Season's (well nearly) greetings, and welcome to the MUMSNET SECRET SANTA 2014!

Sleepy reindeer are waking, Christmas elves are busy mulling wine, and we at MNHQ - and you lovely lot - need to get cracking. Yes, we know it's only October, but the Mumsnet Secret Santa waits for no one

For those of you who are new to our seasonal spreading of goodwill, the idea is that Mumsnetters nominate fellow Mumsnetters whom they feel particularly deserve some festive cheer to receive an anonymous Christmas present. We also open a thread asking for gift donations, and match these to the nominees as part of a HUGE anonymous Secret Santa operation. For more on how the whole thing works (clue: as smoothly as a rocket-powered sleigh), take a look here.

This Christmas tradition was a scheme cooked up by Mumsnetters themselves, and it has thrived over the years due to their generosity (you can find out more on how it came about over here). It generally goes without any major hitches , but there are just a few rules and regs which it's worth brushing up on.

And now, to business. The nominations page is live, and you can add your nominee's name at any time from now until 29th October, when the page will close. We'll then drop all nominees a line to ask for their addresses, the ages/sex of their DC, if they have them, and any further family details they're happy to share with us and their donor. This information needs to be with us by 7th November.

The donations thread is also live, so please pop on and let us know if you'd like to make someone's Christmas a little bit more special by showing them that they're in your thoughts. In terms of what to donate, we love vouchers because they're easy to match, but we're delighted with all sorts. Remember, nothing is too small, and please don't worry if you're thinking of donating a gift with a low cash value, because money is really not what this is about.

We thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your awesome generosity. You amaze us every year.

It's all now in your capables, but if you have any queries we're happy to hear from you at [email protected].

'And the bells were ringing out for Christmas day.'

You don't have to nominate someone daisychain - just if you want to.

Smile
daisychain01 · 14/10/2014 17:57

Thanks cozie, I didnt want to mess up the system Smile

Im happy to just give the gift, and maybe next year I will have had more opportunities to connect more directly.

Thanks again!

daisychain01 · 14/10/2014 17:59

Actually I just remembered that I do have someone After all, hey its amazing the friends we make on MN!

xalyssx · 14/10/2014 18:23

I can't remember my nominee's current nickname, but I can remember their old one. Is that okay to use?

RatherBeOnThePiste · 14/10/2014 18:31

Well I'm OBVIOUSLY in, I bloody LOVE Christmas!

Have both nominated and donated. A real pleasure to do both.

Season's (well nearly) greetings, and welcome to the MUMSNET SECRET SANTA 2014!
Prelude · 14/10/2014 18:32

That might not work if they have flounced deregged between name changes, but HQ could look up the IP for you I suppose.

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/10/2014 18:49

I haven't nominated anyone I 'know' from here - just a few posters who I think deserve a Christmas surprise. Either because I think they are always so kind and lovely or give great advice or... other reasons Grin

BlotOnTheLandscape · 14/10/2014 18:58

What happens when people are nominated?

BoreOfWhabylon · 14/10/2014 19:09

They are 'matched' with a donor and get a Christmas gift from the donor. It's all carefully done so that the donor doesn't know who they are giving to and the donee doesn,t know who sent them the gift. That's the beauty of it!

Say, I'd nominated someone who I knew had small children, I'd mention this when nominating. Then someone else offers to donate a gift suitable for small children and Mumsnet matches the two up.

ThreeQuartersEmpty · 14/10/2014 19:17

The donor is given a reference number like MN001 to put on the parcel they post to an address they are given. No names. Parcel addressed to The Mumsnetter of the House.

The recipient is told to look out for the reference.

A thread is started where MN001 posts to say thanks etc....

And that's when everyone starts to cry.

It's lovely.

daisychain01 · 14/10/2014 19:18

Dont MNHQ get all the nice jobs! I wish I could do that for a living, nice.

Aw, what a lovely idea. I'm happy to donate. I've not been here long enough to nominate but it's an amazing idea!

skyeskyeskye · 14/10/2014 19:25

nominated and donated

PioneersAndPirateShips · 14/10/2014 19:35

When you put your nomination message, does the person you nominated see that or that it was you who nominated them?

ThreeQuartersEmpty · 14/10/2014 19:38

No pioneers. Neither of those.

SauvignonBlanche · 14/10/2014 19:38

No, it's anonymous.

PioneersAndPirateShips · 14/10/2014 19:41

That's good, thanks!

TripTrapTripTrapOverTheBridge · 14/10/2014 20:27

That's good to know! Nomination and donation done Smile

RebeccaMumsnet · 14/10/2014 20:28

@xalyssx

I can't remember my nominee's current nickname, but I can remember their old one. Is that okay to use?

YY xalyssx, we will find them under any name they have used old or new, so nominate away.

The number of nominations doesn't matter, some people get several and others just one, if there are enough donations everyone will get something. Xmas Grin

ponygirlcurtis · 14/10/2014 20:43
