Shortly after I got a "you are on the list" email, my Tesco account got hacked; anyone else?

I assume you use the same email for both this and Tesco? Do you use the same or similar password? Maybe it's just a coincidence? Flowers

Arion · 21/08/2015 21:50

I wasn't on the list (I don't think, happy to be corrected if I'm wrong) but someone tried to access my pocket gems forum account yesterday (had an email notifying me of 5 incorrect password attempts). Same email address as my email for here.

WhyBeHappyWhenYouCouldBeNormal · 21/08/2015 21:57

How did you notice the tesco hack Nice?

Tesco had this problem again about two years ago. Their passwords were unencrypted they were all over the news... I assume nothing much has changed
Yes how did you notice?

Highlandbird · 21/08/2015 22:02

Following as something weird happening with my tesco account this evening as well....how do you know if you've been hacked?!

WhyBeHappyWhenYouCouldBeNormal · 21/08/2015 22:13

Is Jeff hungry or something? Should we tell him about the food banks?

vindscreenviper · 21/08/2015 22:13

Is Jeffrey knicking Tesco points now? What next fraudulent free cuppas from Waitrose Confused

VivaLeBeaver · 21/08/2015 22:16

Was your password the same? Were you on the list with email address or mn username?

RebeccaMumsnet · 21/08/2015 22:24

Hi Nice,

Can you mail [email protected] and let us know if it was the same passwords as your MN account and we can pass to the police.

So sorry this has happened.

DoFliesHaveKnees · 21/08/2015 22:28

My Tesco account was hacked on Monday, they tried to spend £1052 but as the postcodes didn't match, it flagged up. I got a phone call from Tesco direct confirming my purchase which they cancelled and advised me to call my bank.
When I did this, I was informed that someone had taken £550 from our account through caxtonfx which is a money transfer type company. The fraud dept is dealing with this at the moment and I've had to get a new bank card.
Today, my Pinterest account has been put into safe mode to protect my pins, very bizarre, bet they were disappointed when they looked through them ????
Would be very surprised if all this happening was a coincidence to be honest!!

WhyBeHappyWhenYouCouldBeNormal · 21/08/2015 22:30

oh gosh DoFlies- what a week! Dare I say, were you on the list?

Simurgh · 21/08/2015 22:33

Poor you DoFlies. Was it the same email and password?

DoFliesHaveKnees · 21/08/2015 22:34

I did check the list, but I wasn't on it. I can only remember having 2 usernames on here and none of them are on the list we found. Unless there is another list......

DoFliesHaveKnees · 21/08/2015 22:36

Definitely the same email address, probably the same password to be honest!!

Simurgh · 21/08/2015 22:38

The good practice that has been recommended is just general good practice, DoFlies. I think I would act as if you were on the list and ensure good passwords and password separation on all your accounts. It will do no harm and could do you some good in the future.

vindscreenviper · 21/08/2015 22:39

Sorry for being so flippant upthread.

Did you sign into MN with your email rather than your nn? Some people on another thread think that the hacker may have also phished logins with emails but not be letting on about it, and using or passing on those details.

Simurgh · 21/08/2015 22:40

In my experience, nearly all problems - bar this current one - are caused by phishing, generally by emails. You'll need to stay alert to that as well as changing account passwords etc.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 21/08/2015 22:41

My Tesco account was hacked a few weeks ago, but there was an attempt from somewhere in China to access my Facebook on Thursday night.

It's making me nervous but I'm sure these were all unconnected.

For those asking how we knew - I had an email saying that I had requested to change my Tesco password. I hadn't made that request. When I phoned Tesco, my email address connected to the account had been changed (subtly - from .com to .co.uk).

Simurgh · 21/08/2015 22:45

Are the police dealing with it, Much?

DoFliesHaveKnees · 21/08/2015 22:51

I laughed at my Mum the other day when she took out her wee notebook to get her password for something as everything she logs into online has a different password.
Guess she has the right idea :)

tigerscameatnight · 21/08/2015 22:53

can't get in mine either. no cards listed so purely my address and club card points

Simurgh · 21/08/2015 23:07

I remember the comment from Jeffrey's acolytes when it was learned that MN was forcing a password change. Short and unrepeatable.

At least she's keeping good password separation, DoFlies.

NiceAcorns · 21/08/2015 23:07

I got an email from Tesco thanking me for updating my details - I rang them and the email address, delivery address etc had all been changed

It was right after the MN hack, I think

Same email address, not sure if it was the same password - quite possible.

Will email MN in the morning

Do it now, Nice. I expect they'll still have people working on this business. Wink
