In the interest of restoring harmony, do you think it's time to tidy up the political threads?

As a rule I generally don't care where people choose to post.

But since Chat and AIBU are riddled with political threads that tend to start the mother of all bun fights, does anyone think HQ should move them to the Politics topic now?

This way, if people still want to post on them they can, but peace and harmony might be restored to the rest of MN?

It's doing a lot of people's heads in. Even some of the posters on those threads are probably sick of getting drawn into them, but it's hard not to when there's so much goading going on.

What sort are you Honey ?

I've always liked you enormously.

WorraLiberty · 09/05/2015 17:16

But traditionally whenever a thread is moved to the correct topic, it dies on its arse Grin

I've just looked at the first page of AIBU and first page of chat and counted over 30 threads about the Election result.

They all have the same themes and I agree with Worra that there is a lot of goading going on on both sides plus competitive over - reaction and some really very unpleasant abuse.

Put it all in one place. MN is not usually the place it has become over the last few days and I think it's making a lot of people upset and very uncomfortable.

fortunately · 09/05/2015 17:22

Absolutely agree with you. As an expat it's annoying having to wade through all the election stuff to find something mildly diverting.

However I am interested in Playmobilton - was Norman returned victorious? I missed it...

HoneyDragon · 09/05/2015 17:26

Exit I'm one of them capitalist bastard but with ethics and morals. It's a bit tricky.

catzpyjamas · 09/05/2015 17:29

I would be very grateful if the political threads be either put into Politics or at the very least, hidden from Active. I understand that the GE is hugely significant but I would quite like not to have all this vitriol in my face every time I click on MN.

SwedishEdith · 09/05/2015 17:41

It'll all die out in a few days. I've posted on a few post-mortem threads and they've all been very civilised. It's fairly easy to spot the ones that are likely to be nasty from the title so I'm just not opening them. But, I like discussions about leadership and what went wrong/right and what might happen next and no-one has been nasty of any of those threads (that I've actually read).

IndosaSamosa · 09/05/2015 18:08

Nobody can really use the Politics topic cause of claig and Isitmebut, let's be honest!

I'd say just hide AIBU for a few days. It'll die down.

FuckingLiability · 09/05/2015 18:32

Oh, Christ, please just put all the election threads in Political. My hide button is nearly worn out and still they keep appearing.

I never normally complain about this stuff, but all the goadyness and self-righteous indignation is getting very tiresome.

EmmanuelleMumsnet · 09/05/2015 19:01

Hi there,

Just wanted to drop in to say we have seen this and will look into what to do - but in the meantime, please do report anything at all you see that breaches our Talk guidelines, and keep on hiding threads that you don't want to see and that are getting in your way.

Hopefully things will calm down soon... [optimistic face]

catzpyjamas · 09/05/2015 19:47

HoneyDragon, that's the best kind of capitalist to be Smile

Stitchintime1 · 09/05/2015 19:49

The poliical threads are very silly. Both sides are being ridiculous. I'm thinking of hiding all of them.

Stitchintime1 · 09/05/2015 19:49

Including this one!

noddyholder · 09/05/2015 19:50

Politics is messy I think leave it to fizzle out

RufusTheReindeer · 09/05/2015 19:56

Maybe next time we could have a temporary "election" thread

A month before and a month after and then deleted

MN is not a nice place at the moment...and I love a good bunfight

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 09/05/2015 20:31

Totally agree, political discussion is one thing but this is something else entirely. I don't mind lots of threads on topical issues, that's to be expected and I'm usually happy for them to be left where they are. But this is ridiculus. They were appearing as fast as I could hide them last night, many threads almost duplicates of pre-existing ones.

NM looks civilised because I suspect they've made liberal use of the big red delete button and the ban hammer. Deleted posts on NM don't have the 'message deleted' message so you can't see that any messages have been deleted which will make it look a bit more civilised. Anybody racking up too many deletions for personal attacks may well have ended up with a temporary ban.

WorraLiberty · 09/05/2015 21:16

Thanks Emmanuelle

Emmanuelle - Thanks for the reply but it's the same anodyne reply yet again & nothing gets done. I suspect you've been told to give that reply but I'd like to hear from Justine on this thread at some point.

Telling us to 'report' (and I do) is just not going to sort things out now.

magimedi · 12/05/2015 22:15

I know it's all over & fish 'n' chip wrappings now, but I'd still like to hear the reasons for the lack of intervention.

IKnowIAmButWhatAreYou · 13/05/2015 17:49

MNHQ need to be Proactive rather than Reactive or it's not going to work.

Many, many forums are quite strictly moderated with regards to the categories for topics, whereas on MN unless you "Report" nothing seems to happen.

If I go in Chat or, God forbid, AIBU I honestly don't want to see political thread after political thread getting in the way of the interesting stuff - same as I wouldn't if I went into the Doghouse....

There's obviously enough interest in Politics for those that want to partake so why not make sure they're having their bunfights over there?

PausingFlatly · 13/05/2015 18:12

Honey, you're one of the lovely posters on MN.

I've always thought capitalist bastard with ethics and morals is the epitome of MN. A perfect description of our Glorious Leader, in fact.Grin

ClashCityRocker · 13/05/2015 18:49

I know on other forums there is a facility to merge threads.

I know people want to rant - and it's great people are engaged in politics but surely one 'why did you vote Tory' and one 'I'm worried about the government' and one 'labour voters have sour grapes' thread would suffice?

RebeccaMumsnet · 14/05/2015 14:11

Hi all,

Thanks for the thread and we do hear you.
It's been busy here behind the report button, thanks all for alerting us to the GFers, please keep 'em coming.

MN has always been a self-policing forum in the sense that MNetters report and we will take a look. We do not sit and refresh active looking for trouble, we rely on all of you to spot knobs GFers and report. As for political threads, we are and have been moving them and also zapping threads that have purely been started to deliberately inflamed.

We know we sound like a stuck record but we need the reports from all of you and threads like this so we can hear your thoughts.

As others have said, we can't stop political talk, allowing conversation to flow is one of the things that makes MN unique. However, we do draw the line at nasty personal attacks, gfers constantly on the wind-up and threads that are just beyond the pale. Please, please do report.

This week we have moved several threads into politics and we will continue to do so. We'll gladly listen to any other suggestions that you think may help.

Honey you are always welcome round these parts
