Can we have a topic where name changing is not allowed?

Lots of people feel the 'atmosphere' has been somewhat lost, due to MN becoming so big and so many people name changing for dubious reasons.

So how about a new topic where name changing is not allowed?

So to post in that section, you choose a different name (much like in Mumsnet local). But you have to stick to that name only.

That way, in that section at least, there would be less arses/goady fuckers/Billy bullshitters and drama llamas, hiding behind name changes.

People will become 'regulars' again (in that section at least) and when you go there to chat, you'll at least 'recognise' other people.

OK I'm sure there are 1 million reasons why this is a stupid idea/impossible to set up, but can anyone think of them? Grin

I don't really think anyone has said it SHOULD be banned across the board, anyway. Just thinking about why we have it, what it would be like without it, why it's not limited, and obviously the main issue of asking for a corner of the board where it's restricted.

But yeah, I agree that the perception that MN is some safe little bubble is naive. It may be "anonymous" but for every thread you start about your sensitive issue, thinking you're getting support from 20 odd or so users, hundreds are reading it. It's on Google. It may even appear on TV or in a newspaper.

fidel1ne · 31/12/2015 23:26

There's a very good example of what I'm saying in 'Trending' right now. Really tragic.

But it's probably inevitable in such a big site that even regulars would experience, use and describe MN in 1000 different ways.

Wasn't mn founded because of a few mums wishing they had someone to talk to in the middle of the night, sort of thing? Wasn't that whole point in the first place?

WorraLiberty · 01/01/2016 14:08

I have no problem with the reasons why most people name change.

I do however have a problem with the blatant abuse of the name change function.

Too many people name change to simply goad, or start a controversial thread and then slip back into their nicey nicey 'regular name', where I expect everyone thinks they're simply lovely.

I also agree with Usual's earlier point that parenting help often gets lost amongst the smug bastard type posts. I have a feeling if those people didn't name change, there would be a lot less "My DC have never even seen a Big Mac", because someone would doubtless point out that they'd posted last month about taking the kids to McDonalds.

So having a non NC-ing topic might sort the smug bullshitters from the honest, helpful posters.

No. As I recall it was after a holiday in Florida when Justine thought how great it would have been to have been able to get tips/reviews from other parents. Something like that anyway. The chat side took over though.

magimedi · 01/01/2016 15:40

I've caught up since yesterday - phew.

I can now see why some people need more than a couple of name changes, thanks to MrsHathaway's post.

But I'd still like to have a section where there was no name changing at all.

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2016 15:47

I think posters meeting MrsH's example would be a bit few and far between.

I thought MN was invented because of something to do with a rubbish holiday too. They had no idea they were inventing a monster. Grin

magimedi · 01/01/2016 15:53

I was being reasonable & nice, Sparkling.

Also thought it was invented owing to crap holiday Justine took.

Happy New Year. I am hungry & all the festive nibbles are gone - I've got far too used to having cheesey snacks & crisps available!

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2016 16:25

I just went for 'realistic'. Grin

We have some manky brie left and I have one of those plastic things of nibbles with all the different sections and shapes. I have put the unopened alcohol and 3 tins of biscuits in the loft.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2016 16:40

We don't have a loft so DD2 and I are eating the rest of the Christmas chocolates and watching Twilight. I am never drinking again after last night.

Just looking a pizza, heaven

magimedi · 01/01/2016 16:49

Can Hearts have the 2016 award for fib of the year, already? Grin

Sparklingbrook · 01/01/2016 16:57

usual I have not been too bad with heartburn this year. I am usually on the Gaviscon by Boxing Day.

HeartsTrumpDiamonds · 01/01/2016 17:06

Already Grin

I am such a lightweight I was plastered on 3 glasses of champers.

Ginslinger · 01/01/2016 17:53

i didn't drink because I was driving

it was pretty good really apart from the boring drunks.

Fairenuff · 01/01/2016 17:58

Yeah I remember now, the holiday thing. But the point is that she wanted to reach out to others at any time, night or day and that is still, I think, the backbone of the site.

But I can't for the life of me think of how this was relevant to the discussion at the time or what point I was trying to make Grin

Christinayangstwistedsista · 01/01/2016 18:21

I had some chocolate orange segments with that gritty popping candy in. Bleurgh.

I did eat a whole box of mint Matchmakers one one day but there were hardly any in the box TBF.
