. Essentially if MNHQ are happy with how things are going in general, it's up to the community to be aware that at nighttime there may be awful things, or to not visit once the night Watch begins. I think that's started to happen a lot more after recent threads.

Ausernotanumber · 16/10/2016 11:36

Thanks Anchor. I guess I'm just surprised, given the size of MN, that there's not an overnight member of staff, paid.
