Hey MNHQ. Would it be possible to have a discussion about how SN issues/threads are handled on the main boards.

I know you are fire fighting a bit and I'm not trying to stir things up.

I just think that there are endless threads that require you to get involved and try to (for the sake of a better word) mediate between pissed of posters with no real experience of SN/disability and pissed off member of the SN/disability community.

I think you try really really hard to be fair and even handed. It's an understandable response but I have growing doubts about it.
There have been half a dozen threads recently where posters I recognise as living with SN/disability issues deal with a continuous stream of posts from any random who pops up on a thread making the same stupid, ill informed or frankly goady post.
It's like swimming through a tidal wave of shit.
Then, as posters get increasingly exasperated by each arriving poster saying 'well I'm not putting my buggy away if my baby is asleep' or 'why can't I use the disabled toilet if it's empty' or 'but people with SN can be violent. I know of stabbing someone and attacks all the time' they get rude and the thread descends into eurrgh.

I'm still reading constant posts where anyone affected by disability is berated if they are angry, the message being 'be nice, be grateful or we don't have to be fair'

It seems to me that the status quo of 'fairness' is simply unfair.
Posters already dealing with immense difficulty shouldn't be forced to defend themselves against every person who turns up and says unpleasant things under the umbrella of debate. You said a long time ago it was not our responsibility to educate but the reality is that, with no palpable support from you guys, we are endlessly having to educate.

I am not pretending to have the answer but is it possible to contemplate methods by which you could actually say to posters saying 'if someone in a wheelchair can't use their space because I'm not putting my buggy away' that their comments are wrong and not in the spirit of the site?

You link to the This Is My Child campaign but the posters who are the problem won't care and won't read it.

I don't know - I just wonder if you could think about this.
Sometimes there are not two sides to a debate because only one side is directly affected, exhausted, distressed and having their lives and their children's lives made harder.

In 10 years it's never been a priority, Miffle.
Hence why accusations of disablism.
You watch, we'll get a few platitudes, a pat on the head but nothing will really change.

Baconyum · 14/06/2016 18:49

'I know it's not the mumsnet way (and I'm not sure I want it) but you know how facebook has the like button mumsnets equivalent would be goady, offensive, disabilist, sexist etc flags all around a post so it'd light up like a Christmas tree.'

I like that idea especially if posters could pretty much immediately SEE that other posters have reported. Although it might encourage the goadies...tricky!

As for mnhq reluctant to change guidelines etc yes that's true (and doesn't just apply to disablism). What bugs me is not sticking to the guidelines they've drawn up!

MiffleTheIntrovert · 14/06/2016 19:07

This thread was started two days ago and there has been very very little input or response from MNHQ (although they did a great deletion message yday on the teacher thread).

To demonstrate the point, the posts of username blah blah having a very obvious disablist agenda were deleted, but posts like this are allowed to stay up. How the fuck are those of us with DC with SN, or disabilities ourselves meant to feel either welcome or valued as Mners (some of us very long term) when posters/comments like this, and this poster has form, are deemed acceptable and allowed to remain?

Ok, everyone, if you don't have SN, if you don't know anyone with SN, if you're not in a wheelchair or don't know anyone in a wheelchair, do not comment. Your points are invalid, unwelcome, and will be immeadiately pissed on, shot down, belittled, condescendingly commented on, patronised and laughed at. It's just not worth it.

@MiffleTheIntrovert

There's mention upthread of fire fighting - and we're at it again today due to a tech issue we are running behind on reports. Rest assured this is absolutely on our agenda, and our apols for any tardiness
Thx

Baconyum · 14/06/2016 19:59

I reported that post on 13/6/16 at 1058hrs. Over 2 days after it was written it's STILL there. And I'm heartily sick of the 'too busy' excuse.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 14/06/2016 20:09

Yes I reported it too, but was just told it would be discussed at meeting.

Baconyum · 14/06/2016 20:12

I've been told same.

SauvignonBlanche · 14/06/2016 20:29

Late back to the thread sorry, have been dabbling in RL. Blush

Just wanted to add that I loved the deletion message, would be grateful to see more disabilist individual posts deleted.

bialystockandbloom · 14/06/2016 20:37

Which post?

Samcro · 14/06/2016 22:21

will moan here, but seems every one is so happy with mn hqs latest deletion message.
irks me that after all the sodding wheelchair on busses threads they mention twin buggies for busses.

I assumed they meant a foldable one

MiffleTheIntrovert · 15/06/2016 07:34

Well given that the wheelchair v buggy appeal is in the headlines again today, I think that the chances of people making twattish disablist comments is high, especially given the latest MN exposure in the Daily Mail. Disablist comments with multiple reports are still up.

I think that until addressing the issue comes to the top of the MN agenda, I shall refrain from posting at all. It doesn't feel like a pleasant environment here at the moment, sadly (apart from the lovely Brigade of course).

Hopefully this problem will be addressed soon and people with disabilities or DC with SN will feel welcome again.

BishopBrennansArse · 15/06/2016 08:01

Miffle I think that's the wrong approach.
MNHQ will be hoping this dies down. We need to keep agitating.

NotCitrus · 15/06/2016 09:52

Given there's a few thread topics that usually lead to disability comments, couldn't MNHQ have an automatic alert to flag up posts with say pushchair+wheelchair in the OP, or wheelchair+bus, etc?

Followed by posting a FAQ explaining why wheelchair users should always get priority on a bus even if a baby is sleeping in a buggy and you have a disability that prevents you folding a pushchair, even if it turns out that the law doesn't yet require this?

Samcro · 15/06/2016 10:13

fanjo but why mention it at all? (not having a pop)
after the countless threads full of the I won't fold brigade making a joke about it seems in poor taste. tbh it shows how little they notice

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/06/2016 10:22

I assumed they were being misguidedly helpful. Maybe I am naive though :)

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/06/2016 11:39

I see that poster mentioned a few posts back is still making goady posts about disability on another thread.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/06/2016 11:44

So would have to agree there isn't much being done about this issue.

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/06/2016 11:51

Original post just zapped but surely there is a depeer issue with a poster if they keep making such comments.

Jasonandyawegunorts · 15/06/2016 12:06

who is it?
What if we bombard MNHQ with reports?

BeyondTellsEveryoneRealFacts · 15/06/2016 12:06

I saw the latest bus thread but have been away for a few days so missed the zipwire (?) one.

I definitely second the option for more detailed reporting. Perhaps general and spam as we have now, but with an additional option for hate speech that 'pings' as higher priority at hq? And i like the idea of knowing when a post has been reported too, though i think i remember that being discussed before?

fanjoforthemammaries7850 · 15/06/2016 12:33

Is gone, better response.

PirateJones · 15/06/2016 12:41

Nappies at school threads are sure fire Troll threads that absolutely get on my tits. Every time the Daily mail print a "Nappies on older children" story we get threads with disablist posters saying how SEN children should be allowed in main stream school.

Samcro · 15/06/2016 12:46

the annoying thing fanjo is that that poster wasn't banned,
they will be in the end, but it won't be cos they are disablist
