Further update to Talk font

Hi folks,
Following a further round of user testing we are going to make another slight adjustment to the font on desktop Talk (no change to mobile). We are using Roboto font. It was size 14px and weight of 300. We’re going to increase it slightly to 15px and weight of 400 to make it slightly more readable. Plus we are very slightly increasing the line to make it feel just a little less cramped.

Obviously any change takes a wee while to get used to - and we're sorry to inflict more on you - but hopefully you'll get used to it very quickly and agree with the majority of testers that it's an improvement overall.

Do let us know if you have any problems - should be released in the next wee while.

I like the message box text being bigger, it is much easier to check and proof read as you type.

BertPuttocks · 17/05/2016 20:57

I really like the new font.

It's much easier for me to read.

nemno · 17/05/2016 22:27

The relief when I saw this font and could easily read the text surprised me. I clearly had been struggling more than I thought . I thought I had got used to it but this is so much better. Thank you.

notagroattomyname · 18/05/2016 07:06

Is that what's responsible for the excessive spacing between thread titles on the topic pages? It's not enhancing my reading experience - I can only see about two-thirds of the number of thread titles I used to be able to see on one screen, maybe less. It's harder to scan the threads, and the amount of extra scrolling required is enough to make me not bother going to the bottom of the page.

I'm using a mouse, not a big fat finger that needs lots of space to target things. Can't you give us a customisation option to let us non-touchscreen Luddites switch back to a smaller font & thread title format?

JessicaMumsnet · 18/05/2016 09:18

OurBlanche we'll do our best, we wanted to get the font better for most people first but we're keen to keep improving.

triathlon sorry to hear it's not right for you, can you let us know what browser you are using and what computer, a screenshot would be great too - just so we can check what you're are seeing is what we intended.

notagroattomyname yes we've increased the line height on desktop (no change on mobile). We understand it does mean more scrolling but it also allows better legibility for some folk because the font is less cramped. We're sorry it's impairing your mumsnetting though.

Thanks to all who commented to say it's better for them that's excellent news! Grin

Just to update, we've identified an issue with the font in the message box and we'll work on that asap.

LocalEditorDevon · 18/05/2016 09:25

Umm nothing has changed. What is everyone looking at? I'm confused Confused

specialsubject · 18/05/2016 11:33

argh! I thought you'd put it back to the previous version, before the one that was so annoying. It looked good then - we did say that there was no need to change anything.

now it is in Fisher-Price giant text again and harder to read.

time to switch the font changer back on.

JessicaMumsnet · 18/05/2016 13:49

Hello all,
Tech have released a fix for Threads I'm on and Threads I'm watching and the font in the message box has been corrected too.
Thanks all for your feedback, we're still considering whether to change the username so if anyone else has thoughts on that please let us know.
Thanks

wombattoo · 18/05/2016 18:08

It looks like the user names have been increased. Much better thank you.

zen1 · 18/05/2016 18:18

I am using Safari on an iPad and just wanted to say I'm finding my experience of reading so much better since you've made the most recent changes. I did the survey and liked the test site apart from the tiny user names, but I see even they have been amended on the live site now. The only thing that remains eye-squintingly small is the thread titles in 'threads I'm watching'.

BoreOfWhabylon · 18/05/2016 18:38

Thanks Jessica that's MUCH better now Flowers

(ipad, safari, desktop)

AugustaFinkNottle · 18/05/2016 22:41

The subject headings on Threads I'm On are now far too small.

Samcro · 18/05/2016 23:00

I use chrome on my Mac and its bad....I have avoided going on mn cos its so bad.

SilverBirchWithout · 19/05/2016 00:21

Text seems to have become smaller again?

JessicaMumsnet · 19/05/2016 13:56

Hi SilverBirchWithout, are you still having a problem?
If so would you mind letting us know the browser and computer you are using so we can try to replicate the issue? Thanks

SilverBirchWithout · 19/05/2016 18:06

Yes it's still small.
I'm on Safari.

ThatsMyStapler · 19/05/2016 21:20

text is to BIG!!!!! i have to change the zoom on my pc as its horrible

BoatyMcBoat · 19/05/2016 23:11

I have the same problem as zen and Augusta. Thread titles on I'm On are tiny.

IPad, Safari. Up to date software.

JessicaMumsnet · 20/05/2016 09:41

Thanks both, would you mind posting a screenshot?

BoatyMcBoat · 21/05/2016 11:51

I would prefer the posts to be smaller and the titles to be larger, btw Wink The topic titles are fine as they are...

BlackeyedSusan · 22/05/2016 18:44

a lot better than the last change. no longer wanting to puke when reading mumsnet.

triathlon · 23/05/2016 08:18

It's good now!

I vote for keeping it like this.

SilverBirchWithout · 23/05/2016 23:42

I guess I am a lone voice here saying the body of posts for me is still much smaller than when it first changed last week?

Posters names are now appearing marginally bigger than than the post itself. Is this just an issue for me using Safari on IPad?

I will endeavour to find out how to get a screenshot.
