Banning the term "cis"

OlennasWimple · 06/07/2016 23:36

Apologies if this had already been done, but can MNHQ consider banning the term "cis", given how horrifically offensive so many users of MN find it?

I don't think I need to set out the background and reasoning to this request (but can do so if it would help!)

Wonderful post, OurBlanche.

SorenaJ · 07/07/2016 15:17

merrymouse Yeah, I see your point, people are free to identify however they want to identify, I don't identify as cis either.

CoteDAzur "gender bullshit" is not meant for cis people, it is meant for gender non-conforming people in order for them to describe their gender identity and to find other people who identify in the same way. But yes, no one should have to be assigned a gender they do not identify as.

TheCountess you don't know the complications of being non-bi art whatever, if you're not. They might wish to present in a certain way, or to medically transition if they suffer from body dysphoria. Constantly being misgender end, not being able to choose your gender identity. So a woman is not worse than being non-binary. I would argue that it depends on the culture.

SorenaJ · 07/07/2016 15:20

Yeah, I like my definition better, because it doesn't hurt a sh*tton of people.

PortiaCastis · 07/07/2016 15:21

Brilliant post OurBlanche

PortiaCastis · 07/07/2016 15:23

Cis is hurtful to me and no doubt many others

SorenaJ · 07/07/2016 15:23

merrymouse I agree, people who choose not to identify as any gender are not cis. And I understand the binarying of gender and it's stupid. I am neither cis or trans, no one needs to identify as either.

Someone who doesn't identify with a gender is agender.

So when people refer to a collective (lets say women) as cis, there is no way of knowing That they are cis, so you are misgendering a really large group of people. Because the vast majority of women don't identify, they are Agender as you put it. I take it in the transactivists world misgendering is a massive no no.

So why is it so hard for you to see why lots of women don't like it.

When talkingbout trans women and women, the only thing women have in common, is our biology, because we all fall under different titles, cis Agender etc

sorena but that's really just creating a little fantasy world full of made up terms.
The reality is that there are 2 sexes - male/female, producing boys/men and girls/women. That is scientific fact.
What is so hurtful to a 'sh*tton' of people about accepting biological reality? It's kind of like putting your fingers in your ears every time someone says something you don't like.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 07/07/2016 15:26

Yeah, I like my definition better, because it doesn't hurt a shtton of people.*

Biology is just biology. It's objective. The definitions of woman and female are what they are. Hurting people doesn't come into it.

Can you hear how ridiculous your point sounds?

noeffingidea · 07/07/2016 15:28

Sorry, I should have added intersex to male/female.

SorenaJ · 07/07/2016 15:28

CoteDAzur obviously I know what sex I am Hmm and yes, I identify as gender critical, and I think that's a very healthy thing to be.

BengalCatMum Agenderfluid, for me, means that I'm mainly agender, I don't have a gender, and I'm very not 'gendered' but occasionally I feel 'gendered' that could be man, woman, non-binary, bigender whatever.

You don't have to identify with cis. It's just a word to describe a person who was born the gender they identify with. It's not a label intended to do anything else. Heterosexual is similar.

I think people are also missing the point that this is not an attack on women, as the term is not gender specific.

I do agree that it would be much more human of us to simply refer to each other as women and men, regardless of what gender we were born with.

Who gets to rename women? Cassells Latin Dictionary says cis means 'on this side' in reference to time and place. WOmen did not apply this inappropriate term to themselves. Cassells says 'trans' means 'on the other side / over/ across' also used in reference to place. Who assumed the right to rename women?

noeffingidea · 07/07/2016 15:37

panda no one is born with a 'gender'.

Somerville · 07/07/2016 15:38

You don't have to identify with cis. It's just a word to describe a person who was born the gender they identify with.

The point has been made on this thread, Double, over and over, that many women, including me, do not identify as a gender. I am biologically a woman. I don't identify as anything but me.

Telling me that I was born the gender I identify as doesn't make it true. And doesn't mean you can force a label on me that says so.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/07/2016 15:38

Star Ourblanche.

I think soren may have been responding to my definition of woman. The whole concept of gender is massively harmful to many, many people, and unlike biology it's an unecessary construct.

Can someone tell me what's the correct term for a person who rejects genderizing (and all terminology deriving from it) please?

noeffingidea · 07/07/2016 15:45

Errol I don't know. Make one up! That seems to be the way to do things.Smile

Let's make some up, Errol

Antigen Grin
Extragen
Exgender
Contragen
Ungendered
Abgender
Allogender
Disgendered

.... You know what? I don't want a gender descriptor, not even one that says I don't want one.

Because I'll still be afflicted by 'female gender' strictures, on account of my female body.
