Any chance of a topic about language and linguistics?

Hello lovely MNHQ
We often have lively debates about language change and usage and many of would dearly love a topic where we can mull over these things without posters who not interested in such topics accusing us of being irrelevant or snobbish. Any chance of looking into it?

AphraBane · 22/12/2013 11:51

Don't we already have a language and bilingualism topic? Couldn't that be marginally expanded to become language, linguistics and bilingualism? Or just language matters?

Amrapaali · 22/12/2013 11:53

Yessss! This is a really great idea. Pedant's Corner can be renamed. Pedant has become an insult. It always was, but on MN it takes on a whole new dimension.

LizzieVereker · 22/12/2013 11:53

Yes please, I would like to play, my Mum says it's OK as long as MardyBra keeps an eye on me.

TanteRose · 22/12/2013 12:35

"Don't we already have a language and bilingualism topic?"

Do we,Aphra?? I can't find it in the Topics.

Another vote for Mardy's proposal Smile

TanteRose · 22/12/2013 12:36

Brian genius Grin

MmeCinqAnneauxDor · 22/12/2013 12:39

Yes, please.

Think language and bilingualism is used more to discuss issues with kids learning the language rather than etymology/linguistic discussions.

Cunning Linguists is brilliant.

NellVarnish · 22/12/2013 12:43

Brian, Cunning Linguists is inspired!

Beastofburden · 22/12/2013 12:59

Oh Brian you are both filthy and creative.

I think I am in love.

PacificDingbat · 22/12/2013 13:06

I want to be a Cunning Linguist Xmas Grin!!
Please, please, pretty please

alexbaublistigers · 22/12/2013 13:12

Another vote for Cunning Linguists!

I agree with MmeCinq - the current Language/ Bilingualism topic is generally more for people wanting advice on how to bring up bilingual children. Previous attempts like mine at starting threads there on etymology/ linguistics have failed, because no one notices it.

BoreOfWhabylon · 22/12/2013 13:20

Yes yes - I would love to be a cunning linguist too!

Oh, though - would it attract the weirdies? Still, we could critically analyse their use of language Xmas Grin

MrsSchadenfreude · 22/12/2013 13:43

Yes to Cunning Linguists!

alcibiades · 22/12/2013 13:55

I agree with Amrapaali, that renaming "Pedant's Corner" would be a good idea (and presumably less problematic than setting up another topic).

"Cunning Linguists" is a brilliant idea!

PacificDingbat · 22/12/2013 19:11

Ok. Here it is: I learnt a new word today and need a Safe Place to use it without people pointing and laughing.
If there is no Cunning Linguist's safe haven people like me are discriminated against.

Oh, and the word is : PARAPROSDOKIAN Xmas Grin

"Where there's a will, I want to be in it."

Beastofburden · 22/12/2013 19:15

She was a good cook, as cooks go, and as cooks go, she went.

Example from saki.

You are not alone, pacific.

PacificDingbat · 22/12/2013 19:16

That's great Grin

My DH sadly lacks the linguist muscle - should I LTB??
