Could we have your help trying new MN function please?

Hello,

We've been building a feature to let Mumsnetters receive email alerts when a thread they are watching gets a new post and we'd really like you to try it out and let us know what you think.

You can turn it on by visiting your customise talk page.
You can also check which email address we have for you on your account page.

Right now the way it works is; if you're not actively browsing threads then you'll get an email to let you know when someone posts to a thread you're watching. You'll only get one email for each thread regardless of how many people post. It's just a way of letting you know there's been some activity. If you go and visit the thread again that'll be reset and you'll be able to receive another email alert.

This is a completely optional opt-in opt-out feature. You can change your mind at any time by going to customise talk.

It's our first little prototype so any bugs or quirks you find or suggestions you have please share.

Thank you!

On the app and clicked the link - now on the mobile site but I can't see what the Jeff you guys are on about!Grin

DorisShutt · 20/11/2013 06:20

Okay. Been using it for a day and it's okay. However I agree that a more customisable set of options would be better.

Some threads I watch because they have information I need, some for entertainment - and some because they're mine and I forget them! If we could set it up with a tick box so we could opt out of certain threads, that would be good.

KateSycoraxMumsnet · 21/11/2013 10:30

Shamelessly bumping so other people will try out Tech's shiny new toy Smile

ChippingInLovesAutumn · 21/11/2013 10:37

There's not really much point in me trying it as I don't MN on my phone and if I am on my laptop I check my MN threads a billion times more than my emails Grin

Am I right in thinking it's only on 'Threads I'm watching' not on all threads you have posted on? If so, afussyphase it wont happen in the way you think it will :)

IamtheTimeZombie · 21/11/2013 17:39

Zombie has just turned it on. She'll let you know how it goes.

JessicaMumsnet · 21/11/2013 17:47

It's only watched threads at present but we're interested in whether anyone thinks they'd use it for anything else - threads I started/am on etc.

If it were customisable, what other things would you like to see?

(Sorry we are working on releasing to mobile as soon as possible...)

I would like to try it and would like the function, but not enough to move away from my beloved Mumsnet Classic setting. Is it ever going to be available on all settings? Won't anyone think of the Luddites?

ILoveAFullFridge · 21/11/2013 18:19

Not interested.

That's what Threads I'm Watching is for.

I already get too many rubbishy gubbins 'notifications' that push real emails off my screen.

Jux · 21/11/2013 21:16

I've switched it on.

I'd like to know when the Opening Poster on TIO has posted. Sometimes, I'm just too lazy to look (or my iPad's playing up and crashing a lot).

ViewFromThe4thFloor · 26/11/2013 11:00

I see that it works for mobile if I turned it on using my computer. Thats so great! One question, will it send me messages whilst i am reading other threads? I think it would be better if it didn't because i just flip back to active when i am on the site and will see it anyway.

CatsCantFlyFast · 26/11/2013 11:07

I am going to try it, this is a feature I would be v keen on, however more for threads I'm on than watched threads. That may be because I am odd and don't watch threads, I just post on them instead. I will use today and feedback

DameDeepRedBetty · 26/11/2013 11:10

Okay I've turned it on.

Could I second the request for alerts when OP posts again on any thread I've contributed to?

Also what Revels said, it's still quite misleading. Come on Tech!

AmberLeaf · 26/11/2013 11:13

I'll try it, I think it would be good for threads I've started and maybe threads I'm on too.

DameDeepRedBetty · 26/11/2013 11:15

I must say btw I use Watch to stash threads which might be handy for the future. The current Watch list includes

Present suggestions for 15 y o girls

Vegetarian Christmas

What to get to help teenagers handle menarche

Some travel threads about places we're thinking of going next year.

etc etc

I rely heavily on Threads I'm On for keeping up with the sagas, hence my frequent use of Blank Post to placemark.

AmberLeaf · 26/11/2013 12:30

I tried it and it works. I think I will disable it for now though, I'd be interested in it more if it was enabled for TIO and threads I've started.

JessicaMumsnet · 26/11/2013 16:04

Thanks all, it's much appreciated. Thanks

Okay so Threads I'm on/started is definitely on the wishlist. Plus maybe customise by thread.

It'll work for mobile too but for now as we're just trying it out it needs to be turned on via the main site.

MirandaWest · 29/11/2013 08:01

Right I have turned it on via the main site. Am now getting a notification each time someone posts on a thread I'm watching which I didn't think was how it worked. Are other people finding that happening?

JessicaMumsnet · 29/11/2013 08:53

Hi Miranda
Sorry, we made some changes yesterday and think we might have broken it a tiny bit. We're fixing it now. Blush

I've just spotted this feature on the 'Threads I'm Watching' page. Great to see, as I've been wanting it for a while ... it's a basic feature of most other discussion threads. I'd also like it on 'Threads I'm On' and 'Threads I Started' please.

Ideally I'd want to be able to turn it on/off for individual threads rather than for lists of threads. Perhaps via a tick box at the top of the thread.

I just tried to add one of the 'Threads I Started' to my watch list so I could get notifications for it, but I got an error: "HTTP Status 405 - Method Not Allowed". Is that not possible? Pretty annoying.

JessicaMumsnet · 31/01/2014 23:22

Hi midweekGandT,
hmmm yes that error definitely sounds wrong. We'll take a look for you.
Can I just confirm this error appeared when you tried to watch a thread that you'd started?
How did you try to add the thread to your watch list? Was it from within the thread itself?
Thanks

midweekGandT · 01/02/2014 10:39

Hi MNHQ. I just clicked on 'Watch this thread' at the top of the thread that I started.

midweekGandT · 01/02/2014 14:54

MNHQ, I've experimented a little more, and I only get the error with threads I started in Mumsnet Local. Threads I started on the main site are ok.

Can you fix?
