something ought to be done about her derailing of a thread that was supporting a grieving woman.

Many of us reported last night, the user is still at it.

I think it depends on how the site is run. I post on a music forum and if the a poster is banned everything goes. However it's a very small , specialised community with a very hands on webmaster and a few trusty lieutenants to deal with this sort of thing.

I really did wonder about my namesake. There was no reason for taking my former name and adding another "7" other than to cause trouble. I did vaguely wonder about contacting HQ last Saturday when she started it(her posts were innocuous at first) but I thought they will think I'm some sort of crybaby.

Maryz She also chose to post the nasty comments on a part of the forum I'm never on so I had no opportunity to defend myself. I'm very grateful to those who spoke up.

That was my assumption too. Mary

different, they aren't paid Yes, I do know that volunteer means you don't get paid!

Why should they wade through a 500 post thread and have to make the call on whether to delete it or not? Why shouldn't they? They have a responsibility. they chose to take on that responsibility. They deleted a thread about the poster within minutes of it appearing! She hasn't posted prolifically, so it wouldn't have taken wading through 500 posts to find the thread she was trolling on.

differentnameforthis · 13/06/2014 13:36

They have been told they can hide threads if they are unsure & MN will make the call as to what to do about it.

They could have done that!

If I was a member of night watch I wouldn't have deleted Caitlin177 posts either and I would have deleted the posts started against her.

Not because I agree with what she said but because a personal attack is very easy to obviously delete and starting a thread about someone is obviously an attack when you call her a cunt in the opening post Grin

She started by only being slightly goady with poor phrasing and only when folk (rightly) jumped on her did she become very defensive and ruder - but none of it was a direct attack by her to the original OP. It really only warranted deletion when the whole thread became derailed about her original poor phrasing, slight goadiness, and the massive argument when people pulled her up on it.

I am a moderator on another forum. It is unpaid though we get a gift at Christmas.

To avoid personal squabbles, we do not use the same name for posting our personal views as we do when moderating.

Most of us are normal people and do not undertake to work free all day and all night. We have various reasons for helping, which can include an interest in the forum or a sense of public service. Often there is an overnight backlog of Moderator Alerts when the first of us wakes up and has a look in the early morning.

Forum users might like to reflect that their forum membership fee of £0 a year does not cover the cost of 24-hour immediate response.

Ohh, was it all that Razzle person? That name had Come To My Attention before, and not in a good way.

Glad to see the back of her, even without the recent unspeakable behaviour.

As nobody bothered to report the problem thread in the Night Watch topic (as far as I can see), then it is completely unfair to attach any blame to the volunteers at all.
They don't appear to have access to any of the reporting or investigation tools used by MNHQ. Whether they should have is a different matter although I don't think it would be appropriate for volunteers to have that responsibility.
In the meantime, try using the Night Watch topic as well as using the report button.

Likewise if I'm wrong in my assumption.

They have no pay, therefore they have no responsibility to anyone.

Well then I will tell my boss that when I next go into work (volunteer)

Anyway, I think we need to agree to disagree. I have been a mod on a similar forum, I know what I would have done & what I expect (to a degree) here.

All I know is that a mother who loss her baby in tragic circumstances needed us last night. Now she has gone, refusing to post again, as a direct result of what happened (not just with the troll). I feel she was failed.

And we don't agree & that is fine.

You feel differently, and while I don't agree with it, I respect your opinion. I think we could be here all night (my time) & I really need to go to bed now Smile

different go and look at the Night Watch topic. The thread wasn't reported. How were the volunteers meant to know there was a problem?

They deleted a thread calling her a choice name. A name she was called BECAUSE of her behaviour.

Caitlins trolling was reported loads of times though. They wouldn't have had to search for it.

Oh,I didn't know that, what's the point then?!

Report
PhaedraIsMyName · 13/06/2014 16:08

I feel bad now that I didn't take up the name change with HQ. I suspect the point was to try to cause trouble for me rather than the member who ended up in the firing line. If so how unbelievably petty.

Liberal - you can report a thread to The Night Watch by starting a thread in the Night Watch topic here.
The Night Watch volunteers watch their topic and can act on threads reported there.
