Banning the term "cis"

OlennasWimple · 06/07/2016 23:36

Apologies if this had already been done, but can MNHQ consider banning the term "cis", given how horrifically offensive so many users of MN find it?

I don't think I need to set out the background and reasoning to this request (but can do so if it would help!)

"True but women have needs and wants why are they not considered.
Sick to the back teeth of being told I should accept a label I don't want."
Absolutely. Me too.

Will pm you now

"Why should it not be used?"
Because it's rude, dismissive and unnecessary

So what? Feminism has ever been considered so. I'm sick of women being tone policed.

Cocolepew · 07/07/2016 19:34

I don't want to be referred to as cis.
We can't say 'just a man in a dress', even though it is actually factual, because its seen as sneery and upsets TW. Fair enough.
So why is women not wanting to be labelled cis any different?

Why are our felings below that of a TW feelings?

I find cis offensive because my husband is a "sissy Crossdresser". He, and the community of like minded friends he has, use the term CIS to describe a born female sex, woman. But to him, a "sissy" is a better version of a cis. Because a sissy is what a real woman should be, a submissive, bird brained sex object.

I am sorry this happened to you. I hope you can get divorced without problems. Flowers

BertrandRussell · 07/07/2016 19:46

I don't want to be "cis" either. And have refused to be on several occasions.

And my point is that the term "cis" can reasonably be considered offensive, confusing and / or derogatory so should not be used at all, except perhaps when applied to oneself. But MNHQ are silent on this wider issue, only being prepared to act when an individual is called "cis" repeatedly against their wishes.

I honestly cannot think of another term of similar stature where this would be the case.

I honestly could not give two shits how my children dress or play with.

If ds wants to wear a bright frilly pink dress and play with a baby and pushchair good for him. It doesn't make him a girl. He is just playing. If he was an adult it would be part of him (though I would wonder why as an adult he felt he needed to wear a dress and play with baby dolls)

Same goes to DD. She loves playing with hot wheel cars. But cars are for boys aren't they? No. cars are just toys.

Tanaqui · 07/07/2016 20:10

Maryz, I agree with everything you posted earlier and it was not transphobic.

Soren appears to refuse to identify as cis so I have no idea why she thinks we can't refuse- unless like Bengal says, it's because we won't use another label instead.

VestalVirgin · 07/07/2016 20:11

So are we allowed to say a woman in trousers?

I don't see why not.

"A woman in trousers is not a man" - perfectly acceptable.
It's just that most women who wear trousers make no attempt to claim that they're male. As such, the word combination is of very limited use.

A "dress" in language as commonly used tends to mean a garment which is tailored to specifically fit a female body. If the same type of garment is tailored to fit a man, we tend to use different words. "Robe", perhaps.

You could say "a woman in men's clothes", but we all know that a woman who shops in the men's section is more likely to be extraordinarly tall or broad shouldered, or just prefer the look. Only very few female-bodied people who wear men's clothes expect to be considered men.

Interestingly, women wear men's clothes for comfort while men wear women's clothes for gender identity (or comedy). Perhaps thinking about the reasons of why that is so would help some people here understand why women do not like "cis".

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2016 20:12

Oooh... so we're all genderqueer, and so are most of our DH/DPs!

If it wasn't for the seriousness of cases like Notwhats, it'd be hilarious.

dementedma · 07/07/2016 20:13

Only see cis on MN and absolutely hate it. I am not a cis woman. I am a woman. Fuck off with your PC appeasing labels.

BertrandRussell · 07/07/2016 20:13

It's almost as if men have only just noticed the gender stereotyping and rigid gender roles women have been banging on about for ages and decided it is a "thing" and hugely over complicated it.......

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2016 20:14

vestal - we wear 'mens clothes' without comment because they are normal. whereas womens clothes are 'other', the garb of the second sex.

Fishcake72 · 07/07/2016 20:16

I don't like it. It pisses me off. I'm a girl, end of.

Fluffy24 · 07/07/2016 20:16

Please please can we ban 'moist' while we're at it?

NeedACleverNN · 07/07/2016 20:17

Ah see I like moist

It's a very onomatopoeic word isn't it?

Mooooooist

BertrandRussell · 07/07/2016 20:17

Absolutely Errol. Just as there aren't any unisex names- there are male names that are used for girls and are very quickly dropped for boys because they become seen as girl's names

hazeyjane · 07/07/2016 20:19

'Moist cis' is pretty fucking heinous isn't it.
